    Great, but can improve
A unique insight into life in Ceylon(emphasis on Northern Province) in the olden days. Old carvings and sculptures, antiques and collectibles are all stored on display. No fees required, you are able to donate to the Dept of Archaeology however. The setting is inside an olden style traditionally designed family home, which is nostalgic, but the ventilation is very low. Photography not allowed

Interesting but very poor lighting on the artefacts and dreadful ventilation
I have to agree with what has been written. The poor ventilation is what hits you and no fans working. The lighting is appauling and most of the artefacts you can’t see properly. You are ushered around quickly so you don’t get much time to appreciate the collections. The huge painting of queen victoria in her youth was impressive but again dreadful lighting. I also noticed how the donation box collection was and the rush to put my cash at the side of the letter box. Very bizarre.

    Wealth of heritage and knowledge
A large collection of pieces dating as far back as the 11th century if not earlier. These included a range of histories across Tamil, Sinhalese cultures as well as Dutch, English and Portuguese and even artefacts from Fiji. Luckily, one of the staff spoke English and was super knowledgeable! She guided us through the entire permanent collection and kindly answered any questions. The experience is free, but they have a donation box at the front on your way out.

My first visit but my partner had been here as kid when on Main street. Apparently the older exhibits pre AD 10 are not shown any longer!! Could somebody not have had photos of these?
Also a reasonable request not to take photos ,but in that case sell post cards and a simple photocopied commentary. Sadly neglected.

Condition of the museum is on the verge of "destruction" and interior lighting and ventilation feels like in a mountain cave. Only one lady officer provide English explanation or answer to questions. Should the government will pay attention to the status of this important place?

A hidden away museum but with some interesting exhibits including coins from the 1200s. There is a donation box at the end, the ‘guide’ took the money from my husband’s hand and pushed the note in the rear section where we were unable to tell if it actually went into the donation box.

A very small facility, but very interesting to walk around. Our "guide" was helpful. All in all I think it is worth a visit.

No cameras / photographs / video permitted inside. No leaflets or books on Jaffna history. The staff are not educated on the subjects and dumb when questioned on Jaffna history. Although there is no entrance fee, the staff at the door point towards a till when exiting and block you until you drop in at least 1 yellow note. Disgusting attitude by the administrators.

There are a lot of things that talk of the history. You need to visit this place to see the collection. Need a lot of work in the field of preservation. The museum building is in a terrible state. The roof is leaking to the artifacts.

This place is a hidden gem if you are interested in history and archaeology. Its also a good place to get out of the hot mid-day sun!
The collection is eclectic and not very well displayed. But there is a very friendly staff person who shows you around and while she does rather rush you through the different sections, you can also ask her to slow down and allow you to linger (we asked and she complied).
There are many interesting artefacts and also some very random ones (boomerangs from australia, polynesian knick-knacks!) so keep your expectations low and you will have fun!

This museum is tucked away on a side street and looks run down but is well worth the visit. Lots of ancient interesting artefacts that give a great insight into the history and culture of this area of the Sri Lanka. The guide at the museum was very helpful. Highly recommend a visit!

This is one of the worst museums I've ever visited. Just a collection or artefacts with a perfunctory label and absolutely no descriptions anywhere in the museum. There's a free guide of sorts, where you get lots of useless information like, statue, sword, box etc.

Enjoyed looking at the collection however there was little or no detail on each artefact . If there was detail it was simply the date found or donated . I would have liked more description . Also the guide was less than enthusiastic and just seemed to want to hurry us along to the next room. As mentioned in previous comments he tried to grab our money when leaving a donation but we firmly said no and put the money in the front of the box. To be honest I wouldn’t recommend this place unless you just need a place to pass time. More of a collection than a museum.
