- BrumbabSouthport, United Kingdom99 contributionsIncredible geography, deserving of its reputation as a "must see"Stunning landscape, amazing scenery, fascinating geology. Valle de la Luna is one of the most visited places in Atacama, in part because it's close to San Pedro. However, its popularity is not misplaced. This is an incredible landscape, and listening to the rock crystals popping in the otherwise silence of the desert morning is something unforgettable. There are various stopping points and walks of different lengths from which you can see various parts of the overall landscape. The rangers at the entrance provide a map and information. There are some procedures around booking tickets, timings for arrival etc that we never quite got to the bottom of. We booked in advance online which proved challenging, but in fact we found you could buy tickets at the ranger station on the day. Your ticket also entitles you to entry into a sunset viewing point above the valley. The sunset viewing point gets very full of tour groups but it's possible to keep away from the crowds, and ironically most of the tour groups left before the sunset got truly spectacular! The valley doesn't open until 9am, and some of the walks are quite long (up to 2 hours) so if you're planning on spending a whole day, take plenty of water and sunscreen, and be aware that it's also quite windy in places and generally a hostile environment so be well prepared.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- WallowsabroadIsle of Wight, United Kingdom75 contributionsAn experience not to be missed. This was probably the highlight of our trip to San Pedro. There are two walks and we chose the long, hour and a half walk. Take your time, take plenty of water, suntan lotion and a good hat. The walk is well marked and the scenery, the rock formations and the different strata are just wonderful. The walk is quite doable if you are reasonably fit and just enjoy rather than seeing it as a challenge. Go for it.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 December 2023
- Basel JAthens, Greece11 contributionsA place to appreciate with a talented tour guide! The place is very surreal! It really feels that you are hiking on Mars. The science behind why the place looks like this is AMAAZING. And the best way to know and understand the science is by having Rodulfo as a tour guide! Experienced, delicate, and talented human!Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 January 2024
- Jordan LNashville, Tennessee117 contributionsGreat afternoon trip from San Pedro!I booked a tour and they had me buy my valley of the moon ticket in advance. I think you must book a ticket 24 hours in advance so be sure to do so! The sites are great (though can get very hot in the heat) so be sure to bring lots of water, a hat and sunscreen.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 January 2024
- Ali921Edinburgh, United Kingdom1,508 contributionsTour of valley great, not so the sunset viewingYou can only book a pass on line, with passline. The tour of the Valley is very good. There is no shade so be prepared. Impressed with their being wardens ensuring the tourists stay on the paths ensuring that the natural environment is not spoilt. However, it concludes with a sunset viewing. Hundreds of people spoil the spiritual effect of watching a sunset.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 January 2024
- Megan Q2 contributionsValle de la luna tourAbsolutely stunning!! The views in Valle de la Luna were amazing! An initial walk through some sandy terrain but the path is well defined and the walk isn't too long. I went with Pukarumi Travel and our guide Guilia and driver Herrnando were awesome! Highly recommend this tour if you are in San PedroVisited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 January 2024
- Kevin SPontypridd, United Kingdom7,048 contributionsStunningFrom the best vantage point you will be taken to the scene really looks like something you've seen in pictures of the moon. Amazing rocky outcrops, enormous sand dunes, the geography of the area is very varied. Afternoon trips finish at a Sunset point reserved for tour vehicles unlike the roadside stops used by cars. A wonderful view, not necessarily the sun dropping itself but the light it sheds on the valley and surrounding volcanoes. Then as the sunset at 18.30, 15 minutes later in the opposite direction a full moon rose above distant volcanoes. Stunning, a full moon over moon Valley.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 June 2024
- Michalis VAthens, Greece415 contributionsAmazing place. Crowded as expected. Walking involved. This place is just amazing. As every top tourist attraction, there are A LOT of visitors, but please spare the complaints about it! It is expected and accepted. We went with Atacama Magic company and can’t complain about anything. Our tour guide chose some less crowded places, which was nice. Keep in mind that this tour (all tours, I presume) involve some walking, which is only possible on the (many) paths and NOT anywhere you might like.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 August 2024

Nice valley with out of this world rock formations which are definitely worth a visit, but don’t go out there for the sunset. Was a big disappointment as a ranger came to the main point ans shooed everybody down immediately after sunset, no chance to enjoy the colours developing. A bit of a shame considering that we had to pay just another hefty entry fee for the family...

We went on a tour with La Ayuna and met at the office. Checked in and were told to wait outside. We went off with a group going to The Valley Of the Moon. As we walked many blocks to get to the bus an employee runs up and says we are with the wrong group and acts as though we did not listen, However, he never told us who to go with he just said Wait outside. Then he tells us we must run or we will miss the bus. I am 63 and my spouse is 67 and there was no way we were going to run after our fast walk to the bus. We make it back to the office and the guy is seething.I tell another person on staff and after much huffing and puffing the man then calls a taxi to take us to meet the bus. It was only 10 minutes to the parking lot.
We joined our correct group and had a great hike with Sarah. She is a wonderful guide encouraging all to make it to the top and informing us about different interesting facts.
I recommend this hike but the sunset is iffy.

