Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Checked in to a hotel in the center of Five Points on a 'Sunday afternoon. We visited an Irish pub as well as a barbecue restaurant, both great places Do not miss this area as it is full of charm and a great place to 'bar hop' and to enjoy Old Birmingham. This is a fascinating and historic area of town near UAB.
I will go back. Can't wait.

I am a native, so I'm extremely familiar with Five Points. This is definitely "different" than most of Birmingham. It is the home of eclectic shops (including two old-school record stores, Charlemagne and Renaissance), excellent and diverse dining (including Highlands, the #1 Birmingham restaurant according to TripAdvisor), stunning architecture (especially the old churches), several fun bars, and a wide mix of all types of people, including homeless folks. You may see a "demonstration" at the fountain, a protest march, or maybe just people enjoying the area and feeding the pigeons. A "must see" while in town.

The area is charming with a lot of restaurants but after sundown, be careful walking alone. The neighborhood is overrun with homeless men who aggressively cat call and demand money. There is not a great police presence so walk with a group or go straight from car to wherever you're going.

When I was in college in the 80s, 5Points South was a cool place to hang out. There were plenty of restaurants and music clubs. I don't know if I've simply gotten older and more aware, or if truly the place has gone down hill. Now it looks like it would be a rough place at night. BUT there are still some top restaurants nearby: Botttega, Highlands, Hot & Hot, Mellow Mushroom. A new hotel is also being built in the neighborhood which I hope will attract good businesses.

I assume it is a happening place at night. A couple of blocks. Still up n coming. Not yet there. The pancake place looked promising and scads of hotels.

OMGosh! Love Five Points South. A record store hidden at the top of what feels like a secret stairway and you are a cool kid who knows about it! It’s a place frozen in (vinyl) time. It’s an original that Portland copied. A coffee shop (Filter Coffee Parlor) that could very well be in the Arts District in San Francisco. Speaking of, you gotta sit by that fountain with the animal statues sitting and listening to “The Storyteller.” The Original Pancake House serves copious cups of coffee, pancakes a zillion different ways (and they’re all good), bacon and eggs galore. A side street feels like France with Chez FonFon and Highlands (James Beard Award winning chefs). On another ‘in between point’ is The Black Market restaurant that feels like a schizophrenic British Pub with a fireplace inside and seating on the patio outside. A BBQ joint sits next to a Thai restaurant... and to top it all off, the Best Vegan restaurant in America anchors the end of the block! It’s store is ‘60’s hip with a real people vibe.

This area is one of the most over-rated places in the universe! Shabby, frayed, and dark. Nothing here to see, unless Jim n Nicks sucky service gets better.

This area was formerly a streetcar junction and early on became popular with residents. It retains a certain quaintness with some interesting architecture including a beautiful church and fountain. There's a few bars and restaurants that seem popular with the hipster crowd but on a Friday night wasn't really so busy. If staying close by do check it out but I wouldn't expect too much.

Our daughter attends UAB so we make many trips to Birmingham each year to visit. We always stay in hotels close to Five Point as it has so many different places to eat we never run out of different places to trip. Parking is metered but usually we are able to find a spot.

Unusual fountain and unique place to visit. Must eat at the Pancake House. Good place to have a nice walk or a break on a nice day.
