Four young girls were killed when a Ku Klux Klan bomb exploded in this church in 1963. The girls are remembered with a shrine in the crypt where they died, and a vibrant stained glass window donated in sympathy by the people of Wales adorns the historic church.

Anyone living in Birmingham or passing through should stop here. It is a solemn place, and if you don't know the history please do some research. As a Boomer the era is still etched in my mind even after all these years. I am a strong man but I wept openly here. America is drifting back to the attitudes of... More

We can't forget the sacrifices made in the fight for equal Civil Rights. What happened at this church is unforgiveable. These children didn't deserve their fate but it helped to galvanize people and move the fight forward. The memorial is very moving and the church is absolutely beautiful. Honor these martyrs with a visit. It's the right thing to do.

We got to the 16th Street Baptist Church in the afternoon and there were no tours scheduled for the interior so we were limited to the exterior of the building. My wife began talking to a fairly unkempt older black man who had all the appearances of a homeless person, but he proved to be a wealth of information about... More

In this political climate it is more important than ever to remember our past, lest we have to repeat it. This site is a landmark that puts substance to the stories of the Civil Rights movement.

I am not a religious person, and even if you're not, you should visit the 16th Street Baptist Church. This was a central location in the struggle for civil rights for minorities, especially in the South. It is the site of the deadly bombing that killed 4 young girls. You can feel the history. Everyone who works with the church... More

Even though it was a horrible time in our countries history, the history and experience of touring the church is a wonderful thing. It will make you think very seriously about the sacrifice those folks went through to secure basic American rights. The presentation was stirring and professionally done with any questions answered fully and promptly. The guide was excellent... More

This church is located directly across the street from the civil rights institute. We were not able to go inside because we did have a reservation, but we did marvel in the solemn history.
