We tried to book a tour from Xian since it is only 1 and half hour speed train to Longmen Grottoes station but it was really expensive, some were about $500, including train and entrance tickets. I found Lisa's contact (woaibaby0918@163.com) in a few Trip...More

The grottos are beautiful, but book a private tour guide if you want a guided tour in English. The tourist area supplies audio guides and personal guides on site for rent, but both only in Chinese. You only need half a day there to see...More

The visitor center (northwest gate) is ridiculously far from the site. TAKE THE...More

Went to the grottoes on a day trip from Xi'an, very easy to do by train. It takes about 1h30 to get there. Beautiful sightseeing along the river, where you can admire the carving of buddhist statues done more than 1500 years ago. Follow the...More

Got to agree with Kuodo C. Don't think would get to enjoy the detail and workmanship if looking late in the day, and other than the larger carvings I didn't see any lighting. If your schedule could be re-arranged I would... More
