This and Jiaohe, as I noted in that review, are significant ancient city sites on the old Silk Road. Serving for several dynasties as the Uigher kingdom capital, Goachang was razed unfortunately by the Mongols in the 1400's and never brought back. A large portion of it was also subsequently bulldozed by Mao for use as agricultural land. It was... More

Its hard to feel authenticity, because they try to build everything here just from the beginning. And its a pity, that you cannot travel inside by your own bike, although distances are really big for walking.

This place was part of the attraction during my silk road trip. Its really amazing although mostly are ruins but I was really amazed by the structure and its history. I was fortunate that I was able to ride on the donkey cart which was replaced by the golf cart. It was said that Tang Shang Zhang or Xuang Zhang... More

The government are in the process of 'improving' these ruins, so I suggest you see them before they finish their task. At the moment, they are incredible ruins that you can wander through fairly freely and without any other people there for vast expanses. Soon, the road will be improved, trinkets will be sold and the tour buses will roll... More

I visited both Jiaohe and Gaochang and the former is certainly more popular with tourists. True Jiaohe is better preserved but there're still a lot to see in Gaochang. This is a vast area of mud ruins but you can still make out the boundary of the city and imagine once upon a time here stood a kingdom called Gaochang,... More

I visited Gaochang after visiting Jiaohe so comparing the two old ruins was inevitable for me. Gaochang is an interesting site but there's not much left to see apart from the external walls and a few buildings. We paid an extra 30RMB and we had a car taking us around - I recommend doing that as the site is huge... More

We have to had a strong imagination when visiting this old city ruins because there was not much left.it would be better if there was a museum or a guide to explain the ruins

We had hoped to take a donkey cart around the site, but they have been replaced by golf carts. However you get around, the ancient oasis site of Gaochang is well worth a trip to see. Gaochang was a trading outpost along the Silk Road until the 13th or 14th century. The city walls are rammed earth, and the ruins... More

This place is far from Turpan. And there is not much to see except for earth mounts which used to be houses and temples. Unless you have a vivid imagination or you are an archeologist, don't waste your time going there. Furthermore it's scorching hot in summer out there with few shady places, so take the horse cart if you... More
