Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

The temple itself isn't spectacular as far as temples go, however, the feeling inside is lovely. It's one of the places most sacred to Buddhists - it feels incredibly peaceful and spiritual as someone who's not religious. Our driver took us through and brought flowers to offer inside (hot tip - don't smell the flowers before you offer them). You... More

Ok temple Lot of emphasis on the Buddha tooth which is locked in a casket 3 floors up in a purpose built stronghold A self appointed tour guide at the ticket box insisted he take us on an unbooked official tour. He was knowledgeable and explained a lot about the temple. Paid him an unofficial 1000 r for his time.... More

I went at night when I finished my day and found surprisingly that the ticket was 1500 sri Lankan rupees, like 10 dollars! I payed with the hope to have a nice visit and though the temple is nice, there is no information provided not even a leaflet or a map. The teeth cannot be seen unless you have the... More

While I understand this temple is sacred to Buddhists. I can't help but feel sorry for the daily worshippers who have to bare the vast amount of tourists coming in and stepping over everyone! I was also very disappointed with how little there was to see in the temple, there is a mere 3-4 rooms to explore and a small... More

this is a religious experience and not just a temple tour. There are many worshippers all of the time and we felt that we were intruding on their experience. Much better if you are Buddhists. Completely awesome though

What I appreciated most about this is that it's a functioning temple, so you can appreciate the artwork of the temple (for want of a better term) in situ. Many of the architectural elements were familiar from the odd museum exhibit elsewhere, but here they're all in situ. We didn't get a guide, but that might have been a good... More

The Tooth Temple is an interesting visit any time of the day. The morning and evening seremnies give the visit a more lively tone. There are worhippers in the temple throughout the day. I recommend a guide (we payed 1000 rsd) as the audioguide was not working. You will get more out of the visit. Remember the monastary and other... More

Went at morning prayer time with hundreds of locals and plenty of tourists. Saw the temple in all it's amazing glory. So much cultural and religious energy. Kids were amazed.

One of the most sacred places for Buddhists in the world, a must visit while in kandy and in Sri lanka may be a bit caotic during the ceremony days, the best is to visit during week day
