Accompanied by a Guide, for a few hours I was able to admire the work of these masters and learn their history. Of exclusive beauty is the huge amount of ancient and modern artifacts on display. I also had the good fortune to attend a concert held by a pond featuring instrumentalists of ancient stringed instruments and a varied assortment of porcelain that served as percussion musical instruments. Beautiful.

Jingdezhen, known as the “Porcelain Capital of the World,” is a city in Jiangxi province with a rich history of ceramic production dating back over 1,700 years. This fascinating destination offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and artistic craftsmanship, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the art of porcelain.

One of the main attractions is the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum, where visitors can learn about the history and techniques of porcelain making. The museum showcases a vast collection of ancient ceramics, providing insight into the evolution of this delicate art form.

The Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum is another highlight, offering a hands-on experience of traditional porcelain production. Visitors can watch artisans at work, try their hand at pottery, and explore the ancient kilns that have been in use for centuries.

A stroll through the city’s old town reveals charming streets lined with ceramic shops and studios, where you can find exquisite handmade pieces to take home as souvenirs. The annual Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair attracts artists and enthusiasts from around the world, making it a vibrant event not to be missed.

A visit to Jingdezhen offers a deep dive into the world of porcelain, blending history, culture, and art in a truly unique experience.

An essential destination for art lovers and cultural enthusiasts!

The grounds of this museum are outstanding, the scenery is beautiful and it is easy to spend half the day walking around exploring the history of ceramics in China. There are good signs in English which describe the different stages / steps in the production process which are very informative. There is also an area where you can see master craftsmen working at the various stages. One of my favorite parts was visiting the many different types of ancient kilns and see how they were reconstructed at this site.

The site is popular with Chinese tourist so going on a weekday is better and going when the weather is good is important because most of it is outside.

The entrance to the grounds are a good way off the main street - take the cab all the way in (15 minute walk otherwise) leaving is more difficult unless you get lucky and catch a cab you need to walk to the main road.

Jingdezhen WAS the place for Chinese ceramic. Some of the kilns were making ceramics only for the Royalty. Thus accorded the name: "IMPERIAL KILNS". The quality was superb, so were the designs. However, these are the bygone era. Present days the Jingdezhen kilns have to compete with many other kilns in other provinces of China; as there is no more backing from ROYALTY ! The ceramics are still good but not exceptional; catering mainly to the average tourists. Visit Jingdezhen as an experience but do not expect exceptional buy.

Amazing place - part museum, part workshop and part demonstration base. A huge site covering all aspects of porcelain making from ancient times to today. Includes beautiful gardens, elegant architecture and even a temple. Can see porcelain masters at work and they will let you have a go. Still using the same techniques from thousands of years ago. Ancient kilns including one that maed the Guiness world Record as the largest wood fired kiln in the world. Many beautiful ceramics on show as well

This is a must see destination if you are in the area. A lot of history as well as amazing scenery and some live music. There is live demonstrations of people making the China and handing painting it, which lets you see the level of detail that goes into each piece.

The setting is in a beautiful garden and perfumed with osmanthus flower which was in bloom when we were there. The highlight to me is to see the different types of kilns over the centuries. This place is so ancient and has been a pottery production place from as long ago as the Yuan dynasty (13 century AD), followed through to Ming and then Qing empires and until now. When we were there, one of the wood fired kilns had only been undergoing the cooling down process, which took days. It is exciting to be so closed to something so ancient and which is still being utilised to make pottery today. Chinese pottery is so old and it reached perfection so many centuries ago, that it really gives me the goose bumps to see the process perfected to create the exquisite china. Definitely worth a visit to this beautiful place and learn the history of porcelain, pottery, ceramics, china.
We came here on a hired car with driver.

This is a wonderful place to spend a day or half a day minimum. It is set up for visitors to wander around the extensive grounds and visit the old kilns. The stand out for me was being able to watch the many steps involved in making pots carried out by these skilled traditional craftspeople. There was also a show of musicians dressed in Tang Dynasty costumes playing porcelain instruments by a lake. There are several shops where you can buy work made in Jingdezhen, and a very pleasant cafe, also with smaller ceramics for sale. The museum is small with interesting displays on the history of Jingdezhen. Regrettably, the ceramics on display are nearly all (good) reproductions. Would recommend this as a major highlight of Jingdezhen.
