Had been to this famous art gallery in Fort a few weeks ago. It is visited by locals and foreign tourists.
Established in 1952, this art gallery is managed by the Committee of Management and was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir. It presents exhibitions, conducts regular lectures, workshops and discussions on various forms of art. This art gallery has 4 exhibition halls. It is well maintained and entry is free.
This art gallery is open from 11 am to 7 pm everyday. Photography is allowed is some places and not allowed in other places. Inside the gallery is a bust of Sir Cowasji Jehangir. Outside the gallery, there are paintings on the pavement displayed for sale. Had roamed inside the entire gallery and admired the beautiful paintings & photographs created by various artists. However, it was crowded during the Kala Ghoda festival.
This art gallery is an ideal place for families, school children as well as art lovers. It is a must visit and should not be missed.

Good venue for upcoming artitsts. The exhibits we chanced on were very varied. The main floor big gallery had the more professional ones. Main hall ideal for large scale works including sculptures.

The Jehangir Art Gallery is the most famous art gallery in Mumbai and it is very difficult to get a booking for displaying your work here, sometimes the waiting list is about two years!!! There are two main halls for displaying your art work here and there is a lovely restaurant called Samovar which is an artist's meeting point as well. It lies in the art district of Mumbai with the National Gallery of Modern Art just across the road and the Museum Art Gallery just behind it. There is an art plaza just outside on the sidewalks as well which can be rented out by artists who cannot afford the Jehangir Gallery to display their art.

Jehangir Art Gallery: Visit this gallery for a taste of modern Indian painting and sculpture, and when you tire of walking around, settle into the comfort of Cafe Samovar with a steaming cup of tea. This is Mumbais most prestigious art gallery, which exhibits artwork by well-known Indian artists. There is also the plaza outside, where artists sell their paintings and also take on commissions for work. Samovar is the popular cafe housed in the complex, and Indias oldest licensed antique dealers, Natesans, can be visited here.Timings: Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Jehangir Art Gallery is one of Mumbai's oldest art galleries. Located at the art district of Kala Ghoda.
The gallery has three spaces- for showcasing artworks. Two of them on the ground floor. Third one on the first floor (its called Hirji Gallery).
Usually about five exhibitions are held simultaneously.
Exhibitions change every week (mostly on mondays).
Getting to Kala Ghoda:
1) Nearest Railway stations are: Churchgate or VT (now called CST)
2) Nearest Landmark: Regal cinema (10 minutes walking from Regal)
Mumbai is well connected with trains/buses/taxis.

Art lover looking for a fix in Mumbai? Give this gallery a go. A few floors of exhibitions, make sure you go to the exhibition on -1 floor, you can buy pretty much everything in display.

We were looking for cafe samovar, a 50 year old historic icon of Bombay when we were visiting from US and were eagerly looking forward to seeing this classic cafe which had been a part of the Jehangir Art Gallery. If you don't know what it is, look up the movie Choti si Baat (Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha). This is the cafe where Amitabh and Jaya had their first date, not to mention various other legendary facts around it. However the cafe was gone and after some research we found out that the owner of the cafe, Usha Khanna had passed away a year after its closing and that Jehangir Art Gallery had wanted to expand their gallery and were fighting to close this iconic cafe for 3 decades. This is ironic because on one hand the gallery is supposed to preserve a heritage/art and on the other hand they worked to close down a very important part of history. We were not impressed and will never recommend this art gallery to anyone.
