Beautiful experience in the jungle
May 2021 • Solo
I spent there 2 weeks and it was a fantastic time. Up to 7h Kung Fu, Chi Kung and stretching every day really bring your body into shape. The place is surrounded by beautiful nature, awesome flowers and homegrown tropical fruits. Their food is mostly homegrown and very wholesome and nourishing. Their goal is to feed the body and reduce inflammation. I know only few places that awesome.

Body and Mind
Nov 2019
For most of my life I have been physically active, always challenging myself. Power lifting, boxing or climbing the highest peaks of Colorado. In my sixties I would travel from the mountains of Colorado to the beautiful mountains of Pai, Thailand. Home of Nam Yang Retreat.
I committed to study at Nam yang for six months. Due to the COVID-19 I trained four months longer. Ten months in total. Nam Yang students come from all over the globe. One aspect of the retreat I really loved.!! It truly cultivated a sense of Family and Community. An amazing diversity of people with one common goal.
The training is very intense and vigorous. After the first two weeks I began feeling focused and stronger. I was ready to move on! The instructors are the most talented and patient people that I ever had the pleasure of knowing and learning from. They would go over every detail taking their time for me to learn. Master Iain was one of the most fascinating people people I have ever met. He brought an amazing calmness and eagerness to learn for me and the entire retreat.
. I was a beginner when I first arrived, and ten months latter I graduated to the intermediate level. I had an amazing journey learning several weapons and freehand routines. I have learned to work on my meditation with several techniques to apply. It was most certainly a full Body, Mind and Spirit experience!!!
I plan on returning to the retreat to continue my training, Maybe I'll see you there!!!

this was a time 2018 april to may. Ok so first off master Ian is a amazing teacher. he knows so much, all respect to u! Freya was so professional to. Thomas so good! ok so now to Dave... he should NOT skip the meditation every morning because he really needs it. pissed off old man, i feelt like i had to buy my respect there a little bit because i wasnt hanging out and needed my own space (even tho that wasnt clear enough since i got a private room) so i got "accepted" basicly when i was starting to buy books, clothes ect. which is weird but i guess they want you hanging out with them, and i accept that. so why they have private rooms? i dunno. ok Food! so good, amazing!! classes are really good and teachers really helped alot to develope the skills. i was in the meditation program and i learned alot under my 28 days.

One of the best
Jan 2020
Spending a month at Nam Yang was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I came because I wanted to explore meditation further after recently trying it, but knew I wouldn't enjoy a meditation retreat. The physical aspects of Nam Yang made it ideal, as you're able to learn about what both your body and mind are capable of. It'll be more than you think.

I thought going would be 'good' for me, but had no idea if I'd actually enjoy it. It turns out that learning Kung Fu at Nam Yang is really really fun. It's tough at times, but how hard you push yourself is your decision. Basically everyone seemed to have achieved something that was important to them, whether that was touching their toes or learning a sword routine with 30+ moves.

The schedule has the perfect balance of breaks and training. 35 hours a week sounded like a lot before arriving, but with two rest days and two days when there's no classes after breakfast for over five hours, a lot of us trained during the breaks (/recommended free training periods) and days off.

The whole place has an incredible atmosphere. It's set back enough to feel isolated and surrounded by nature, and you can mostly see rolling hills and hear wildlife. The people are what make it so special though.

The instructors are truly fantastic, their skill, dedication and patience is incredible. They really embody how Kung Fu is a life long learning process, as they know so much but have so much to learn compared to their seniors. They're also good people, and a lot of fun to be around.

The other students made my experience what it was. Nam Yang attracts a lot of people who you'll be better for having met. There's a constant flow of people in and out, so there's often new and interesting people to talk to. You won't click with absolutely everyone, but the atmosphere and ethos means that interactions are always friendly.

