Still standing after nearly a thousand years or more. The moonstones speaks volumes on their own! The statues are incredible. Of course they could have been maintained better but glad there is still some remains left of the ancient Polonaruwa Dynasty. Evidence that it must have been a very rich monarchy all those centuries ago ! Definitely worth a visit if in the region.

The round Buddha temple is still standing even after almost a thousand years.
This temple could possibly have been used exclusively by the royal family.
The Buddha statues facing the cardinal directions glimmer even in the dark.
The paintings are long gone and the ornate walls have become bare but the charm and quiet of the vihara endure.
The moonstone depicting the various phases of human life is exquisitely carved in granite.

Located in the Royal Complex, A must visit while you are in Pulanaruva, Sri Lanka.

The history says this site is an ancient tooth relic shrine of Buddha ? All I know is that it is a fabulous survivor of days long gone. The site still holds religious tenets and all are required to remove their shoes to enter. While I found the ruins to be pretty special , the vibe was lowered by the multitude of touts trying to sell tourist items ! Very annoying and detracts from the ancient city feeling !!

This is one of the most preserved ruins from the Polonnaruwa Kindom, built since 12th century. It is believed to be a sacred site that hold the relic of Buddha. Vatadage is a Buddhist structure typically built in Sri Lanka during the ancient times to enshrine the relic of Buddha with circular shape and built of stone or bricks with elaborated stone carvings. The architecture is believed to have influence of Hinduism culture. We particularly love the carvings at the entrance of the staircase and the well-known moon stone carvings at the foot of the first flight of step which usually made at a Buddhist architecture. Remarkable masterpiece in the ancient world of Polonnaruwa!

Interesting but by this time we were suffering from ruins overkill!
Quite busy, there were quite a number of people selling tacky souvenirs which we avoided.

Some very different structures to explore here and a fascinating history. Glad I visited and was pretty well free of other tourists in late afternoon (most tours visit here in the morning).
