Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I really don't like strongly bad reviews but I don't want to allow other visitors to Sigiryia fall into this tourist trap. We have an overpriced lunch at the restaurant upstairs, (which to be fair was tasty Sri Lankan buffet and beautiful views). We then were herded down to the wood carving shop where we were followed around the store by salesmen trying to push everything from smal souvenirs to tables. Had intended buying a small elephant anyway so I bought it here, but have since seen multiple times for 40% of the price I bought it for.
Just as we were leaving they made one last ditch attempt at my wife to come and see some natural painting techniques. All in all very uncomfortable at the time, and since quite annoyed knowing what a curry and wood carved elephant should cost. I advise you to avoid.

We first got a demonstration of the types of wood and how they color their items. The salesperson then went around the store with another person. We saw things that we have seen in small shops and stalls... with the same packaging at x8 price. If they are such a respectable store, they shouldn't be selling kitch at exorbitant prices. He wouldn't even admit that there were statues that clearly came from a mold and were real wood.

We visited Oakray Woodcarvings in Kandy, Sri Lanka (not in Sigiriya). The amount of furniture, large and small woodcarvings, etc was overwhelming. But we did love and buy a small coffee table which has elephants holding the round top which has lions and lotus flowers all natural colors. The price including shipping seemed reasonable to us. Nickson, the store manager, took time to explain the shipping process and that we would have to pick it up at the loading dock in Seattle. We were thrilled when it was delivered to our front door in Portland, OR in great condition! Thank you. We also purchased at the store one of the natural colored masks. The price was less than what I saw at other local stores .

We like wood carving so we wanted to try but Nalinda suggested another one in Matale. Extremely expensive items with very bad quality. Staff was extremely forcing for something to buy; that's crazy!. There's no real craftsmanship; just a touristic showroom. They need to be very simple and authentic if they want more sales.

A normal shop which offers lots of art piceses made of wood carving. Be careful as they may lure you to buy at high prices.

The shop and showroom are both interesting, but probably only if you reallly like wooden items. Interesting presentation of the woods used in carving and natural dyes. The wooden items in the showroom are OK, but nothing exceptional. Much better wood carvings in other places, including in Thailand and Indonesia.

Excellent products with good prices. The staff is excellent as well. Cannot leave Srilanka without buying a souvenir from there.

It was a nice experience but the prices are very big even for Europe. Yes it is wood and it is handmade, but is just too much!

The staff there single you out and lull you into a false sense of confidence by showing you their "skills and techniques" and how they use natural pigments from plants to paint over their works of Art. If you fall into the trap by buying anything then once you part with your money that is the last time you will be given any after sales service. I bought a coffee table eight months ago for £1500 and within 3 months it cracked along its entire length but the management haven't bothered to respond to any of my emails. I have no other recourse except TripAdvisor.
