The "Old Town" Lijiang seemed to be under construction when we were there the last couple days, putting in new pipes & plumbing, and with a few buildings & seemingly most of the public restroom facilities being upgraded. This, I can accept as being needed maintenance though it did take from some of the ambiance of the area. The town... More

Lijiang old town was amazing but we were able to see not only the biggest old town of Lijang, we were also able to go to visit the other old ones close to the principal one: Baisha village, Shuhe ancient town and Naxi village.

Touristy for sure as it is something anyone should visit when in Lijiang. There's lots to see in this old town - interesting buildings and structures of inns, cafes etc. Lots to sample, silverware, pastry shops, snack street, restaurants and bars but of course with the maintenance taking place continuously on some of the walkways and paths, it can be... Beautiful traditional chinese architectures. However it is super crowded and you can get lost easily within due to the size of the old town. Typical tourist traps where you see same type of stores duplicated in every corner. There's a bar street in the centre where all the actions lie. Take note there is a charge of 80rmb if you... More

It was quite nice with lots of restaurants and shops and bars but lots was under construction which kind of took away from the "Old Town" vibe. Worth going though for sure, some very cute streets.

Halfway between a real town and Disneyworld, it's OK as long as you are not expecting something authentically historical. It's a large, certainly picturesque, complex of single-story buildings in traditional style that are occupied by boutiques of the sort you can see anywhere in the world selling touristy stuff. Plus karaoke restaurants.

The old town is pretty with cobbled streets and streams. However it is the touristic reconstructed version of the old town that you are seeing. When I visited the streets were full of tourists from all over china enjoying the pop music, bongo drum performances, street snacks, souvenirs and clothing from all over china and elsewhere. It is nice to... More

Besides the old architecture, the ancient town has lost most of its charm. Naxi (the local tribe) ladies used to do their washing by the clear spring waters and one could sit by the streams and willow trees admiring the scenery. Today, the streams are polluted and the locals are no longer minding the shops. The shops have all turned... More

This place has definitely become more touristy over the years (especially compared to when I first visited). However, it's still great to check out for one day/night. I would not skip this place despite what others may say.

A must go-to place in Yunnan. It was a wonderful experience strolling along the stream with crystal clear water, crossing little bridges and peeping into some locals' courtyard. If you read chinese characters, do pay attention to the shop signages. Every name is an idiom created with clever wordplay yet aptly describing the business. Have a guess what business is... More
