About
Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It has an interesting history closely related to that of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you about two hours. There is far less to see on this site than Sigiriya
Duration: 2-3 hours

"A Spectacular Hike amidst Lush Greenery"
I had the privilege of hiking to the top of Pidurangala Rock, and I can confidently say that it was an unforgettable experience. The hike itself is both exhilarating and rewarding.. As you ascend, you'll be surrounded by the lush, vibrant greenery of Sri Lanka's countryside. Pidurangala Rock has an elevation of approximately 340 meters (1,115 feet) above sea level. As for the number of steps, there are around 500 steep and uneven steps that you'll need to climb to reach the summit. You start by passing through a temple, so need to remove shoes and cover knees and shoulders for 1st 100m. The entrance fees much lower than other places. It’s about $2.75 per person. The place has no toilet facilities. Early morning or late afternoon climb is advisable. 5.30am to 7pm it’s open for visitors. But, if you don’t have drive, try to climb down before too dark because tuk tuk is very expensive at night. The climb can be challenging, but the breathtaking views from the top make it well worth the effort. Upon reaching the summit, I was met with a panoramic view that left me in awe. The 360-degree vista includes the iconic Sigiriya Rock in the foreground and stretches out to the distant horizon, showcasing the beauty of the region. Watching the sunrise or sunset from Pidurangala Rock is a memory that will stay with you forever. Whether you're an avid hiker or simply seeking a nature-filled adventure, Pidurangala Rock is an absolute must-visit. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this gem in Sri Lanka; it's a true testament to the wonders of Mother Nature. Happy hiking!

Difficult roads lead to amazing places
The climb is long and tiring, but the view that greets you when you finally reach the top is worth everything. The summit is very windy, be sure to carry appropriate clothing. Sports shoes must be worn

    Fantastic view
You have to pay to climb but only $3 ( the other rock is $30) in a way this one is better as you have the view of Sigiriya Lion Rock, but there is no ruins at the top. Bit of a climb mainly stairs .. the top part is a bit of a scramble. I wouldn’t advise in the rain We went at sunset there is a great view . Our driver / guide came up with us and I was glad he did . If you are a bit unfit you can do it .. just take slowly and stop to rest . It’s worth it

Thrilling adventure for best sunset view
The day we reached SriLanka, we headed for Sigiriya where we trekked the Pidurangala rock to get the sunset view. It took ~45 min to climb the rock, including adequate rests. There are stone made steps throughout the journey. Some bhramhi inscriptions, inclined Buddha statue can be seen on the way. It used to be very early settlement of Buddhist monks. Last 50 -100 m climbing was very challenging with no defined steps and almost vertical/ steep climbing on rocks ! But the view from the top was worth taking the risk. Recommend to use sport shoes, light wear and bagpack. Carry water. Try to return as soon as the Sun set, since it becomes difficult to walk in low light condition.

Ok climb, with very steep scary section at the end!
We visited on an overcast day to climb the rock, having read that this rock gave a good view over the main Lion’s Rock that people flock to Sigiriya to climb. The rock was a lot cheaper to climb that it’s neighbour and offered good views from the top. The majority of the climb was ok, mainly with stone steps, however the last 10m (5 mins or so) were very much “off roading” with a moment where you need to pull yourself up an almost sheer sheet of rock with a rope. Safe to say I bailed out on seeing this and left my partner to climb to the summit where the view of the other rock was. He reported that this last bit of the climb was treacherous and that people were being helped by guides and other more experienced climbers to get up and down. As it was slightly damp when we climbed this made it a bit more of a tricky ascent, and we were offered a guide by the ticket office, which we think wouldn’t have been needed, until the last section mentioned above. But people were helping each other out here as it seemed dangerous - regardless of if you had a guide or not. The views from the platform I stopped at (just prior to the peak with the laying Buddha) were nice, but you couldn’t see the Lion’s Rock. Ladies need to have knees covered as there is a temple on the way up! You can borrow a cover from the ticket office for your ascent. Overall, it was an ok experience, but not as easy as made out online and in the Lonely Planet, but by all accounts did give a great view of Lion’s Rock from the top.

A spectacular viewpoint for those that don’t mind a short but adventurous hike
We paid 1,000LKR at the entrance and went up without a guide. It’s up irregular rock steps until the last 50m or so when it becomes a tough bouldering challenge. We made it to the top and were rewarded by an incredible 360deg vista. Even if you decide not to go to the very top, it’s still worth going as far as the reclining Buddha. Not as commercial or busy as climbing Sigaria Rock and the benefit of seeing that landmark at eye level. Wear good walking shoes and clothes suitable for bouldering. We loved it.

