Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Fun activity in Kandy

Really nice and interesting to walk around. Some beautiful art and relics, and lovely buildings. Plenty of shade to hide in. Get ready to go bare-foot though

We came after the cultural dance show next door, and it was just when the 'tooth' viewing was opening at around 6.30pm. Crazy madness, pushing, shoving for a glimpse of where the 'tooth' is stored. Busy, hot but worth it.

My companions and I arrived ten minutes after the ceremony had started and after checking our shoes and entering the temple, the line to see the shrine where the tooth was housed was unbelievably long. We waited about 45 minutes in line before giving up (while there are ropes in place people just push themselves ahead of you). The temple... More

Paying for a guide made our visit to the temple of the Tooth much more interesting. His explanation of Buddhism & the importance of the tooth, & the temple as a whole was great. I think the management of the temple need to separate worshipping times from tourist times as there is an incredible crush during the 20-30 mins when... More

The prayers, the museum explain it all. Remember to cover yourself properly if you are wearing sleeveless shirt/top or mini/shorts.

Temple surroundings is quite beautiful and well maintained. Temple usually gets crowded due to loads of visitors and tourist. Its little commercialized. There is entry free charged. It worth visiting.

Worth a visit. Go there around 6:30pm and try to get upstairs quickly to see the relic. Pass the line/queue on the right hand. You won't get very close to the relic, but the view is still good from the background. If you are interested in culture and history I would recommend you to take a guide. We enjoyed to... More

Enjoyed the visit, beautiful temple and very important as protector of the tooth of Buddha. We went late in the day when the crowds were less, but still busy. Although we didn't ask for a guide someone began giving us a tour, which we didn't want. The tip expected is quite high so it's worth saying quickly if you just... More

While we found the Temple of the Tooth interesting we thought it could be organised much better. We were there early in the morning but it was already crowded and people were pushing and shoving to try and get inside. It was also very hot and also did not like taking our shoes off as it was very dirty. We... More
