Amazing kids - very welcoming school
We are spending two weeks volunteering to help teach the kids, while we acclimatized before some big treks. It’s a lovely way to get to know the locals and practice our Spanish with kids. Yuri- the director is incredibly friendly and nice. He has invited us to go on local hikes over the weekend. Charlotte- the volunteer coordinator is wonderfully welcoming and so helpful. Highly recommend if you want a way to immerse yourself in local daily life.

Amazing organisation and amazing Spanish lessons
Seeds of Hope is a fantastic organisation delivering meaningful help to children in Huaraz. They also offer amazing Spanish lessons, either privately or as part of a fixed course. I found the lessons that I had with Ethel unbelievably effective and helpful and I was so pleased with how my Spanish improved while I was here. I also loved being invited to join Ethel's English class in a local secondary school. I can't recommend Seeds of Hope enough!

    Great organization, lovely people.
Great opportunity to practice your Spanish while tutoring some incredible kids! The director, Yuri, is very welcoming, and often leads staff (and sometimes students) on weekend hikes in the area. Overnight trips are the best! Local friends also stop by from time to time, and they're absolutely lovely, and very fun to talk to. I stayed for three months in the dry season (winter), and had a fantastic time!

Dedicated local NGO for intl volunteering and Spanish lessons
Seeds of Hope is a wonderful community-based NGO that works with and for marginalized children. I spent a summer (Jun–Aug) here as a volunteer school tutor, and it was beyond my expectations (FWIW, you don't need to spend two months here as I do; there are plenty of people coming for two weeks if that suits them better!). The kids are simply lovely to work with, and you are indeed helping them incrementally as it is imperative for them to finish homework, keep up with school, and have social interactions with others. Recently, Seeds resumed its Nutrition Program so that kids will have sufficient meals for their growth. During the weekend, volunteers typically go on hikes together or explore the city. Meanwhile, Seeds also provides ad hoc or structured Spanish lessons if you want to improve your language skills –– the teachers –– Ethel and Jenny –– are patient, skillful, and simply fantastic people to hang out with. I would wholeheartedly recommend involving with Seeds either as a volunteer or simply taking Spanish classes here, and I'm sure you will have a good time like many of us did :)

Seeds of Hope changed my life!
Seeds of Hope does not only changes the lives of children, but of everyone that participates in it. Such an incredible community as well as the city of Huaraz and its people. As a volunteer, each day with the students was a memory. Wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else!

    wonderful organization
I recently went back a year after spending 7 months with Seeds. Despite my long time there, leaving was the hardest part. So I was thrilled I was able to make a quick trip back to visit. All the students are so keen to learn and full of gratitude. Every day, I looked forward to their excited greeting of "PROFESORA!!" each morning and afternoon. During the school year, I helped with homework or anything else they needed help with, and during the summer program, I taught math to the primary students. During recreo, we played lots of games and I even taught some students how to crochet, so if you have a specific idea of something you would like to teach, they'll be eager to learn. The students only speak Spanish, although they are very patient and will wait for you to figure out the word or use a translator, knowing some Spanish will be extremely useful. If you are looking to improve your language skills, you can take lessons from Ethel, a local teacher. For class, we would walk around Huaraz chatting, rather than sitting in a classroom. With the exception of two weeks, I was the only international volunteer; however, I still found many activities to fill my time whether in the city of Huaraz or the nearby mountains. Huaraz is easy and safe to walk around. The market is bustling with vendors selling some of the best fruits and vegetables you will ever eat. There are many great restaurants with affordable food (I'm vegetarian and I was able to find a dish at most places). The Andes, which serve as a beautiful backdrop to the city, are full of beautiful lagunas and glaciers, which you can easily visit on the weekends. I truly had a wonderful time with Seeds!

    Absolutely AMAZING
I took 4 hours of spanish lesson with Seeds. The teacher Jenny, was amazing, very patient, and the lessons she prepared were clear and very usefull. Yuri the manager is extremely kind, helpfull, and flexible with my tabletime. He also helped me with tips about the town and activities to do around. Also, Seeds is an association that helps kids with family issues ; part of the money you pay goes to this cause. Don't have any doubts, go for it you'll never regret it !!!!!!