Fantastic views of Lion Rock and the surrounding vista
A decent climb up a lot of steps initially followed by some bouldering at the end made the views all the more rewarding when we reached the top for sunrise. A local chap was guiding people how to scramble over the final rocks to reach the top, which then allowed everyone to copy. There was even a couple of wild dogs and monkeys at the top! Beautiful views of Lion Rock. Well worth the effort of getting up at 4.45am to meet the tuktuk driver who drove us there - felt safer with him because he’d have known what to do if we came across an elephant which apparently is not unheard of at this time of day🐘

Climb for the sunrise, look at Sigiriya and then climb Sigiriya
Definitely the rock to climb first when around Sigiriya. Wake up early, do the climb for the sunrise, take wonderful pictures of Sigiriya rock, enjoy the view then go down and move to climb Sigiriya itself. Climbing Pidurangala is easy, there are some stairs , a very small element of scrambling , but nothing that an average person would not be able to do. It will take you 45 minutes to climb it from the start of the trekking path at good pacing. The view to Sigiriya breath-taking! Going early for the sunrise gives enough time to go down and then move to Sigiriya before the heath and the massive tourist crowds.

    Sunsets and Budget-Friendly Views
Sunset seekers, look no further than Pidurangala Rock! This climb might be challenging, but trust me, the reward is absolutely worth the effort. Unlike Sigiriya's Lion Rock, Pidurangala offers a breathtaking panoramic view with Sigiriya itself as the centerpiece. Imagine watching the fiery hues of sunset paint the sky while this majestic rock formation stands tall in front of you. For adventurers on a budget, the entrance fee is just 1,000 LKR for tourists (free for locals), making it an even more attractive option. Don't miss out on this unforgettable experience!

Achievable! (overweight & 48, + 69 yo, with no help)! Worth it!
We started out at 6 am, which means that we missed sunrise, however that also meant that we missed the crowds (LOTS of young people were coming down then) and we actually had the entire top to ourselves almost the whole time we were up there, and daylight, and daylight for the tuk there, and nice light and still not too hot. It is currently 1000lkr for entry. The steps are rocky, steep and uneven. It is a bit tougher than Sigiriya. Took us about 40 mins to get up (including lots of photo stops, and a couple of puffing spots). The last bit does involve “bouldering” for a short section (5 mins). But as I said, very achievable even for us, and no guide, or pushing/pulling required. Take your time, take care (you would NOT want to get injured up here) Great views of Sigiriya rock and surrounding plains. Worth it! Wear decent shoes Take care descending

The view from the top is absolutely amazing, on a clear day you can see the mountains that boarder Sigiriya and you have a beautiful view of Sigiriya rock itself! The climb to the top is rather tricky, it starts with a short walk through a temple (make sure you have your shoulders and knees covered, if not you can rent a sarong) followed by a few uneven cobble stone steps. Next, you have to climb over boulders. It is quite dangerous and whist we were clambering, someone fell and grazed their head, arms and leg. We also made the mistake of going up just before sunset and on a Poya day - making it extra busy. There was a large crush with an every man for themselves scenario making it even more dangerous. It was the same scenario on the way down. Pidurangala costs 500LKR (2.80USD) per person in comparison to Sigiriya Rock which costs 5,450LKR (30USD) per person. I would definitely recommend because the view was incredible and the price is so low however I wouldn’t recommend taking young children or climbing if you’re unable to clamber over boulders

I can see all the good reviews and It’s a great view up the top. But the organisation need to do something to get the path right at the last 10 mins to the top. It’s dangerous and not easy to climb. Saw some poor old folks struggling. Just matter of time somebody get injured. They need to put a short bridge in one section as a missed step you could fallen off. And railing to assist in ascent n descent. Collect 500 rupees but not giving the safety is a total let down whoever collecting the tickets.

Our trip designer (see Travel with Rana in Sri Lanka) recommended this adventure instead of climbing to Sigiriya Rock because the entrance ticket to Sigiriya Rock is 25 $ and to Pidurangala Rock it was only 350 Rs and it will be less crowded and we will get also a benefit "the best view of Sigiriya Rock... He climbed with us and we could enjoy the amazing view from the top, meditate and relax there. Do not worry to climb with children as well ;-) (it took only around 70 - 80 min to climb on the top but we took photos on the way). We were very thankful for this trip to our trip designer.

