About
Ta Dumbong Kro Aung Statue ( Black man Statue ) Founded in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire, Battambang is the leading rice-producing province of the country. For nearly 100 years it was a major commercial hub and provincial capital of Siamese province of Inner Cambodia (1795-1907), though it was always populated by Khmer, with some ethnic Vietnamese, Lao, Thai and Chinese. Battambang remains the hub of Cambodia’s northwest, connecting the region with Phnom Penh and Thailand.

Worth a quick stop if you're passing by. It's right in the middle of a roundabout but is fairly easy to cross over to. Day and night people are leaving gifts etc. at the foot of the statue as the traffic passes by.

The statue is of particualr importance to the residents of Battambang. There were a notable number offering tribute when I visited, in order to bring down blessings and fortune.

As a tourist, worth stopping by to see it if you are in the city.

Not something I'd go to see specifically but having passed it a number of occasions I did enquire about it and there are an interesting story and legend behind the man and the giant stick depicted in this monument that is worth knowing.

Exploring Battambang and the surrounding area by scooter had been a great adventure, and as I have read a little on its history, I encountered this statue at one of the roundabouts on the ring road around the city. There is a legend about a magic stick and some early ruler of this place surrounding this statue. He used to be a simple cow herder, who found a magic stick, and with its magic he took over the rule over the land, usurping the king. All the sons of the former king became monks and ran off, but one day one of them came back on a flying white horse. He overpowered Tu Dumbong, whose name became the name of the city Battambang, and took back the throne. However, the stick was lost.

Legendary tale of Ta Dumbong, a herder who usurped a king using a big mystical stick. But when he tried to kill a holy man, the stick vanished. The story is so important that the city was named after Ta Dumbong (which literally means “disappearing stick”). , ( bat = lost and also disappear, and dambong = stick ).
