About
Loi Krathong is a nationwide festival and will be celebrated throughout Thailand on the full moon of the 12th month of the traditional lunar calendar (around November). Sukhothai was where the tradition originated, and is one of the most popular destinations to celebrate the festival. The event usually takes places over five days and nights and features several activities, most of which will take place in Sukhothai's Historical Park (the old city). Highlights of the celebration include: floating of the traditional lanterns, fireworks, folk dancing and a spectacular light and sound presentation.

We were so lucky to happen to be in Sukhothai on November 17 for the annual light and sound show called Loy Krathong. Hundreds of singers and dancers in colorful costumes entertain you by the lake in the Historical Park. The show ended with a memorable display of hundreds of large candle lanterns released in to the night sky. They looked like constellations as they rose high in the sky. The next morning you saw the remnants of the lanterns strewn along the road and caught in trees. If you have the ability to schedule your trip around this date, I would highly recommend it.

The Loy Krathong festival is a yearly event and originated in Sukhothai because it was the capital city many years ago. The festival is in November and is a wonderful display of history, entertainment and a brilliant firework display.

Great cultural shows in a huge historic park half November each year.
At the Sukhothai Historical Park.
Food, drinks and local specialities
3 sites with sadly enough now 3 different entrance fees instead of a combined ticket.

The whole event lasts 10 days or evenings. The full moon evening, Loy Kratong, is the main day, but most Thais have already been there the weekend before.
On the main day there is a parade and fireworks in the evening.
