“Either the donkey will die or the emir (padishah) will die!” This phrase of Nasreddin became known to me at the age of 11-12, when I read a book about this smart and cunning hero of Central Asian legends. I wonder how many of my young contemporaries today have read this book and understand the essence of this phrase? I am sure, unfortunately, that there are very few. Many popular anecdotes and parables tell about Nasreddin in Central Asian and Middle Eastern countries. It operates in Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Central Asian and even Chinese literature. But for me, since childhood, he definitely lives somewhere here, in Central Asia, near Bukhara!
The image of the people's favorite is contradictory. He is either a fool, or a scholar-theologian, at the same time a rebel and a philosopher, a holy fool and a sage. Very often, Khoja risks violating social norms and overstepping decency. This is what he is - Khoja Nasreddin. The monument in the historical center of Bukhara is magnificent. Khoja, on his constant companion - a donkey, is in a hurry to new adventures.

The statue of Hodja Nasredin is located between the Labi Hauz and the Nadir Divan Begi Medrese. The popular mischievous, roughly comparable to Till Owl Mirror, sits on a donkey. Locals and tourists alike like this bronze statue as a photo motif.

I really enjoyed seeing our friend Nasreddin Hodje and his donkey in a Beautiful courtyard, next to restaurants and shops.
Usually I heard in the summer there is along line with kids wanting to take pics. Since it was winter there was no line.
Don’t forget to take picture patting the donkey. It gives good luck. Uzbek parents are commonly seen placing their kids on top of the donkey.

When the local guide (a young man) sincerely asked “why are we meeting here?”, my wife and I answered - Leonid Solovyov.
There are phenomena that connect us now. And this character is one of them.
P.S. I don’t know why, but for me he seemed like a cheerful “pot-bellied”

Probably, it was in this place that the dispute between Khoja Nasreddin and the Bukhara emir took place - on the subject of teaching a donkey to read in 20 years... This “historical” anecdote is known to everyone. Well, another well-known “historical” anecdote about Khoja Nasreddin - he has 8 (eight!) tombstones...

I find it fascinating that a statue was built for a famous comical figure in Muslim tradition. Hodja Nasreddin, or Joha as he is knows to Arabs, is known for his innocent and naive nature. His stories are full of irony.
One famous story is about him and his son sharing a donkey. When he rode and had his son walk, he was seen as abusive to his son. When he walked and his son rode, his son was seen as disrespectful to his father. When they both rode together, they were seen as cruel to the donkey. When they both walked, they were seen as stupid for not using the donkey. The moral of the story is that you can never please everyone!

Very popular wirh the toursits, the statue to the mystical Hodja Nasruddin stands in a, small left park in front of an elegant madrassah just a few yards from the Lyabi Hausz.
He was a teacher who helped the poor, much revered in the area as a heroic figure. If he existed at all of course!
All throughout Central Asia he is famous. Here in bronze, he is depicted on a donkey in a typical quirky pose, arm raised.
Don't miss it, it really is a lovely piece of statuary.

The monument to Hodja Nasreddin is a must photo op whilst in Bukhara. It is located at Lyabi hauz and is rarely not surrounded by persons seeking photos with him. He is riding his faithful donkey and has a carefree smile on his face. The bronze statue is shiny in some places due to the constant rubbing for good luck which locals practice. It is in a shady area with benches, which is great to take a break from the heat. The sculpture has been at this site for forty years. Nasreddin is claimed by Bukhara but other countries such as Turkey, Iran and China (Uighurs) also lay claim to him.
His stories have been published since the 16th century, and are still read today. UNESCO declared 1996/7 the "Year of Nasreddin". It is said that some of his tales appear in Aesop's fables. He was immortalised by two Soviet films in the 1940's titled "Nasreddin in Bukhara" and "The Adventures of Nasreddin". Both of these films were set in Uzbekistan, with the first showing a few glimpses of Bukhara. Unfortunately both films are in Russian, but are available for viewing online. The Bukhara film, though black and white, gives the viewer an insight into the clothing and customs of the time. Naturally, the antics of Nasreddin will keep you watching.
This is not a must see, but an important part of culture which you may meet again as you travel through Asia. There are many attractions which can be viewed nearby, and this is a great place to start exploring the city.

Special monument in the heart of downtown Bukhara. Better to take the picture around 3-5pm when the sun shines directly towards the face of the horse and rider. It's near Lyab- I- Hauz square/plaza area.
