Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In the heart of the old town, the Grand Mosque just sparkles with history and spirituality. An old keeper can come and unlock the door so you can climb to the top at non-prayer hours. The view at the top is a 360 of all of Agadez and just magnificent.

A trip to Agadez just isn't complete without visiting the grande mosquee. The mud-brick construction makes it a pretty unique mosque, and the view from the roof is lovely. As of December 2015, the minaret was closed for renovation, so I couldn't climb it, but could still access the roof to see across the whole city. Getting access was a bit of a challenge. First we had to find the gatekeeper, enlisting the help of the souvenir shop owner across the street to call around and locate him. Then we needed permission from the Sultan of Agadez, so we drove with the gatekeeper to the Sultan's palace (next to the mosque), and they got permission on our behalf. Then it was back to the mosque to finally enter. In total, it took about 30 minutes to track down everyone and get permission, but it was worth it. Since it wasn't prayer time, we got access to the entire complex- the gatekeeper even pointed out the Sultan's private tunnel where he can access the mosque directly from his palace.

As I crossed the desert from Tammanrasset to In-Guezzam in the Republique du Niger, we drove in my Landrover Stationwagon Mark III to Agadez. there is the old Mosque, and because it was just a Friday, we went for the Salat ( the prayer). Taking pictures was of course out of the question, but the experience , the connection with the other believers from all quarters, standing next to each other, toes of the feet connected with the toes of the feet of your neighbour, a man with a long grey beard, a white turban, a long light blue djebellah, on the other side of me a robust, black Nubian, all standing in rows under the small arches of the hall, executing the prescribed ritual movements of the prayer, was as it were etched with an engraving pin on my retina.

One of the great wonders of the world. Don't pay more than 5000 CFA to go up to the roof of the minaret!

Right in the center of the old town Agadez, the Grande Mosque is not an exceptional monument to visit but, if you happen to be in Agadez it is a must see. Its minaret is entirely made of earth and is a beautiful sight in the old town. Most certainly it is worth a visit.

The view from the top of the minaret is unbeatable. A small donation will give you access to most of the mud brick mosque. Watch for spider webs and bats... lots and lots of bats going up the tower.

There is not much too see but it always needs imagination to honour a building from 1450, especially if it is made from this material. One can climb up the tower. The entrance is at 3 meters following narrow stairs. The one can walk and crawl up the narrow stairs. If you are overweight or have broad shoulders just forget it. Cover your head because you would not want the bat excrement in your hair, let alone the bats you will encounter on your way up. This is a nice un-boring visit. If you enjoy such adventures go for it. Don't go on Fridays.

Don't miss this on your trip to Niger, it's a beautiful mosque. I recommend getting a guide to support the local guide community and go through the necessary authorizations.
