Paharganj in new Delhi is a very very busy place as the New Delhi railway station is found there. you get foods everywhere near the railway station and there are many hotels in the neighbourhood. i went to drink fresh juice everyday in the main market near the railway station. it is a very big and busy tourist place. you can money changers and tourist shop along the main market. Every year when i go to Delhi i go for some shopping at paharganj.

I will never forget this place. There is beauty in every corner, walking down the main bazaar made me fall in love with India and then walking back to my hotel I fell in love all over again. It is beautiful, bustling and bright. I recommend this and if you are a shy person like me, get used to saying “No!”

Not a safe place for solo travellers. Very close to Red light district. You get harrased by Massage parlour Owners to come inside and at night rickshaw drivers keep insisting you to travel with them.

Good area to shop around. Ideal for fabrics, scarves, clothes, teas and household goods like tiffins. We got some great bargains and prices are all reasonable.
It is busy but not as crazy as old Delhi so we found it okay to navigate around.

My favorite place to stay in Delhi, it's got the life and excitement which young people are looking for. Incense and dust fill the air, the songs of Bollywood drift out of shops The main street is full of people hawking everything from teddy bears to cannabis. It's kind of crazy, now and again an elephant will be guided through, young pickpockets no older than 8 years will have a go at your trouser pockets, at night packs of dogs take over and terrorize the fearful, at other times fist fights break out. You will be harrassed constantly by rickshaw drivers. I even saw a dead man lying in the street while a group of children played a couple of feet away.
There is another side of Paharganj though, walk away from the main street and you enter another world, quiet alleyways in a timeless India where you could hear a pin drop. Small temples where you can be blessed for a couple of rupees, people frying food and offering chai, a random cow, an alleyway which is a small vegetable market, abandoned kittens play beside a saucer of milk, running children with the biggest smiles. Nothing more than a series of captivating contrasts.
Thats the thing about Paharganj, it could never be boring.

It was the month of January 2012. Me with my newly wedded wife moved for Newdelhi and rajasthan for our honeymoon. After reaching at Newdelhi, as I have booked my hotels and taxi long days back, I was taken to the Hotel "Hotel Welcome Palace" at paharganj in New delhi. The 1st day was good. and teh 2nd day was also good with most tourist places visits. At night of teh 2nd day, as i had to withdraw some cash from ATM, i was on my way to the ATM alone on the footpath. A 12yr boy suddenly came and without my reason hold my legs begging sorry. Suddenly he left my legs and ran away. Few minutes later I found that I Money purse was not with me. It had a total cash of 8000 INR and my PAN card and 2 credit cards and 2 debit cards. All are gone. I called up my driver and both of us searched for that guy and asked also to the police standing nearby. The police says its a regular practice happens here. So, you should have careful before.
Being harrashed not getting that boy, i was returning back to my hotel room to block those cards. Suddenly i saw that with the same style the same boy was trying to stole a foreigner. I catched him up and after some fights got my purse. The purse was only with cards, no cash. I called up the police and handedover that boy and another boy with him to the police. I also along with the police men moved to the police station. After the application of 3rd-degree torture by the police men the Cash came out from that boy's Jacket with only 6000 INR and Brown sugar packets worth 2000INR. This proves that these boys are truly drug addicts.
Now started the play of the original thief of delhi. The Delhi Police. They didn't handed over me the Purse and the cash (I got the cards before teh police came). Asked me to file a Juvennile case as those two boys are only 12 and after I will win the case will get the money and purse. Just imagine, being a tourist coming from about 2800 KMS to new Delhi, can i cameback again for the case or even can I stay there till teh case ends. But when I argue with teh police the police used to threatened me that I will be punished that I have wasted the time of the police personnels. And atlast after a long discussion it was about midnight 3.30 since evening 7.30, The police released me from all formalities, but obviously without my purse.
Till the date in last 5 months I didn't heard about the case. Now you can easily understand what the police's intension was . Obviously to grab the money and they must had a great party with that money. Truly in delhi the Pahadgand area is an area of thiefs. The real theirfs aswell as the Police as the thiefs.
My dear friends, if you want to go to delhi for touring purposes, then please be careful of the lonely streets and also waling lonely. Always move in a group of 2/3 persons. And just avoid the police in anycase.
Better if possible avoid going to pahadgand area for hotels. Try looking for any other hotel in some other place.
Want to know more about my experience or want some tips from me, please email me back at - asktusar@gmail.com.
If anyone from delhi, can help me to know about the case, I can provide you the cell number of that police Inspector and his name also the date of the happen.
Thanks
Tusar

I have stayed here many times for the convenience. But I have truly had enough of the cheating and so much disrespect for western women. I can't walk out on the street without at least one man trying to get me to drink, which means having sex. Even though I tell them I have a husband, am Muslim and dress modestly. I have had workers do this when they come for room service. I have even been grabbed on my chest. Next time I fight back and then call police. I have been offered drugs so many times. The cheating is out of control. There is a few exceptional hotels, from cheap to expensive, but they are always booked out because they get return visitors. This is the last time I will stay here.

If your idea of traveling in India involves staying in 4 & 5 star hotels and eating in fancy restaurants rather than from street vendors then Paharganj is probably not the place for you. It's crowded, noisy, smelly, chaotic and just a little bit dodgy. That and the fact that it's very cheap are why I love it.
Essentially it's a long dusty street crowded with vendors of all types, restaurants & food stalls, lots of cheap accommodation and a few bars. Out of all the places I've visited across northern India (I've never been south - yet), Paharganj & immediate surrounds best represented the slightly chaotic beauty of urban India.
I stayed in Paharganj on five separate occasions during my 2012 trip to India for a total of about 12 days. Each time I was enthralled and will be making it my first stop in India again this year even though I wasn't planning on going to Delhi this time around.
I traveled solo in India and never once had a problem or felt unsafe (other than on the roads) but I would suggest keeping your wits about you wherever you go and especially somewhere like Paharganj. Firstly you need to be aware of the prices your paying for things in shops. Don't blame the vendor if you get ripped off, it's your responsibility to be aware of what's going on. Secondly, be cautious of anyone who approaches you offering anything or just trying to 'be your friend'. As I said I did not have any major problems but there are pickpockets and fraudsters around who will be happy to relieve you of your possessions or $ and gullible western tourists are considered a bonanza.
The location of Paharganj is excellent for New Delhi sightseeing. The New Delhi railway station is located right at the end of the Main Bazaar and attractions such as the Red Fort, Kashmir Gate, Chandni Chowk, India Gate etc are all within a cheap rickshaw ride or half hour to hour walk.
The bars were a little overpriced by Indian standards but I still spent plenty of time washing down the tasty food with plenty of Kingfishers.
If you visit India and don't eat food from the street vendors then you have not really visited India. There's always a risk but I ate from street vendors every day for 2 months in India and never once got sick. It may have helped that I only ate veg. The street vendors in Paharganj may not have been to quite the same standard as some I experienced in the Punjab but I was still pleasantly surprised on a few occasions by the quality and taste.
I've dragged on about this but I was really enamored by Paharganj & New Delhi in general & recommend it as an essential stop on any backpack tour of this magnificent country.

Pahar ganj receives a lot of bad press from people who view it as a bad introduction to India , but having stayed there many times i find it exhilarating . The practicalities are that it close by New Delhi Railway station ,so good for transport , there are numerous hotels ,some bad but a surprising amount good value for your money if you do not like the one you are in , move next door plenty of choices . It used to be described as a back packers area but more Indians are now staying in the area due to its low cost and transport links , all in all a good introduction to India . Enjoy .
