Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Licancabur Volcano stands out from anywhere in the San Pedro De Atacama region and cannot be missed. It has a unique cone shape. Certainly worth for clicking pictures of same.

I was pretty excited to be booked onto a trip to climb Licancabur, and was reassured by the Atacama Mistica website that although a difficult climb, no previous climbing experience was necessary, despite the altitude.
I booked in advance via email, Atacama Mistica weren't very forthcoming with details, i.e. what documents, clothing, money (if any) were necessary, so had to email them to find these details out - only to get a brief 'someone will get in touch with you' type response email. On the day on the way to Licancabur, they then asked me if I had Bolivian money, climbing equipment and migration papers, none of which I had prepared for as I wasn't to know.
It was a two day trip, the first to stay on location overnight to get acclimatised to a higher altitude (around 4,300) and the day of the actual climb, starting at 3am.
We were just a small group of three, myself, the guide Serafin, and another participant. We got some way up before the second guest called it quits, so the guide and I continued to climb. Serafin didn't speak a word of English, and grew increasingly impatient, and seemed to expect me to keep up with his very experienced climbing pace. I literally lost count of how many times I heard "Vamos!".
As per my estimation, we were still within the allocated time for ascent, also leaving enough time for descent, so his impatience was unjustified.
Eventually, impatiently he trailed off and pretty much left me to my own devices, giving a much needed respite from "vamos vamos!". We reached around 5,560 before I couldn't go any further, due to dizziness and fatigue, so we turned back.
He later asked me what climbing experience I had via a translator, also muttering, "not good". His impatience was a surprise, especially as the climb advertised that no previous climbing experience was necessary. Myself and the other guy then had to wait an hour as our lift from location back to the hostel was an hour late.
All in all, the views from 5,560 were stunning and I got some great photos - but have to say that the experience was marred by Serafin's intolerance. I'm sure there's other tour ops that offer the same thing, I'd personally go with someone else.

I did it without agency, so it's possible. However I don't recommend it to people without experience in high altitude mountains. First day you have to arrive to entrance to the park. You can take transport from SPA. There you can say that you want to climb the volcano and the guards will find you a guide and the transport for tomorrow morning. You'll spend the night in the hut close to Laguna Blanca.
If you think you don't need the guide, you should make up some story and convince the guards that you'll just go to camp close to Laguna Verde or something similar. Climbing volcano is allowed only with the guide, so if you want to do it solo you'l have to break some rules. I don't recommend you to do this unless you are well adapted to high altitude and you are in very good shape.
In case you do it alone, you have to walk from the entrance to the base of volcano 11km. There you can camp. Don't camp at Inca ruins! You can camp a bit lower, there's a place protected from the wind at the end of the road.
I started ascent at 5:00 and was on the crater at 12:00. Bring all the water you need. For 2 and a half days I've brought 4 liters.
I've lost my path in the beginning but found it later. Use the Maps.me and choose the right path, not the left one.
The path is not well marked, and especially in the night it's hard to follow it. On the way back it's impossible to miss it.
The views are spectacular, from the beginning. Laguna Blanca in the morning is like a mirror and then with the wind gets its white color. You'll see flamingos there. Laguna verde is the most beautiful lake I've seen in my life, and I've seen a lot of lakes in South America. The sunrise was amazing, the view from the top too. Inside the crater there's frozen lake, one of the highest in the world.
The ascent is not technically difficult but it lasts for 7-8 hours. Half of that time you'll need for descent.
There's a lot of wind in the afternoon but it wasn't cold as you'd expect at almost 6000m.
Great experience!

Amazing spot located right on way from San Pedro de Atacama to Bolivia and Argentina. You can rent a bike and go all the way down from 5300m above sea level down to 3000m where is located SPdA. Amazing view and surroundings. Do not have words to describe this incredible place

I loved being able to see this iconic old gentleman volcano prominently on the skyline, from lots of places on the atacama. Being a person who loves to get his bearings, it's kind of comforting to see Licancabur when returning from day trips, so I'd know SPdA is nearby. On crossing the Bolivian border, you get a good look at him from two other sides. Beautiful landmark-make sure you look out for him lots

In spite of freezing cold, we found this area completely fascinating. Snow-capped and dominating the area, the volcano overlooks Laguna Verde, a beautiful azure lake but unfortunately contaminated with copper and arsenic, so devoid of life. We visited this volcano as part of a 3 day trip to the Salar de Uyuni...an experience you must have if you visit Bolivia or Chile.

I couldn't take my eyes off mighty Licancanbur, whether viewed from the Chilean or Bolivian side of the border. It stands at over 18000 feet tall and presides over the spectacular Laguna Verde in southern Bolivia. A remarkable place.

The Licancabur is the main view at the desert. You can see it from almost everywhere and is shared by Chile and Bolivia.

I just saw from a distance. Well from everywhere in San Pedro you can see Licancabur, but some agencies make the tour so you can go to the top, unfortunatelly I din´t have the opportnity to do that.

Beautiful scenery. We stopped at the volcano viewpoint for breakfast on the Rota dos Salares tour.
The tour itself is nothing special, but the view of this volcano was definitely the highlight of this tour.

Oi, pessoal.

Hi, my friend and I have a lot of experience with high altitude treks (I live in Chile). We are going to San Pedro de Atacama in a few weeks. We will have 4WD and prefer to do this trek on our own without a tour. Does anyone know if this is possible? Where the trailhead begins? And if there is a fee to enter the trail? I believe we would have to cross the Bolivian border. Thanks!!