Rather than do a tour we rented bikes for 3000 pesos (for 6 hours) in town then biked out to the Valle and along the scenic road, stopping to do the hikes. It was hot but otherwise enjoyable and easy enough for just about anyone (really only 1 hill). The hikes take some time so bring lots of water, sunscreen, and watch the time because it will take the full 6 hours (you can also do a 12 hour rental for 12,000 pesos. We used hostal matty but there are lots of options).
Cool formations worth seeing!

Like Valle de la Marte it is a Natural Phenomenon. A stay until sunset is recommended for the colors, and a great atmosphere.
At sunset the winds are getting bad, and during the day the sun is burning your skin away. So stay protected at all time.

Must do attraction in SPA. Most companies offer the same routine of sunset tours, with a few photo stops, a walk along the rim of the dunes and then an hour wait for the sunset at coyote rock. This is a long ridge with enough room for all the tourists to spread out. You can get away from the crowds by going to he far end for spectacular views.

This is a raw and inhospitable place that manages to have a particular kind of beauty. It’s a geologist’s dream with the mix of various component rocks in just about every outcrop, and some bits (was it mica?) glistening in the sunshine. The combination of sand dunes and craggy rocks are powerful.

Impossible not to go. The fun of going to the Valley is doing the trekking to access the best viewpoints. It took us more than 3 hours and we missed a 30-minute trek to the salt mine, but I highly recommend doing the longer trek (1hr30min). Although the complete experience is watching the sunset in the valley, I recommend for those who go by car to do it in two stops. The first stop in the morning to avoid the oppressive heat of the desert and have a more pleasant experience when hiking and obviously longer. The sunset can be seen at the Kari viewpoint that is outside the valley sector going around the road, so you can go perfectly around 7:30 p.m. to wait for the sunset. The ticket purchased through puntoticket allows access to both the valley and the Kari viewpoint.

This is the tour most people begin with in Atacama and we did, too. It was a mid-late afternoon tour. We had to start early (2:00, due to a threat of late afternoon rain), so we were done by 6:00. It is an interesting tour that involves quite a bit of walking. It is close to San Pedro and is a good way to begin to get acclamated to the higher altitude. Our guide was very good, Emelina Sanchez, was very informative and spoke very good English. We were provided with snacks and drinks at our last stop which was a very pleasant surprise.

We were by car, it was literally about 20 minutes drive from San Pedro. Cards are accepted, admission costs ~$11 per person. The speed limit in the area is 20 km/h, although the roads are good, even a small car can drive everywhere without any problems.
It’s worth spending at least 6 hours on the valley! As for the locations: the most important are two routes, one to a huge dune (about 1 hour there and back), the second to observation points in the mountains overlooking the valley (about 1.5-2 hours). The remaining points (the weathered rocks at the end of the valley, the canyon at the beginning and the salt deposits in the middle) are not particularly impressive. But if you are by car, then why not visit... Some of the observation points (the coolest ones) are closed, apparently for security reasons. Although there are no restrictions in the same conditionally dangerous places in US national parks. I think this is correct, everyone makes their own decisions about where to climb and how to take risks...
The route to the dune is not difficult, although part of the time you have to walk on sand, which is quite tiring. The best option for visiting is to take the left path to climb the dune at the end, along a gentle route, rather than the steep climb at the beginning.
The second route, to the Achaches lookout, is more difficult. You have to climb for about a kilometer, but it's worth it! There are three viewing platforms, one after the other, each higher than the next. We saw people who reached the first one and went back. This is a big mistake, because the coolest views are at points 2 and 3!!
Be sure to take water and sunscreen with you, the sun is very harsh there!

Hello there!
Does any one know is this tour runs in August or September?
Written 2 March 2023
Hi Laura,
We were in San Pedro de Atacama in early October 2022 and we had a tour to Valle de Luna (as well as multiple other tours) at that time. I believe the tour would operate in August and September but it would be best to contact a tour agent to confirm. There are many operators located in the town all offering the various tours. Just google tour operators San Pedro de Atacama and select one. May be click on the map and look at the companies. Alternatively you could also wait until you arrive in San Pedro and make a choice then if you prefer. They all seemed good and are pretty much all located in the main strip.
Hope this helps.

Written 3 February 2020
Hi, we booked the whole trip and tours through an agent, but we did check all tours separately online as well. Just type in the name of the tour/area you want to visit and you should get something to come - Viatour usually covers most tours.
Or as they say above, loads of tour companies available in San Pedro - but find a company that does small buses, nothing worse than being with a large crowd of 20+ on a tour. Chile Roads are good and use small mini vans with max 8-10 and often less.
You don't reserve a slot - just be there and hope its a clear evening.