The food is good, and healthy. If you're not a vegetarian, you'll get meat in one meal each week. It's very different from typical western diets, but even if you normally eat very differently, nourishing your body with healthy food feels like part of the whole experience. You should know that lunch isn't included, and while Pai has an insane amount of incredible food, it's a 5 minute moped trip and a 40+ min walk away. Most people don't find they need the big lunch they'd normally have. Training after a big meal isn't comfortable, and after the big breakfast, a smoothie or small snacks at midday are often enough.

Waking up at 6am was not easy for the first week, and I'd collapse into a nap straight after breakfast most days. But you soon adjust, and learning Chi Kung while the sky gradually grows lighter above hills on the horizon, before the sun eventually burst forth, is magical.

I'd really recommend staying at least a few weeks to a month. It takes time for your mind and body to adjust, and to really feel the benefits of what you're doing. The people who stayed for 2-3+ months seemed to have learnt a huge amount. However, students who came for a week or even a day always seemed happy they'd done it. The workaway scheme also seems good, there's a lot of gardening involved but it seems fair for what you get in return.

The Shaolin Warrior schedule was perfect for me, with a brilliant balance of stretching, meditation, moving meditation, high intensity warm ups, Kung Fu techniques, 'sparring'*, and discussions/lessons on the ethos and history of Kung Fu. There's two other options available that include more meditation and less physical activity, so something for everyone. While I was there the students included both a family with two young children and a man in his 80s. The experience is what you make it, and Pai presents many opportunities for fun outside of Kung Fu if you're interested.

*You don't spar as with boxing, partly because it would be too dangerous. The 'sticking hands' and 'pushing hands' fighting practice sessions are perfect though. Even that can get quite intense, but everyone respects each other's comfort levels. You may be tapping one partner, then going at each other while still pulling your punches with the next. You should be in control the whole time though. Learning to calm my mind in that situation was one of the most powerful things I took away from the trip. That and the 'Shuang Yuang', an interesting and powerful moving meditation that takes a lifetime to master.

I came away with exactly what I'd wanted, and so much more. If you're considering going to Nam Yang, just do it. You won't regret it.

Thank you !

This place is amazing. Master Ian and his instructors are the real deal; insightful, knowledgeable and powerful. I learned so much in my time here, and that is thanks to the skills of master Ian and his instructors.

It was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life and I will come back - I can imagine no other place to continue my kung fu and qi gong journey.

The retreat is an awesome place with good energy and room for both meditation and warrior training. the place is beautiful while also having very good training facilities and areas.

I loved it!

Beatiful, challenging and unforgetable experience
Feb 2020 • Solo
I arrived at the retreat looking for my first experience in martial arts and meditation/internal development without being very sure about what to expect about and how many days to stay and i finally spent 4 weeks, 4 very magical weeks.
The experience is as amazing as challenging, and i would say that intense training (waking up daily at 6 and traning for many hours untill 6 pm) it's not the hardest part but the internal challenge... Something that i also found so beatiful about Kung Fu, a martial art which is really focused in the internal balance.
I would recommend everyone who has the chance to live this experience.
Specificly talking about Nam Yang, what to say... The place, the location, the background, everything looks like a dream... Will never forget these sunrises sessions... All the instructors are the best, so profesionals, exigents and friendly. Honestly, it's really hard to find something to complain about, an oportunnity to make it any better. Master Iain, congrats for the living dream you have achieved. I wish you and your team all the best. Will never forget you.

7 weeks wonderful and life changing experience
Jan 2020
Simply said – it has been the best time and experience I could have wished for! I haven’t felt that happy and relaxed for a long time in my life.

Master Iain thank you very much for creating such a wonderful place where students get the chance to experience the spirit of Kung Fu and for taking the time to teach and to share your wisdom, knowledge and skills.

I arrived as a complete beginner at Nam Yang and left with diverse set of weapons & free hand routines, basic fighting skills and Chi Kung routines. The training schedule is a perfect combination of meditation, stretching and in depth Kung Fu Training. Eventhough the training days can be physically callenging, you will gain more and more energy with every day.

