We weren't going to book the gorilla tracking because originally we just wanted to climb the volcano - but it turned out to be one of the most incredible experiences of my life (and now I'm addicted to gorilla tracking! Thanks Virunga!). I haven't tracked...More

We had a pretty fleeting trip to Virunga, doing the Nyiragongo trek on the first two days and the gorilla trek on the third. But it was hands down worth every penny and every minute of travelling to get there! Climbing the volcano was, as...More

An absolutely amazing experience only enhanced by the professionalism of our guides. We visited the Bageni Family which included three Silverback Gorillas. This was the toughest family to see as it was well over 2000 meters in the mountains through some pretty thick jungle but...More

This is an absolutely fantastic park. The gorillas and seeing lava in person were two bucket list items for me. The gorilla trek was wonderful, we were right up close to the gorilla family. Mikeno Lodge is beautiful. Bukima is a bit more rustic, but...More

Two most unforgettable experiences in my life: 1. Awesome silverback mountain gorillas one step far from you. Beautiful creatures. 2. Stunning lava show on top of Nyiragongo volcano. Virunga is <3!!! Don't save on transportation, you definitely need park convoy to get to gorillas or...More

Difficult to get to, but worth it. Don't worry about security and safety, we felt completely comfortable throughout the whole trip. Gorillas, an incredible experience - trekking to see them, with the most dedicated and brave rangers. An intimate experience, there were a total of...More

Virunaga NP offers lots of activities. Top program is visiting the gorilla’s in Bukimo, climbing the Nyiragongo Vulcano and safari in Lulimbi! To reach the Nyiragongo Vulcan you have to make a very difficult hike, but it is worth the effort. I would recommend to...More

The park is stunning and I've had two of the most incredible experiences in my life: seeing (and hearing) lava rumbling a few hundred meters below me and being incredibly close to the critically endangered mountains gorillas. I cannot recommend it enough! I organized everything...More

It is a life changing experience. Mountain gorillas are bi and heavy but intelligent and good natured. Fascinating to observe them for an hour. The silverbacks are very powerful and the mother plus the babies are lovely. The juveniles are very playful.

Hello. I'm a single backpacker from the United States. I will be headed to Virunga National Park on September 14, 2017. I do have one final detail to work out - the night of Sunday, September 17, 2017. On September 16, 2017, I am staying in a tent on top of the volcano. I am debating on whether to had to Tchegera Island on 09/17/17 or spend an additional evening at the Mikeno Lodge on 09/17/17 (I am already spending the night at the lodge on Friday, September 15, 2017). What is there to do at each site? I know I might be tired - so it might be nice to be in the comfort of the lodge; however, I ant to be sure to maximize my Virunga experience and see as much as possible. Would it be potentially worth to book an excursion into Goma and see that city? Please let me know your thoughts. Finally - any advice on what type of clothes / supplies to bring? I want to be sure I'm prepared for the conditions and comfortable on the treks. Thank you so much for any help!

We stayed the night before in Gisengy in the Rwanda discovery hostel. You can cross the border early and you have enough time to join the climb to the volcano. We did: Gisengy, volcano, bukima and Mikeno. I don't regret it... More
