Certain worth the stop with its unique features from the other temples we have visited.

As we approached entrance to the first Temple, Puning Si, the smell of incense immediate engulfed your olfactory. The wind was blowing towards the entrance. As we entered the property it was similar to other temples we had seen except this one had a fire pit burning with incense and a stand where visitors could buy incense to burn. Many of the Chinese or Buddhist visitors purchased, bowed in multiple directions and then lit the incense. The Temple was grand, but the most amazing part and the thing to now miss was the statue of the Goddess Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, carved from wood that stood over 72 feet. There is just no words to describe it and in my opinion it is a must see and worth the stop if you are in Chengde. My teen girls loved it. The day we were there, during the National Holiday week in October, there were a ton of visitors to the property, both Western and local. Throughout the property not far from the incense burning areas were these large copper drums that everyone would walk down and turn. It was clearly a ritual of some sort. Although I am not up on my Buddhist transitions. It was honestly a very cool looking thing to watch. At the top of the property were a ton of locks, yep, pad locks. Strung all over the place. You could purchase one to hang for what ever fortune you wished bestowed on you: Peace, Love, Fortune, Health, Career, Good Luck, Inner Peace, or Affection. As with most ancient properties in China, to really see everything, be prepared to walk stairs. There are many. But it is so worth the hike!

The Puning Si Temple, or Temple of Universal Peace is a Buddhist temple located near the Chengde Mountain Restort and alongside the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, modeled after the Tibetan Potala Palace. The temple is part of the Unesco World Heritage sites in Chengde.

The Punning Temple is an active temple with annex monastery inside of the Tibetan Yellow Hat Buddhist school. There still are plenty of monks.

We arrived there on the day of the Chinese Moon Festival (12th of September), so many Chinese had an off-day. The temple was crowded with worshippers, many (mostly young) Chinese were praying and offering incense to the many Buddha statues in the different halls. We had plenty of time observing the prayers and the burning of incense

In the main hall of the temple complex you can see the large wooden Buddhist statue of Boddhisattva Avalokitesvara, said to be on of the biggest wooden statues in the world.

The temple resembles the Lama Temple of Beijing a lot. Main difference is that in Beijing the place is full of tourist. In Chengde you don’t see Western tourist at all. And the Chinese people in the temple are mainly worshippers.

The temple is peaceful and serene, the big wooden Budda is a magnificent sight! To see how it was hand carved from one single tree over 300 years ago.I suggest this sight to see this magnificent structure.

Tip : buy the combined ticket for 280yuans (Mountain resort, Potala and Punning Temple) if you're going to visit the main sights. You can add HammerRock the price would be 320yuans if I remember.

Really nice temple, dont miss the largest bouddha in a piece of wood (22m), very impressive.
Few monks around, and people praying.

Get ready to climb up the temple. It is high above the mountain. Even with the guide, they want your money...

Once you visit a bunch of temples in China it kinda feels the same. This temple - thanks to the huge wooden statue, feels more special...And from the outside it also looks quite interesting. The whole area is quite large. There is one shopping street with souvenirs with fixed price within the temple. Majority of the things is for quite a good price - so it's a pretty good location to buy souvenirs.

Puning Temple is unique in that it was and is dedicated to Lamaist or Tibetan Buddhism. If you cannot go to Tibet, then by visiting this temple you will at least have an idea of the atmosphere and practices of this form of Buddhism which is different from typical esoteric Chinese Buddhism. Unlike the other large temples in Chengde, this is an active temple which numerous worshippers and pilgrims arriving for special events throughout the year, and I enjoyed the people-watching aspect as much as anything. To see local Chinese actively and freely practicing their beliefs was encouraging. There are small rooms to the side of the main temple pathway that are worth visiting--if you have a good guidebook or tour guide to explain their significance. This temple is easily and shortly reached by #6 bus from downtown (costs just1Yuan) and does not have the excessive tourist trappings associated with other temples.

If you can, I also recommend staying at the adjoining temple hotel (look for the prayer flags) for a night or two. Not luxurious, but quite friendly staff and a well-decorated yet old traditional hotel. The Lamaist monks stay just down the hall and you will see and hear them all around--Not something you can easily experience in other parts of China!

I would say that this temple doesn't differ much from other common temples in China.
However, the giant Buddha who has won a title in the Book of Records is definitely worth seeing!

Classic temple still in use. Biggest standing buddha in world. Sadly no photographs inside actual temple as it's still used, but lots of impressive buiding and a lovely incense laden atmosphere.

Expensive government shop on site, however a little further down shopping street there are many small stall holders with more economical goods.
