So true when I watched great artists performing at Punarjani Traditional Village - both shows - Kathakali Fusion and Kalarippayattu(Traditional martial art). Mesmerizing experience and also a great job on crowd involvement. Leaving the place, I felt like a proud Indian!!Thanks for your feedbackWritten 7 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 November 2023
- PAllavurSSeattle, Washington72 contributionsGreat experience on local cultureWe were doing a Kerala tour and wanted our teenage son to get exposure to local culture. The driver we had recommended tickets to the KATHAKALI performance and the Kalaripayattu martial arts performance at Punarjani. Both performances were packed and the performances on both were very good and entertaining. I only give 4 stars and not 5 because they kept stuffing people into the KATHAKALI performance to the point that it raised safety concerns, there was too much “rock” in the performance - some was innovative but it was overdone. Overall had a great experience. The martial arts demo was excellent!ThanksWritten 7 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2024

- John DPalo Alto, California33 contributionsFusion of traditional dance forms with modern musicThere are two performances; one is kathakali, a traditional dance form, the other is kalaripayattu, traditional martial arts. We saw the kathakali performance. The costumes and makeup are mostly traditional. But the music is modern, and the finale, which is heavy metal kathakali while the performers are flashing mudras, is worth the price of admission, in fact we would come back to this area just to see this show again. If you like unusual fusion of art forms, you won't want to miss this.ThanksWritten 7 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- Chrissie77United Kingdom684 contributionsUnique and SpellbindingI actually had no intention of going to any dance performance. But our driver had other ideas by buying the tickets and driving us there! We really had no idea of what to expect and were prepared to be bored. How wrong can you be? From the start of the music we were hooked! The skill and expressions of all actors was breathtaking. We didn’t understand of course but somehow “got it”? One of the team made eye contact during her very emotional piece and the tears just flowed. That shocked me. There were so many emotions conveyed to the spellbound audience and silence throughout. At the end most of the audience was on stage having photos with their favourite and I wish I had done so too but that British reserve just stopped me. My husband videotaped most of it so we will be watching again. Thank you to all the amazing actors for such an unexpected experience. We also watched the martial arts which was very skilful but not really for us!ThanksWritten 7 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- Robin3 contributionsBreathtaking artistic fight performancesWe went to watch the artistic fighting show „Kallarippayattu“. The show and the artists was breathtaking. The stunts were very well performed and the professionalism was visible. The only nitpick is that I did not very well understand what the „introducer“ was saying over the microphone. However the show was very exciting and recommendableVisited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 May 2024
- Curious029875680891 contributionAmazing display of traditional martial art form karalipayattu. The kalaripayattu martial arts performance was amazing. As a native to Kerala, I thought I wouldn't enjoy it. But, I definitely did. Especially the fire and sparks show towards the end. It's worth watching atleast once. The only downside is that the ticket counter person was not very helpful.ThanksWritten 7 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 May 2024

My family and I watched the Kathakali Dance Fusion at Punarjani. The performance, a captivating and well-curated fusion of Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Kathakali, was 60 mins long. The performance includes solo dances, duos, as well as ensemble dances. Each performer is a master of their craft and can truly command attention even alone on a stage. Through their expressions, they tell stories that we've read or heard about while growing up. Pro tip #1: if you go about an hour before the performance is to begin, you can watch the Kathakali performers paint their faces and don their costumes. The effort this entails will enrich the experience for you further and help you see what goes on behind a performance. Pro tip #2: There is not a significant price-difference between the seats at the front and those further behind. Get the seats towards the front; it will make you feel like the dancers are interacting with you. Pro tip #3: The dancers stay back after the curtain call and take pictures with the audience. Try to get on the stage earlier before it gets too crowded (suggestion, leave the performers appreciation in the form of money in the tip box if you enjoyed the show as we did). Must do in Munnar!

We saw an evening at the Punarjani watching the Kathakali and the Kalaripayattu shows. It was a spectacular experience. We watched the Kathakali show for an hour. This is a wonderful show of the ancient Kathakali blended in short bites along with other forms of dancing such as Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam, and Kuchupuddi. The fusion of all the dances at the end of the show was mind-blowing. The whole show was entertaining.
After that, we saw the Kalaripayattu show. A fabulous display of ancient weapons with the dynamic use of skill, strength, and courage required on a battlefield. The show was conducted in an organized manner, with the participants performing brilliantly, with so much energy, keeping us on the edge of our seats for the whole hour.
I recommend each and every visitor in Munnar to spend an hour of an evening watching the Kalaripayattu show, They explain each performance and we watched with bated breath. At the end of the show, we could hold the weapons and meet the artists. It was wonderful meeting them and talking with the master too. Memorable experience. I watched the show in the first week of Dec 2022.

We had a fun time. We first watched the dancers put on make up and their costumes- only four members of the audience elected to do this and in my opinion they missed out. The dance show was about an hour long and included a variety of short dances. The martial arts show was in a purpose built arena on a lower floor and was a varied mix of sword fighting and other martial arts. The shows were also excellent value- best seats for each show were around £6.

After a long day around Munnar, I wanted to head back to the hotel. One of them members of our group wanted to attend the Punarjani dance demonstration of Kathakali. We decided to to all attend, and also see the Kalarippayattu, both were excellent!
The Kathakali was not in English, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the performance. The facial expressions were terrific!
The Kalarippayattu was a real exciting demonstration of martial arts. Unni Gurukal and the team were amazing and enjoyed working with the crowd.
Thanks for an amazing second last night in Incredible India!

Starting with what i loved the most which cannot be described in words is Kalaripattu ...genuinely a must visit ..their performance is breathtaking... I will give them 5 rating for their dangerous acts.
Next coming to kathakali, this was my second time watching kathakali and this was a let down. The actors did not know to express via facial expression.
Being trained bharatnatyam dancer, I can tell that in Karnataka the kind of dance the little girl did was taught to us within 6 months. She needs lots and lots of polishing. I'm sure shez some important persons daughter amongst the event organiser and hence must have given her a Chance so that she gains confidence.
The only thing i could watch in that expensive show is mohiniyattam...she was graceful and beautiful to watch.
Plz do not show such low standards as our cultural form of dance and spoil the art.
2 out of 5 for the kathakali show( entire marks only deserved by mohiniyattam dancer )

This is one of the most memorable show of my life time, if you visit Munnar.
This should be on top your list, the ticket price 500 rs is nothing for this kind of experience.
The artist from Kathakali team are very skilled at what they do & in fact i would suggest to go 30 mins earlier so that you can see them while preparing backstage, i have never experienced any cultural performances like these but i enjoyed it immensely.
Next Martial Arts :
What do i say about this performance, i just experienced something which I probably wouldn’t experience again, all the team members are extremely skilled & the performance they delivered, i couldn’t even believe it’s possible.
Post the show, you will also get a chance to meet them & talk to them.
Extremely humble people.
MUST VISIT SHOW, when in Kerala.
