Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Interesting, uniquely Indian experience. Well worth a visit to the viewing deck (on K K road). Go early in the morning to see the actual washing taking place. In the afternoon, you will just see all the clothes hanging out to dry (which is also an interesting sight). Free of charge, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Not a usual tourist spot but fascinating nonetheless and important to hear of this historic function still going on in modern day Mumbai.
Beware all the street hawkers, especially the numerous small children to tug at your heart strings...

In 2023, it was fascinating to see how people take in laundry, wash it on stones, and press and return it to customers. It’s sad that in this day and age people still have to labor like this, but we saw this all throughout India that jobs that are mechanized in fully developed countries are still done by hand in developing countries. Children who saw this were very surprised, and for all of us, we took back home a feeling of just how fortunate we are.

Seeing this incredible outdoor laundry had a big impact on all of us. It's size, history, and importance as a local service and job provider is something to see.

I am a sucker for watching the local lives, so this was an interesting stop. It is an easy access from Mahalaxmi Station with a viewing gallery overlooking the Dhobi Ghat. There are a few vendors who would try to sell you things, but otherwise this is a quirky attraction for those who want to observe the world's largest open air laundry.

I especially wanted to see this operation - over 700 families are involved in this old and forever busy laundry. It provides an essential service and runs efficiently - there is a viewing area and provides great photo opportunities. Worth seeing just to see the scale and layout.

Chaos at first glance, then the organization takes shape. Colors, types of material, customer collections -- moving from the hand washing, drying and starching. Watch the workers scurry beneath the drying lines, adjusting, picking and folding. A hand laundry of unequaled size and variety.

We attended after a slum tour, it was middle of the day so perhaps the wrong time to visit but it is quite a spectacular sight to behold. You can smell the soap from the train,

Mind boggling sight - Mumbai’s unique outdoor laundry system is where chaos, color, activity and sounds mix together in a freakish blend. It’s a fascinating place where Mumbai's laundry gets done. Clothes are hand washed by hundreds of Dhobis (laundry men and women) on concrete sinks and hung on clotheslines.

For 18 to 20 hours each day, over 7,000 people flog, scrub, dye and bleach clothes on concrete wash pens, dry them on ropes, neatly press them and transport the garments to different parts of the city. Over 100,000 clothes are washed each day. The dhobis collect clothes from all corners of the city, with their biggest clients being neighborhood laundries, garment dealers, wedding decorators and caterers, and mid-sized hotels and clubs.

Dhobi Ghat, a 140 years old open-air laundromat, is such a marvel of Mumbai. Watching the clothes painstakingly hand washed by the laundrymen in endless rows of concrete troughs fitted with flogging stones, provides an unforgettable glimpse into the workings of the city and unlike anything you have ever seen. The highlight was the laundryman beat the clothes on the flogging stone.
