About
Three kilometres away from Podgorica, in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Moraca and Zeta, the ruins of the ancient town of Duklja are located. Duklja is first mentioned by Ptolemy, general in the army of Alexander the Great, in the 2nd century BC. Today this place is one of the most valuable testimonies of presence of the Roman Empire in Montenegro.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Duklja is 2,000 years old, and its managers manage it extremely shamefully. When we got there, we looked for an entrance where we could buy a ticket, but we couldn't find it. Then we noticed that the door was open and anyone could walk in and do whatever he wanted without control. The place is definitely worth a visit and can compete with many popular archaeological sites. So my rating (1) is for the managers, and the place itself deserves the highest rating (5).

I just spent three weeks living and working at Duklja, the most significant archaeological site in Montenegro. Whether you are interested in Roman history or archaeology, Duklja will remind you not of the importance that this site played as a provincial capital, but also that even today we are connected to a greater heritage. Some may call it "rubble" but what you see at Duklja is only a fraction of the city. Excavations are slow going due to limited funding. If you plan to wander Duklja as a tourist, please respect the space by not littering or climbing on the walls. Leave any excavations in tact, and take a moment to reflect on the incredible heritage of Montenegro.

I walked there on a cold January day which may be part of the reason I felt so underwhelmed when I finally reached the ruins. There are very few signs explaining what the ruins are, and although they are nice enough having been to Rome & Athens they just felt 'okay'.
Regardless, there is not a great deal to do in Podgorica so if you are there for a few days and have an interest in history it is probably worth it to go (also, it was free when I went and as far as I'm aware it's free year-round).

Remains of old town Duklja are located at the confluence of Zeta in Moraca, only 4-5 kilometers from the center of Podgorica. Unfortunately during many wars almost everything was destroyed, just a few of the old walls are preserved in the original.

This place is most interesting, because it remains mostly untouched. The vast field bordering on a rural community and a rail track reveals the remains (mostly foundations and some walls) of the ancient roman settlement Duclea. The remains that can be easily identified include a bath house, and the town forum. Worth the visit especially for history, archeology and photography buffs.

Bit out of town but easy to reach by car. However, the sight is not too impressive. Looks like a lot of heaps of stones.

We couldn't believe this place wasn't a paid attraction, or at least protected! But we spent a whole afternoon here in the sun, taking photos and checking out the incredible old history. Take a local to get the full rundown of the place - but definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Roman Ruins on a field the size of a soccer field, just outside of Podgorica. I would not have been too overwhelmed, if it hadn't been for the cute goats.
There's a nice spot to go swimming in the river close by.

A deserted place without due maintenance. But it's still worth visiting in good weather. Because it's very acient history. And it's close to Podgorica - just about 10-15 mins from the city center by car.

After Forum Romano this place does not impress a lot, but still if you are a history fan visit Duklija ruins to learn a bit more about Montenegro.

Does one just walk around the ruins? Are there any signs explaining what is there? Are any of the ruins recognizable as structures, or just loose stones strewn about? How much is a taxi from central Podgorica?
Thanks!
Written 18 May 2016
It's just a walk around the ruins. Some structures are (barely) recognizable. A one way taxi would be around 2-3 Euros, but it might be hard to find one for the way back. If you have a mobile, you can call one, of course:-) You can also walk back via the railway bridge. That would take about 40 minutes to downtown.
If you are there on a hot summer day: there are a couple of nice spots to jump into the river just south-east of the railway bridge.