Meh. One of our friends agreed to meet us in Sri Lanka and after very limited research he said all he knew about the country was there was a giant rock. Its a beautiful place with expansive views of the jungle below and the Sigiriya rock. Watching the sunrise was a lovely experience.
There was a huge traffic jam of people on the way up. Probably due to people wearing instagramable shoes and not rock scrambling shoes!! We heard so many conflicting accounts of time that it takes and I think the people in front of you play the biggest factor. We read all sorts of timings; 20 mins to 2 hours for the hike. We asked our homestay to book Tuk tuks for 5 am and the timing works out perfect. Leaving the ticket booth at 5:30am in high season it took us about 30-40 mins.
We enjoyed the hike, took some pics and then returned to our homestay for a breakfast and nap.
If you have the time then enjoy Sigariya but I don't know if its worth the hype. There are so many other beautiful and fun activities in Sri Lanka to do.

We can highly recommend climbing the Pidurangala Rock after having climbed Lion's Rock. From the summit there's a phenomenal view of the area and Lion's Rock. The trail to the summit is relatively easy, but consider hiring a guide for the trip. If you do ask for Sunil who gave us a wonderful experience on the climb. Actually, climbing both rocks in Sigiriya should be mandatory :)

This steep hill near sigiriya is not as popular as it's neighbour Sigiriya fort.
The hill is very steep to climb, the path is strewn with boulders and there are no handrail or steps.
The entry fee of SLR 500 is rather steep.
The place has no toilet facilities available.
When it gets dark, there are no lights to assist the tourists to safely climb down the uneven path.

Having said that, once you are able to reach the top, literally on your hands and knees, the sunset is beautiful with the majestic Sigiriya fort visible to the south.

We can also see a partly damaged reclining Lord Buddha statue almost half way to the top.
The top of the hill is bereft of any structure or a Buddha vihara.

It is suggested that the hapless tourists may be spared the trouble of wearing uncomfortable clothes just to pass a new Buddha vihara located near the ticket office.

Instead, the management of the Vihara can consider putting up a screen before the door/pinnacle.

Given an option, one can always choose to climb the Sigiriya fort for its varied attractions.

Wear comfortable clothes and put on your climbing shoes before attempting to climb the hill.

Brush up your rock climbing skills also.

You need to be not only young at heart but also have a young body to climb this rather difficult hill.

Not recommended unless you have already visited Sigiriya fort and are physically very fit.

We'll worth a trip up Pidurangala to see sunset. Easy walk except where it gets a little dodgy on the final ascent where you have to pull yourself up some boulders. This is slightly more daunting on way back down but didn't see anyone struggle too much with it. Views at the top are amazing.of the jungle and Lions rock.

Tip - leave just as sun touches horizon to make sure you have enough light and beat the queues getting down that first tricky bit. We left at this point and still had about 40 people ahead of us (but we had light and got down just in time).

We climbed Pidurangala Rock on the advise of our driver with Indigo travel, he suggested coming here instead of Sigiriya Rock because he felt it was a better climb, it would be less crowded, less expensive and that yo also get the view of Sigiriya. He was definitely right and we were not left disappointed. The views from the top were amazing and the climb required some effort but more than manageable with moderate fitness. It took us about an hour in total and definitely bring water which can be bought at the shop at the bottom of the climb. You do have to take off your shoes and cover up for the temple part which is right at the start but can put them back on before going up.

There is very little at the base of the rock to see so you can start your climb straight away. Took about 1 hr to get up and 1 hr back down but if you stop for pictures like we did then you'll need more time. The path can be steep in places but is well formed of rock steps and dirt pathways.

The views are picturesque on the way up and we saw a huge variety of wildlife including dragon-fly, fish in a pond, butterflies, wasps nests and praying mantis!

The views at the top are spectacular. You can see for miles around and have a wonderful view of Sigirya's Lion Rock.

It is not busy at all and not touristy making it far more peaceful than Sigiriya and it's much cheaper for the ticket.

If you're in Sigiriya then this is a highly recommended must see and my most favourite place to visit in the area for sunset.

Entrance is much cheaper than at the Sigiriya Rock and you have a great view at the Sigiriya rock from the top. Last meters you have to climb a bit so dont wear flip flops or stuff like that.

Must See in Sri Lanka !
