About
The fort of Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of secular architecture in continental Croatia, with a unique monumental and authentic fortification structure. Situated at the top of Mount Hum Kosnicki, at 333 meters above sea level, it has dominated the Zagorje area for over half a millennium, during which time the architecture has blended in with nature. The impressive view from Veliki Tabor stretches over the entire Hrvatsko Zagorje area and part of Slovenia. This zero-category monument is one of the most recognizable identities of not only Hrvatsko Zagorje but of Croatia as a whole.

Beautiful place on the top of the mountain… the views are fantastic from the tower. You need a car or a lift to arrive to this place but is worth it. The place has many collectible ornaments… is ver well designed so you can enjoy the exhibitions by rooms. I adore the legend of Veronika

Very interesting castle with big museum inside (unfortunalely, it's open only till 3 PM in winter). Great view from the outside on the hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje. Taking photos is allowed everywhere. Don't miss a chance to get yourself a photo in guillotine! :-D
Tip - have a lunch in nearby restaurant Grešna Gorica. Domestic food with home made ingredients, good house wine. Big meals, reasonable prices. Genuine atmosphere. A little zoo outside. Children will enjoy it there!

Veliki Tabor is a fortified castle (Burg in German) on a hilltop in a beautiful picturesque landscape of Hrvatsko Zagorje in Croatia. It was built in the middle ages and has been continually rebuilt since then. In the early 20th century it started falling apart since it was abandoned following the communist rise in Croatia. It has only recently (in Autumn 2011) been renovated and opened for visitors. Only the middle building has been restored. It features texts in Croatian and English featuring the history of the castle, its renovation and life in the middle ages. There are a few nice medieval and younger pieces of furniture, cutlery etc. There is also a pretty nice collection of indigenous weaponry used by the owners of the castle through ages (the finest piece is a very nice flamberge). There are very nice sights and restaurants in the vicinity, which is another story. The fee is quite small.

We visit this while touring for a day on the north part of Croatia. This castle is very nice from outside and was very promising. The interior exhibition is good but text is not in english. The inside of the castle is extremely restaurated and does not keep the atmosphere you would expect from a castle.

Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved late medival and Renaissance fortified towns in Croatia. It was built by the noble family Ratkay during the 16th century. Castle keeps the sad story of Veronika Desinicka and Fridrik. The castle chapel on the first floor contains the skull of the legendary Veronika of Desinić. The ticket price is 20 HRK.

This is one of the first renewed (still in progress) castle in Croatia, there is few of them at the coast but in continental part of country there are very small number of un-destroyed castles.
The castle is still not finished but it is very nice to see, and from approaching road, when is fogy looks relay magical.

If you are expecting a fully furnished castle, don't stop. If you appreciate architecture and history, then stop and enjoy. The reconstruction looks good and there is more excavation work being done.

Recently reopened, Veliki Tabor has been restored to most of its former glory. There is still some work ongoing, but none that should keep you away from it. The fortress is a beautiful sight, on top of one of Zagorje's rolling hills, and of such an unusual shape and structure, that one should view it from all sides. Once there, you can see the cellars and two archaeological exhibitions, but it is the fort itself that will steal your heart. And - it comes with the kind of heartbreaking love story any self-respecting medieval fort should have.
Also, make sure to visit the mini gift shop, where you can buy traditional wooden toys and a very witty poster of Veliki Tabor (be gracious and ignore the misspelling on it).
The fee is minimal, 3 euro adult / 1,5 euro concession. Worth every penny and more.

When I first saw the pictures of Veliki Tabor castle, I loved its massive towers and architectural plan in general, and was keen to see it.
On our research stage, TA forum regulars confirmed it was still under the reconstruction. But we decided to drive to Desinić to at least see the castle from the outside. And do it now, before they spoil it with bright white paint, like the Stari Grad in Varaždin that gave us strong feeling of a doll house or film decoration rather than historic fortress.
Sadly, we failed to drive all the way up to the hill where Veliki Tabor castle is situated. Excavators and tractors, engaged in some roadworks, blocked the road.
But even from the distance it looks powerful. Unfortunately, construction scaffoldings have almost entirely covered the castle, hiding the brickwork still visible on one of the towers (no, we saw no signs of the girl bricked up into its walls).
We never regretted going to see Veliki Tabor now. I fear when the reconstruction is over, its trimmed and painted looks might appear soulless, loosing much of the authentic medieval spirit, and turning it into yet another plain touristy entertainment. Presently, our imagination worked just perfect to let us see through the centuries.
P.S. We passed by Grešna Gorica tourist eatery, recommended in Desinić by almost every guidebook that we had, but it looked deserted. Not sure if still open.

I've visited it with my husband and our baby. definitely use a baby carrier and leave the stroller in the courtyard if you want to explore all the levels. The castle looks new because it's been recently restored to its former glory. In my opinion it's one of the most beautiful castles in Croatia. There are plenty of exhibits in the castle, weapons, torture instruments, furniture, horse carriages in the courtyard, different objects. There's also a room dedicated to the legend of Veronika Desinić who still hunts the castle (supposedly).
