Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Nice temple. Looks really good inside but you do not need to go to see the actual relict, the tooth, because you will only see a box... nobody knows it's really inside. Be careful about the guides. They start guiding you without being ask and never tell you how much they want. You can look at everything yourself. You do... More

I dont know why but this temple still evokes me comparison with the grand palace in Bangkok. I apreciate that they are two different establishments however their importance for the local budhist culture is indisputable. It is definitely one of the main reasons why anyone travelling around Sri lanka should visit Kandy. Unlike the Grand palace the temple of the... More

We went there during evening hours and the temple was crowded. Please note you have to pay an entrance fee (how much depends whether you are a local or a foreigner) to see the temple and you have to leave your shoes before you enter for a small fee. This temple is one of the most sacred in Sri Lanka... More

We were taken there after the Kandy Dance performance. There were a lot of people and it was getting darker. A guide took us in but he was rushing and talking quite fast. Well, we managed to complete the tour probably within 1 hour or less. Nice and grand architecture (a UNESCO site). Reminder: You may have to prepare a... More

As part of our visit to Kandy we went to the Temple for a tour with our guide. The tour was interesting and the temple is certainly a fascinating place. I'd advise that you don't rush too quick through the tour. Our guide had us in and out in less than an hour. Also, be prepared for crowds. Remember that... More

Good to see when there is a service performed there. It is becoming overcrowded but is interesting. Please note that shorts and sleavless tops are not allowed so take a scarf with you.

This was included as part of our tour and not to go would have caused offence, so sensitivity kicked in. Other reviews have covered this more eloquently than I can so I won't try. Be warned quite a few steps and stairs so anyone with mobility issues be aware. It is a well preserved temple so if in Kandy do... More

We spend around 2.5 hours with our guide at the temple. The site is quite exceptional. There is mythological, ancient, Sri Lankan royalty, colonial and modern history here. It's worth making an effort. There is a taped guide but I didn't see many using it. We arrived in the morning to the sounds of the temple drummers and lined up... More

I visited with a friend from my hostel for a nighttime viewing of what is said to be one of Buddha's teeth. We joined hoards of locals hoping to catch a glimpse of the allusive sacred tooth. Alas, a close up view was reserved for the pilgrims who had arrived hours before us. Make sure to dress modestly (no shorts)... More

This was a very interesting visit and provided a good history of buddhism via art and statues etc. There were a variety of museums and temples on site. I would recommend a guide. It gets very busy upstairs so be prepared!
