If you are looking to soak in the culture of Chennai, the Mylapore Tank and Mandavali area should be at the top of your list. One of the oldest residential parts of Chennai, the tank is a part of the seventh century Kapaleeshwarar Temple. This is also the place where the famous Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar, was born. If you are spending a few days in Chennai, you will understand the importance of this state figure from the number of references made in signs, names of shops and statues. The quintessential travel phrase, "overwhelming sights, sounds, smells," fits perfectly in this area. The narrow streets around the temple are buzzing with activities. Flower sellers, archaic shops selling temple offering ingredients and such line the roads leading to the temple. A photographer’s dream, this place is best explored in the morning, the chosen time to pay homage at the temple.

Big temple tank, Lord Shiva temple and Shirdi Sai Baba temple are few of iconic places apart from Sanskrit college. Many big shopping malls and Banks and corporates also present in this area.

Mylapore is a good place to source for prayer items. There are plenty of shops that offer a good variety of south indian Hindu prayer items from plates, to incense to books. There are also shops selling clothes and souvenirs. There are a few Ayurvedic shops where one can find cures for many illnesses.

This area is full of street vendors, small restaurants selling meals, tiffin items, temples and lot of schools. Known as habitat of Tamil Brahmins, it offers a contrasting view of Chennai - old traditional world mixed with latest trends

Mylapore is known for the renowned Kabaleeswarar temple which is more than 1000 years old. Besides this, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple, Ramar temple, Anjaneyar temple and so many other temples are there. Kabaleeswarar temple tank is huge and beautiful. There are so many shops around the temple and the tank - restaurants, jewellery, textiles, pooja items, dolls, vegetable shops etc.... More

A landmark temple in Mylapore. Have offered prayers many times at this beautiful temple with a very grand Gopuram. The temple complex is big complete with a large tank on the outside boundary. Temple street is studded with many traditional shops selling vessels, pan, flowers, coconuts etc. Can be very crowded on auspicious days.

Visited the temple in the morning. There are 2 options for payed darshan for quick visit of rs 50 and rs 100 available from counter inside temple. There is also a shoe counter to safely keep footwear outside ran by the temple. Don't go to local vendors for that.
