We landed up for a change from Minfiza and Mavrigi. Our seating was outdoors near the Hauz(Pond) with a view of a stage where the local band was playing and people dancing. Gave it a nice festive air. The food was good, the only reason for three Stars was the service, in which we probably got overshadowed by some VIP who was demanding continuous attention.

The heart and happening area of Bukhara old town. From afternoon till late night the atmosphere of this area is magnificent. The surrounding area centering a pond (water body) with fountain has lot food options, nice seating arrangement, trading domes, hotels, madrasahs.

Nice area with the artificial lake, even in winter it was a lovely place to take photos. There are ducks in the little lake and their houses are the miniatures of the monuments of Bukhara.

The square has some nice buildings and the pond, although always smelly, with the old trees is actually rather nice, but tourism has taken over and especially at night we found this an eyesore in the otherwise lovely Bukhara. Colored moving lights, loud music, terrible decoration.. all very tacky touristic stuff that should not belong in a culturally relevant city like Bukhara. Hopefully this will not spread to other areas of town as the whole reputation of Bukhara would be ruined by it. One cannot avoid the square, but there are much nicer places to feel and see the real Bukhara and its people.

If you are in Bukhara, then this is a must do place.. the word lyabi means -by the pond..and as told this is one of the last ponds that have survived the test of times!
This place is buzzing with tourists n locals and there are many shops that sells souvenirs like magnets, carpets, rugs, handmade goods, pottery and lovely ikat fabrics and clothing. There are a few monuments and madrasahs that are near and one can walk and take a look at all the famous places that are worth visiting like Chor Minor, Kukeldash Madrasah, etc.

Lyab-i-Hauz was the center of the old city, and the ideal spot to begin exploring. Many buses and taxis can be found a short walk west on Mekhtar Anbar Street. Lyab-i-Hauz is actually the name of the architectural complex which includes the Nadir Divan-begi Khanqah and madrassa which face each other across the pond. The actual name of the pond is Divan-begi. The pond is considered the main attraction and a must photo op for most visitors. There is a plastic camel to the south of the pond where tourists pose for photos. The dining furniture around the pond makes it a comfortable place to relax and watch the many ducks as they go paddling by.

We found the prices here quite high and opted to purchase f&b at the many smaller shops on the outskirts of the old city which a had local and not "tourist" prices. The complex was constructed between 1620-1622. The Khanka was completed first in 1620, and the pond dug in front of it. On the eastern side of the pond, the madrasa was designed to face the Khanka (known as "kosh" design) and completed two years later. Nadir Divan-begi was the official tax collector and second in command to the Emir. This pond is one of the last remaining in the city, as most have been emptied. The Ismael Somoni mausoleum and the Bolo Hauz Mosque, both have ponds which can also be visited, and are a 15-20 minute walk in a westerly direction.

The pond is supplied by the Shakhrud Canal, which runs east to west through the city. It is said that the trees in this area are older than the 17th century buildings. This is an area of many attractions and directional maps and signs are posted to assist you.

After a long day of sightseeing you can choose one of the restaurants, bars or cafes located around the water tank to relax and refresh yourself. Even during the hot summer it is super popular with tourist and locals alike.
