About
The Phang Nga Elephant Park is a small family-run park. Our family has cared for elephants for over 150 years and we opened the park in 2015 so that we could keep our elephants in a caring and stress-free environment and give our visitors an extraordinary and life-enhancing experience. We are dedicated to providing our elephants with the highest quality of life possible and our strong belief in human-elephant interaction is what makes the Phang Nga Elephant Park so special.

    Dream visit.
Absolutely brilliant! If you love elephants or indeed wildlife, this is a must! Reliant on charity they do fantastic work looking after 8 elephants. You get up and close, walking with them into the jungle, feeding them bananas and pineapples and fonallybathing with them. You get your own personal elephant and handler whilst your there. Drinks and lunch can be provided. Must do activity.

    JUST “WOW” must do experience!!!
Wow! I have to say this was THE best thing we have done so far on our Thailand trip! The volunteers Anna & Matt are so friendly and knowledgeable and all the staff even though they speak limited English were wonderful and friendly. You could see the elephants were very happy and well cared for and loved to be fed the bananas and play in the rock pool. If you do 1 thing in Khao Lak you MUST do this!!!

An amazing day with these elephants
We absolutely loved our day at this elephant sanctuary. The staff were all kind and caring to the elephants but allowed us to interact with them and helped us feel confident around such huge animals. Matt was a great guide and really facilitated an amazing day for us. It was incredible to walk in the jungle and feed the elephants - we felt like we got to know their personalities and felt very privileged to spend time so close up with them. Whole family of animal lovers were in our element. Brilliant day.

    Amazing experience!!!
What an amazing experience! I believe this is a very ethical place and really care about the elephants. They allow human interaction, but the elephants are in control and can totally turn their backs or walk away. There are 8 female elephants and we spent time with two of them, Jana and Nam-Tan. Both adorable! We walked next to them, gave them snacks (bananas, pineapples, sugar cane) and bathed them. They seemed to really enjoy it, and it was magical to us, to be so close! The tour included a yummy lunch, the facilities were comfortable, and staff was very friendly. Totally recommend it!!

    Must do in Phang Nga
This is such an awesome experience! Ammy, Matt and the rest of the team were very kind and knowledgeable. The tours are in small groups which makes the experience more personable and less stressful for the elephants. It can be a bit intimidating choosing an “ethical” sanctuary, but rest assure this park truly cares about these gorgeous animals. I highly recommend this tour!

    Experience of a lifetime
What a wonderful place for Elephants to reside, had the half day care package & it was faultless, just the 2 of us walking with our Elephant "Ploysuay" through jungle surroundings, then prepared some food to feed her from a raised rocky platform amazing, then a gentle walk back to a pool area to give her a good wash & scrub which she seemed to thoroughly enjoy. After showering we were treated to a wonderful lunch to end our day. A special mention for Dong our Mahout a truly wonderful young man 5 ⭐ Highly recommend

    Fantastic Experience
This was without doubt one of the best trips I have ever done. We were very careful about visiting an Elephant Reserve and did a great deal of research before we selected this one. At no point did we feel that the elephants were being coerced into doing something they didn’t want to do and it was very clear that their wellbeing and welfare was the reserves ultimate priority. We were given a full explanation as to how elephants and the Thai people were intertwined over history and how and why that continues to this day. If you want to experience anything like this whilst in Thailand, go here, don’t be tempted by cheaper poor imitations.

A great experience to see these majestic animals
Visited here as part of a longer day trip so was only a short visit. The elephants all seemed happy in both their main enclosure and when they came to us for feeding. I feel that if you visit a zoo then visiting here was no different, the staff clearly have a great bond with their animals and they are well looked after. A once in a lifetime experience to interact with these beautiful animals

The best time with the Elephants, not to be missed...
What an amazing experience, if you want to go see Elephants when in Thailand I can highly recommend this park. On entry I cried with joy at seeing the elephants bathing and you could see they were really enjoying it, quite playful. You could see the elephants were well cared for and they had very a huge natural enclosure. Saiparn greeted us and explained about the elephants and their life at the park, some had previously come from the logging industry and retired there. We feed them and bathed them in a large pool, what a fabulous experience, when do you get to do that in the UK. I would have gone everyday if we could have. The elephants are so gentle and enjoyed a good bathe. I easily observed the relationship the Mahouts have with their elephants, it is very strong and quite wonderful. A lovely send off too with a refreshing drink, fresh fruit and a gift of a framed photo of your time with the elephants to take way. Fantastic value for money and a day I will never forget . Thank you Saiparn and your team... Hope to return one day...