Warm and safe place to develop your Spanish
I went to Seeds of Hope for one month. Initially planned to do the Spanish course for 2 weeks but instantly extended my stay because I learn a lot and wanted to get better at it. They make a plan based on your skill level and needs. I liked how they were genuinely interested in your life & goals , teach you about their culture and even give you some slang to play with. Also, you get to know the teachers better and better each day and they truly are wonderful, open and kind people. Seeds also provides warm showers and a bed. They have a guitar and the atmosphere just really feels like a home.On some evenings you cook together , watch a movie , go out for a drink or even a karaoke night in case you're interested (: They provide a wonderful trip to Laguna Churup which is really beautiful. Would 100% recommend. It's a place where you truly can be yourself and the month was over in a blink. When I left Seeds of Hope my whole South American trip was already different since I had a decent conversation with the taxi man and had no struggles understanding him whatsoever. I can genuinely say it changed my travels and made me capable of connecting with so many Spanish speaking people already when I went to my next destination, which was Huanchaco. Forever grateful ❤️

    excellent volunteering experience
I was volunteering at Seeds of Hope for seven weeks and it was a great experience! I met so many nice people and I was able to get to know a new culture really well. The work with the kids was always funny and I enjoyed a lot spending time with them and helping them with their school works. They are so grateful and kind! With Yuri, the organisation’s manager, I had an amazing time as well. He always makes sure that you’re fine and tries his best if you need anything. At the weekends he showed me some breathtaking places and we did some great activities in and around Huaraz together. During these weeks I could really improve my Spanish skills which was great. I am forever grateful for my time in Huaraz and I can only recommend volunteering at Seeds of Hope!

A home away from home in Huaraz
I was welcomed so warmly by Yuri into Seeds of Hope and didn't want to leave after my two weeks there! The two brilliant Spanish teachers Ethel and Jenni worked with me every weekday and were really flexible, which allowed me to do lots of day hikes. Lessons were fun and I felt scooped up into the Seeds family straight away. While I came primarily as a Spanish student, I was lucky enough to also have the opportunity to get to know some of the kids who are part of the Seeds programme, working with them on their homework. I also had the chance to visit a local secondary school with Ethel too - something which I really appreciated and allowed me to get to know the local culture much better than I otherwise could have. Would hugely recommend Seeds of Hope to anyone looking for a more culturally rich experience in Huaraz.

We wanted to start our South America trip in Huaraz and refresh our beginner Spanish and Seeds of Hope was the perfect introduction to the language, culture and things to do.

Yuri, the director, was incredibly welcome and made us feel completely at home, showing us the best spots for pollo a la brasa, chifa and introducing us to the local tonic, Chuchuhuasi. Isabella, the volunteer coordinator from the US, who is so warm and friendly, joined Yuri to pick us up from the station and later took us to the Rataquena Mirador, helping us settle in.

The Spanish lessons were exactly what we needed! The fantastic teachers, Ethel and Jenny, gave us the perfect mix of beginner Spanish, practical tips for the market, hostels and getting around, as well as the all important grammar. I wish we could have stayed longer but it was the grounding we needed to survive in Peru and have the confidence to always give Spanish a go! Depending on how many classes and volunteering you do, you can fit in lots of day hikes and activities too.

Although we didn’t join the volunteering in the school, it seemed like a lovely experience, helping the children with their homework. The school is a vital safe space for the local young people and, as Yuri puts it, is helping to break the cycle of poverty.

We met a great bunch of volunteers who we continued to travel with - together with Yuri, Ethel, Isabella and Jenny, they are friends for life! A highlight was definitely the karaoke with the whole gang.

Last but not least is the weekend camping trip to Laguna Mollaca. An amazing experience led by Yuri - a very beautiful place which not that many tourists go to but is definitely worth it.

I’m so grateful to Yuri and all the Seeds of Hope team for their kindness and for showing us all Huaraz has to offer. After a month here I’m sad to leave but I hope we’ll be back one day!

If you’re coming to Huaraz, head to Seeds!
