It is monumental and so is worth the walk or the ride. It is big, unbelievable gold and framed by an equally unbelievable blue sky.

Read the guide books and stroll round yourself.

Pay in Kip and the ticket collector gives the poorest dollar to Kip exchange rate in the city!

Stop by Wat Phra That Lampang Luang for paying respect Buddha. It was very peaceful. Don’t forget to see the reflection of pagoda at house behind the main building.

Wat Phra That in Lamphang is truly a "must see", ranking in my top ten of Buddhist temples world-wide. While "ranking" temples is inherently absurd, I suppose, nonetheless, some grab your heart and mind - Wat Phra That is one of those! Plan a multi-hour visit, and just bask in the flow of curiosity, and calm, and color, and architecture, and grand setting that is Phra That!

It is a tribute to the sheer magnetic power of this Wat, that even on our first visit here at last year's Loy Khrathong festival, the choking crowds, sword fighting and joyful noise from the street could not supplant the overwhelming awe one feels in this amazing place. Viewed from across the broad street in front, the place takes on the look of a vast citadel, elevated on its own hill and surrounded by buildings joined to form massive walls. The stairs up to the narrow, wooden-gated main entrance are only the beginning.

There is something about the Lanna twist on Thai architecture that makes it more delicate, more vertical, and more sweeping, even on a large scale, and the entire site here is every bit Lanna. The seated-Buddha-within-Stupa inside the Wiharn has so much detail on the stupa that one could stare at it for an hour peacefully, and yet the details stand out, not as mere pattern or background, but as important elements, and the whole thing somehow does not distract from the Buddha inside. That alone is worth the climb. The site's layout is thematic, the flow is natural, everything is proportional, and nothing is out of place.

The painting is textural, meditative and just outstanding. Old wooden pieces such as candle sconces that might now be in disuse, are restored and placed about as decoration, so that any restorations done to the buildings are never out of place with the history of the place. There are quiet places here, even at Loy Khrathong, and certainly in October! There are beautifully painted columns you want to touch, carvings that make you stare, and whether the place is stuffed full of people or nearly empty (all hail October!) a reverence prevails that cannot be broken.

This is a breathtaking place not to be missed!

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is a respectful place in Lampang province, northen of Thailand.
The place is located in highway route no.1 and not far from heart of city.
There are long time history and a legend that about 2500 years ago, the buddha visited this area and give his hair. So the place keeps a kind of "phra that", Buddha's hair, in a large chedi.
The top of the chedi was made from gold in shape of nine umbrellas that the smallest umbrella is first one on the top.
There are also other lanna style anceint buildings in the place.
If you like anceint art, you should not miss.

Seeing the upside down reflection Phra That Lampang Luang is miracles. Only men can step up the building at the back of the Phra That. Women can see this miracle in the Wihar. In this coming Makhabucha Day, the ceremonial blankets relics will be held.

How To Get There? The temple is located in Ko Kah district, around 15 kilometers South West of Lampang town. The quickest and most comfortable way to get there is by private taxi. I took the songthaew yellow one to the Lampang Morning Market with 20 Baht. Then there is an another blue songthaew to the temple directly with 80 Baht. Of course, there are around 5 people we are sharing the car. You can ask the driver to wait for you for your way back home with reasonable price.

How long ? It took around 30 minutes from the Lampang town.

Why ?
Inside :To enter the temple, you must pass a pair of guardian lions and climb the naga stairway up to the massive main gate. The main prayer hall, the Wiharn Luang, stands close inside the main entrance. The massive wall is really big and made with old bricks. Inside the courtyard is filled with sand and you will feel as an real temple. I haven't experience any temple like this before in Thailand. The architecture is mixed with Burmese influences as the city was occupied by Burmese late 13th century. The main prayer hall is directly connected with the entrance and inside the chidi, we can pray the buddha image. Behind the prayer hall, there is 45 meters tall amazin chidi with bronze and copper. The whole compound is really peaceful.

How long ? For praying and execution the temple ... 1 Hours is enough. For me, I spend around 45 minutes inside and 20 minutes outside the temple just to enjoy the local market and beautiful horse carriages.

great temple complex where you can also feel the devotion of the Buddhist people.
Try to observe the very peculiar optical effect like "camera oscura" it is impressive.

This temple is well worth a visit!
Easy to find (by car) from Highway 1 (ko Kha exit) situated about 13 kms south of Lampang City in a small village.
Impressive entrance staircase leading up to one of the oldest 'viharn' in the north. See the temple reflection on a kind of curtain in the small chapel at the back of the compound.
Also nice souvenir stalls outside the temple - for typical Lampang lampshades and elephant hangings.

Whenever in the area I always stop here, just to sit and relax and hoping that modernization will not destroy the beauty of this Lanna style temple with its beautiful wood paintings.

Okay, I get it--there are a lot of Wats in Thailand and Lampang. The reason to go here is for the two color shots of the Wats reflected inside other buildings; these occur real time and you can see people walking by, taking pictures, and lollygagging. Undeniably cool but tough to take great pictures if you're not at least a camera novice. At first I thought that the images were through colored lenses [and mirrors] or otherwise altered but I searched far and wide through each building's apeture and the reflections are natural (see pics). Roam the ground take lots of pics but beware to the females in the group: the second [darker] image I posted, which is in the building behind us in the pic, is only open to guys/men. I don't know why nor did Pooh; the signs in front of the bldg actually say "it's free to get in so don't pay anybody who is trying to charge you".

It's a free entry from the gitgo and outside you can easily jump on one of the waiting carriages for a horse-drawn buggy ride (which we did not). Went with Mom and Dad and Pooh's family--initial steps a little work for older troops. Not sure about the translation above, but according to Pooh who is from Lampang the name translates to "Buddha/Monk Bone Lampang Big". Regardless, take a few hours and visit the joint: it's unique and worthwhile as there's not a WHOLE lot to do in Lampang. Sorry about pics...they may come out sideways---still leaning about iPhoto and posting [upright there, look like sideways here].