You will be receiving explicit and detailed feedback thoughout every training day. This way it is possible to gain a lot of relaxation, flexibility, strength and knowledge in a short period of time. All instructors are warm-hearted, open minded, helpful and great fun. Their biggest goal is to see all students succeeding. All of the Instructors are truely amazing but a special thanks goes to Dave, Kanika and Ophir – they have been a true inspiration and great motivation for me. I am very thankful for their constructive feedback, encouragement, patience and consistant help!

Master Iain, Dave, Craig, Kanika, Thomas, Ophir, Veronica, Camille, Shawn and Leo – THANK YOU for making this trip a life changing one for me! Hopefully see you next year again, Catrin.

Dear Catrin, Sincere thanks for your review. I am really glad that we were able to give you such a positive experience. We are passionate about our arts and about sharing them with our students and we realise that to do so properly we need to create just the right atmosphere. We have been refining our program for about 12 years now and it seems that we are getting it about right. I will definitely pass on your feedback to the rest of the team. We too hope that you will be back next year Catrin, Iain.

Staff friendly with fresh grown food
Jan 2020 • Family
The staff were very knowledgable about the taught practices. The food is grown on site so there is little daily variety. A longer stay would make the learning easier too. Instructor Kanika is amazing in practice and demeanour. Worth the long visit or really short dip into Kung Fu or Chi Gong.

Dear Dave, Very many thanks for your positive words. We are passionate about our arts, both in learning and teaching. We are working on expanding the range of vegetables that we grow but we do believe that homegrown organic food is the best for our students. I am sorry not to have met you personally but am very glad that you thought us worth visiting. You and your family will be very welcome back Dave, Iain Armstrong, Chief Instructor.

Best thing I've done in a long time!!
Aug 2019
There guys are the real deal - truly inspiring and impressive. Master Ian embodies Kung-fu, as do all the instructors. Each has made (or is in the process of making) the art their own. Kind, calm, generous, and genuinely interested in teaching and sharing the mental, physical and spiritual benefits of this most profound and ancient practice. Their dedication, passion, skill and knowledge is contageous!!. Kung-fu is not an abstract concept here, but a lived experience, built into the very minds & bodies of those who truly practice the art.

I learnt so much in only two weeks - it is hard to know where to start. It has been a transformative experience with ongoing benefits for my mental, physical and spiritual health!! I was a complete novice, with no experience at all of martial arts, and certainly not the fittest, youngest or most flexible of people. To be honest I was a bit anxious on the first day - wondering what i had gotten myself into. However Master Ian and instructors very quickly put me at ease with the sheer genuine enthusiasm, care, dedication and good will that they embody. Every single one of the teaching team was truly impressive and completely professional - a testament to Master Ian and the Nam Yang school, its ethos, how it is run, and the calibre and dedication of those selected to become instructors. I felt incredibly luck to have such impressive people guiding me - and being there in the low season meant that there were sometimes more instructors than students!! It was nuts the amount of guidance I received!! Always patient, friendly, helpful and encouraging - it seemed to me that every instructor actually really enjoyed sharing their art with me. Despite me probably not being the best student - I couldn't help but learn!!

The food was great. As you would expect at a Kung-fu retreat - simple & very healthy. I loved it - it (like everything else there) seemed entirely appropriate. Similarly the accommodation was simple, neat & clean. The cool little township of Pai is only 10 minutes (push) bike ride away - quirky little cafes restaurants, shops and markets. The whole area was lush & beautiful when I was there (late August into early September - the tail end of the rainy season).

I had a great time, I was sad to leave and wish I could have stayed longer. I hope to return someday soon. In the mean time I will continue to enjoy the benefits that my two weeks at Nam Yang gave me, and try to embody the teachings I was so generously given.

Dear Ben, My most sincere thanks for your very complimentary review. I am very pleased that we were able to make you feel like this. Our whole reason for existing is to 'live the spirit of Kung Fu' and I genuinely believe that so long as we do this then we will be able to give the best experience to all who come here. You make a very good point about the climate - July through September really is a great time to come. Especially for those who want to see Pai at its greenest. You were a great student and I really hope that you will make it back here again one day Ben, Iain.
