Once it was a palace, now that palace so proudly holds the scared tooth relic of load Buddha.Be mindful, whenever you visit the temple, you must dressed accordingly otherwise security would not allow to go in. Dress code is long fully covered white dress. Don’t wear caps, hats. Weekend and Poya days are crowded. Within the temple, there are museums, bookstores and souvenir shops can be found.

Travelers should know that there is no separate access to the Royal Palace and National Museum. One must go through the Temple of the Tooth, which charges a hefty fee to foreigners. The main hitch is the requirement to take off shoes. Now that it is monsoon season, the area is muddy, slippery, and no doubt unsanitary. Measures should be taken by authorities to provide access to the museums without going through the temple complex. It was a big disappointment not to get to see these palaces.

The site has been the seat of royalty for 457 years. The first palace was built approx 1357AD and modified by successive monarchs until its destruction by the Portuguese. The present building dates to 1634, other buildings within the complex were added by various monarchs during the period 1634 - 1814. It is situated north of the Temple of the Tooth and beside the lake. Historic building with lovely architectural features of the period.

A beautiful old building of historical significance with some grand interiors and pleasant grounds situated in a dominant position beside the lake which incorporates the Temple of the Tooth. Worth a visit but nothing special.