Tangtai - a beautiful creature and an equally incredible experience!
What a morning, we chose the dawn excursion, which consisted of being collected from our hotel, driven to the sanctuary, greeted by the tour guides with fresh coffee and a general chat. After this we walked into the jungle/forest across a river to find our elephant, we were allocated a beautiful elephant Tangthai, a 17 year old female, who was so pleased to see us, making some excited noises as we walked up with the mahout (elephant guide) we spent the next 20 minutes or so being introduced to Tangthai and a couple of other Elephants that we would spend the morning with, it was 1 elephant per couple, meaning you get plenty of interaction with your elephant. Taking lots of pictures and lots of rubbing and stroking. Our elephants then led us the way back to the park. Once back at the park, the mahouts quickly showed us a health check, these animals are so intelligent!! We went on to then feed Tangthai some sweet treats - Banana and Pineapple, she seemed to love these and it was a great time to get some incredible photos! After this it was bath time, the elephants again led the way into the wash pool, some more mischievous than the others, at one point one of the elephants fully dived in and submersed herself, she was the youngest elephant in our group at 6 years old so perhaps showing her age!!! The elephants loved their bath, cradling in as you give them a good scratch and closing their eyes as if a sign to show they are enjoying it (a little bit like a dog does when you give them a scratch behind the ear!) And as we and the elephants left the pool, another great photo op, Tangthai and 2 of the other elephants who were part of our group decided to start a water fight spraying all with their trunks! We were then able to use the showers on site and were laid out a lovely lunch! Before coming out to Thailand, it has and always be a hot topic on ‘ethical’ elephant parks and sanctuaries - I can safely say that these elephants are so happy, incredibly well looked after and it is easy to see the bond between the elephants and their Mahouts. The Elephants have vast grounds to forage, and we saw the bonds also between the elephants, including the aforementioned 6 year old, winding up the grandmother of the group (70 years old!!)as we walked past her, making sure to give her a poke with her trunk! A truly incredible experience and as someone who is an animal lover of all kinds, I can only say I came away feeling really happy with how the elephants are cared for! If you chose the dawn/dusk experience which means you walk through the river - I’d recommended wearing crocs or trainers you don’t mind getting wet! And also mosquito repellent as you trek a little while into the jungle/forest!

Wonderful experience for the whole family. Cannot recommend highly enough. Elephants looked after so well. Expanding their conservation plans. A full day spent in the jungle rather than many tours that offer a short time with elephants to bathe them. If you really want to hang out and lean about elephant conservation then this is the park for you.

The park is very modern and beautiful, however making business seemed to be more important than the elephants themselves. They are forced to do what mahouts are requiring and when the tourists want, e.g.during bathing elephants had to lie but ours didn't want to, so the commands were given constantly also she had some fresh wounds (as we guess from the hook) behind the ear. We left the park with bad feelings that paid a lot of money (8k baths for 2 adults and one 4yo) just to promote such activities.

What a fantastic ethical elephant sanctuary. The staff are so gentle with the elephants. The interaction between kwan-chang and elephant is amazing and you can see the love between them. (We had Por and Tai). This is a must do activity. Tour guide Alex from Australia was the best, make sure you tip these guys because they are all volunteers .

I appreciate your kind remarks about the Park and I am delighted that you had a lovely visit. Thanks for the comments about Alex, who is one of our Volunteers (you can read about the Volunteer Program on the website under About us/Our Team and Volunteer Program). The bond between elephant and kwan chang is very special and the key to proper elephant care and husbandry. There is a short video about the relationship between one of our kwan changs and his elephant on YouTube if you Google 'Mahout - Portrait of an elephant keeper'. I think it explains it all perfectly. Thanks so much for coming. I hope you will return one day. Best wishes Jake

We had a great visit at Phang Nga Elephant Park. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and I appreciated our guide Amie giving us a lot of information about the park itself as well as the history and treatment of elephants in Thailand right up front. She addressed any and all concerns that any of us had, such as riding the elephants, the history and usage of bullhooks/ankus, where the elephants lived and why some of them are tied down. It made us feel comfortable with our decision to visit and we learned a lot. Our kwan changs were wonderful as well, they definitely seemed to have a special bond with their elephants and treated them well. They made us feel welcome and took a ton of pictures throughout our visit. I look at the framed photographs we got at the end of our day often and am glad we visited.

