Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Built around 860 AD to supply the city with water, where it was located away away from rivers or the sea.
They can be viewed from the top of the information center building. But if you want to see them up close, visit the park where they are located, which is a stone’s throw away from the information center.

Nice to see and understand the work that took place so many years ago. Shame it was dirty. It is close to the Mosque and Medina

These are situated on the other side of the city from the Grand Mosque. You can see the basins from the top platform of the main entrance building. The basins are certainly a must see when visiting Kairouan, they are after all a major engineering achievement (for those times). As a plus, there is a restroom that you can use in the main building.

Kairouan is in the middle of an arid steppe, so water was always a problem ; so the Aghlabids, great builders that they were, decided to build these 2 huge reservoirs in the 9th century. Water was brought in from an inland river and also via a refurbished Roman aqueduct.
Now, I consider myself a history buff and I get pretty excited with engineering wonders like these basins, but it is a little deflating to stand there on the roof of the information center and look down on the dirty green water and neglected area around it. Could be better.

There are two huge bassins in Kairouan where water distribute to the city. I was here with my private tour guide before. I went to the great mosque. It is really nice to visit here. There is a small souvenir shop here at building and you can have some tea or coffee there too.

The basin is so beautiful and I can’t believe that the ancient Roman was knowledgeable to construct many basics to collect water. They use the sentiment theory to purify the water. Now it’s open as a public park.

Although a pinnacle of engineering at its time, a complete dump and dirty. Shame it has been neglected and in the surrounding you can either only see rubbish or frisky teenagers.

Visited here are part of a larger tour day. Did not walk to the basins but it was nice to see from the top of the building. Fascinating history and ingenuity involved. But really don’t need more than 5-10 minutes here.

This water basin is not what it supposedly used to be a few years ago. Now the water is dirty and it is garbage all around. Seems like the city doesn`t have money or prioritize to maintain the site, too bad.

We briefly stopped here on our way to the mosque. There isn't much to see in all honesty. You go up a flight of stairs which provides a good photo opportunity.
Watch out for the guy outside with a camel. If you take a picture he will try and get you to pay a few dinars and it just isn't worth the hassle.
You also have to buy a "photography licence" to take pictures in the city. It's one dinar per camera although nobody checks. It would be easier if they just said that it was an admission fee.
Most organised tours stop at this destination so you'll see it whether you want to or not
