Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had gotten to the bridge entrance at 3:30pm fully aware that the museum closes at 4pm. It was the best we could manage with our tight schedule. However, even after letting the bridge worker know we would be happy to pay full price for the remainder of time they were open, we were still denied access. The worker also spoke no English so be prepared to use google translate.

This is a must museum if you are going to visit Matchupicchu! It’s a small museum which means you won’t be overloaded with info. In English & Spanish. Presentation is varied and well done. We spent just under 2 hrs there and learned so much about the mysteries of the Inka empire. Fantastic!!! Free if you go after 12 and you show your Matchupicchu ticket. Downside is that is a 20 minute walk from town. I don’t know why that don’t have a shuttle bus…

As part of your Machu Picchu ticket you get free entry to this museum it gives great insight into the city and is a good option to visit the day before your visit. It has information on the city during it's building, use and rediscovery.

This museum is a little out of the way, but worth going to if you have the time. It is about a 20 minute walk from Aguas Calientes or you can have the Machu Picchu bus drop you off on your way back from MP, which is what we did. Small museum with some interesting artifacts. We had a guide at MP, but the museum added to our knowledge. We spent about 30 minutes here. Scenic walk back to Aguas Calientes.

We found this to be too far off the beaten path (its a long hike on dirt road outside of Agua Calientes) and not worth the trek. It is a tiny museum with hardly any artifacts and mostly info you could have gotten off a Google search. Don't waste your time. Visit one of the museums in Cusco or Lima and get your history off the internet before visiting MP.

I had some time to kill in Aguas Calientes and decided to walk to the museum. The best part was the walk.
Dead serious.
I went in and for S/. 22.00 Sole (about $8.50 USD) you walk around the world's smallest museum. Took me about 90 seconds to see everything.
Don't get me wrong, I normally like museums and artifacts, but this was put together very "cheap." Looks like the curator slapped a couple rocks in glass cases and called it a museum.
He fooled me out of money, I hope he doesn't fool you after you read this.
I would have paid 22.00 Sole to cross the bridges and take pictures of the scenery leading up to the museum rather than walk into this disappointment.

It's a little out of the way--you have to walk down the road to Machu Picchu, about 1.5 km to the bridge and then the museum is tucked in the woods to the right after the bridge. The walk was actually pretty cool along the raging river, but there are buses passing frequently and it was rainy and muddy (Feb). The museum isn't that big--7 small rooms, but is really cool if you have some time before or after visiting MP to give some perspective and information about the site. There is a "time capsule" room that tells what else was going on in the world when MP was built, some artifacts from the site (including the only piece of gold found there), information about the excavation, etc. It doesn't take long to see everything that is there, but there also isn't much else to do in Aguas Calientes so I think it's worth visiting if you have some extra time. There's also a botanical garden you can visit, though from looking in quickly it didn't seem like there were too many flowers blooming.

We went to this museum after spending a day at Macchu Picchu and another at Wayna Picchu. The museum really helped to tie all of the information together after having seen it for ourselves! It's in a strange location (30 min walk out of town) but if you go when it's not crazy busy, the bus driver will drop you off on your way back to town from Macchu Picchu and then you can walk back to town when you're done.

Excellent small museum with lots of important background info to compliment your trip up to Macchu Picchu. I would recommend going the day before you see the main site as you will gain insight to the lives of the people, how they constructed their homes, rituals and ceramics used in these rituals...even the granite bowls for astronomical observation will broaden your appreciation for the site.
There is a lovely small garden alongside the museum which has samples of the plants important to the Inca. If you are lucky, you will be there in orchid season, if not, there are plenty of other fascinating plants...inca flowers, red lilies, coca plants.
Seeing the museum takes about 45 minutes and the garden about 20. It is a lovely walk down to the museum from Aguas Calientes alongside the river. The scenery is gorgeous and there are some nice local touches, such as a local Catholic shrine.

You will enjoy Machupicchu more and better understand the history of the Inka people if you have time to visit museum first. We walked from Aquas Calientes in the afternoon, the day before visiting Machupicchu. Since we brought our entrance tickets to Machupicchu the caretaker just stamped it and let us in. Be aware of opening/ closing times.

Hola !
Written 13 April 2019
You can buy your ticket for the museum in advance online on the same site as you buy your ticket for Machu Picchu. I don’t think you can buy it when you get to the museum.
Aguas Calientes doesn’t have much to see or do. I would suggest going the night before Machu Picchu so you can get there early in the morning, then stay one more night because you’re going to be tired after Machu Picchu.

How do I get there from the MP train station? What is the fee and what are the hours of operation?
Written 6 December 2016
You can walk but it will take about 45 mins. The buses to MP go past it but will not drop you off!
The only other way would be a taxi.
I don't know the opening hours but you can check that on their website.