Thank you for writing and also for the kind comments about Amie, who was one of our wonderful Volunteers, but sadly she has now returned to UK. All of our Volunteers are asked to answer all questions with complete transparency as there is nothing to hide at Phang Nga Elephant Park. Welfare is paramount and we try to keep a very high standard and are very selective in choosing our mahouts or Kwan-changs. I am glas you liked the photo and I hope it will remind you of a special day with the magnificent Asian elephant! Very best wishes Jake

As much as my children enjoyed the day, I totally agree with the other lower star reviews. I booked this place based on how ethical it was towards the elephants, but it felt like another money making scheme and the elephants welfare is not top of the list.

The feeding, walking and bathing the elephants was a memorable experience for my family but the bottom of my gut did tell me it felt wrong. You could tell the elephants wasn’t totally up for doing what they were told to do, but did so because they would be told off, and all mahout had sticks to use (which I didn’t see them use but was more of a back up) which was explained to us as being ‘good for them’

When we arrived the elephants were in an electric fenced off area, with one elephant who was ‘troublesome’ as she had previously been working in a hotel locked in a small room. As she had been fighting with another elephant, she was in an electric fenced enclosure alone until she proved herself. Not quite the treatment an elephant deserves after being locked in a room her whole life. I do believe they let her out but I don’t think this will fix her past if what is being done to her is being locked in somewhere again. I understand the guests have to be made safe, but let her be somewhere else and not on display if this is the case.

The showers and toilets on site are clean, the food provided was delicious and pick up provided from hotel was good.
As an overall experience it was great but after listening to the guide my heart just felt it wasn’t right. It’s a long way from what elephants in thailand were previously treated like, but i still think there’s a long way to go.

The documentary ‘Black Fish’ on Netflix come to mind a lot when here, I know they are different animals but both very intelligent and emotional, and although it looks good for the audience, the elephants seemed unhappy.

We visited the elephant sanctuary with a 4 year old and 2 year old and can honestly say it was a really life affirming experience. The elephants were clearly loved, the theme throughout was dignity and respect for these incredible animals. This gave our children the opportunity to wash them and get close enough to enjoy their company without feeling like the elephants were being exploited. Our Canadian guide Julia was knowledgable, great with kids, and clearly loved animals, her enthusiasm and passion for animal care was contagious. The lunch provided was just delicious, with cold drinks and the opportunity for the kids to do some painting thrown in too. I could not recommend this experience highly enough.

Had a very negative experience today in the Phang Nga Elephant Park, where I had to pay 300THB for just a short video. I arrived there with my girlfriend, wanted to get information for friends and made a short video of the area, whereupon an employee came over with a brisk step and demanded 300THB. When I asked what for, she said, among other things, for coming into the camp and taking photos and videos. Since I didn't see any prohibition signs or other recognizable signs, I denied her request. She then put me through to her boss, to whom I explained the situation. I had a somewhat longer conversation with the operator, in which I explained that, among other things, there was no indication anywhere that there was a fee for taking photos or videos and that I actually wanted to do some positive advertising for friends.
I finally agreed with the operator that we shouldn't pay anything, just for looking at the area and getting information.
Well, I have to warn against this facility though. Be careful when visiting this facility.
Sure, it's interesting to see how they work up close with the elephants, but who knows what the bill will be at the end.

Firstly to mention that any posts here talking about elephant rides are talking about the wrong place! That is not considered ethical nowadays. Our guide Anna was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We had a sense of bonding with ‘our’ elephant through the session, watching the care inspection of the body, taking a walk together while chatting with the Mamout, feeding her and bathing together. Lunch was great! This the best elephant experience we’ve had owing to unrushed, intimate experience and how much we learned
