Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I live in Chengde and have heard mention of the Kangxi Ceremony from time to time. I was hesitant to go see it because it's a bit expensive (about 200 RMB for the cheapest tickets, I believe) and in China I'm often disappointed by some sites and attractions. Sometimes they are poorly planned or cheesy or dirty. I never know what to expect and price is no indication of whether something will be good or not.
So when my friend managed to get some free tickets to the show, I decided to give it a try. It's far from the city center but you can take a bus there (bus 5, 1 RMB, get off at Yuanbaoshan 元宝山). You'll need to take a taxi back, which may need to be negotiated, maybe 30-40 RMB is a fair price to the city center if the drivers refuse to use their meters.
Anyways, about the performance, it is extremely well done--very artistic and using extremely high quality technology. It was beautifully choreographed with extreme attention to detail. There were parts of it that were also very surreal; I imagined that it is what one must feel like to be on hallucinogens! Unfortunately, I don't know much about Chinese history so I wasn't able to fully enjoy the significance of some of the scenes and themes in the performance, but it was still fantastic. The environment out by the theatre is nice as well. Be sure to take a jacket though, as it is held outdoors at night and gets pretty cool.
Overall, five stars. I would actually pay 200 RMB to see it again if I had visitors that were interested in going. I think it's worth the price.

As all the statements below, this show was amazing. It was a spectacle with the numerous actors and the immense backdrop of the mountains, which play a part in the show. If you are in Chengde, this will certainly be the highlight of your trip as it was mine.

On the outskirts of Chengde this is the most amazing outdoor performance that you will ever see. It's sound and light show telling a story of history of the Quing Dynasty. Words are in English on the side screen. Good views from anywhere. we picked mid price seats for 288 yuan. Take a coat or hire one once in the amphitheatre.
The natural hill surrounds is the backdrop to this amazing unfolding scene. Show begins with a horse ride past on a large scale. Maybe 50 horses and about 200+ actors take part during the evening. Scenes appear on moving stage sections, the back drop highlights houses, I think the show just over the hour. All I wanted to do was to buy another ticket as there was just too much to take in during one viewing.
Carpark was crazy afterwards so book your taxi for a return trip and nominate a pick up point. Souvenir stalls plus some food stalls before and after the show.
A must see. North of Beijing. a two day trip with car and driver but good roads. Go Beijing to Jin Shaling Great Wall site. Then Chendge several UNESCO temples, night show, more temples the ect day and then back to Beijing.

Hundreds of actors, tens of horses, the mountain as a part of the coulisse. Not only a local highlight, but one of the best shows I've ever seen. Created by Zhang Yimou's team.
