About
An interest in foreign-made goodies started the formerly popular market Burma Bazaar, a treasure house for DVDs, perfumes and tech products. Though the market is lackluster now, it still makes for a good walk to see if you might find something interesting from across the borders.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: George Town/Parry’s Corner
George Town is one of the busiest and most commercial neighbourhoods of Chennai. It may not boast of pubs or restaurants, but it surely offers something that the rest of Chennai can’t - a strong whiff of history. This historical area located in north Chennai is where the city of Madras was officially born in 1640 alongside Fort St. George. A walk here leads you to the well-established specialised bazaars and wholesale markets selling everything under the sun: fabrics, fruits, vegetables, spices, fabrics, camera, perfumes, jewellery, etc. Home to the High Court and other State institutions and famous for a large resident Sindhi and Marwari community, George Town is a rich congregation of shrines of different faiths within its boundaries – from Hindu and Jain temples to churches, mosques and synagogue. If you are craving some authentic North Indian food, head to streets of Sowcarpet for chaat, vada pav and other popular street snacks.
How to get there

When you need to buy certain items cheapest, then your search will lead and end in Burma Bazaar which is close to Beach station. You should avoid brokers and visit the shop directly to get best deals. Be careful and check the items more than once as it don't carry any warranty most of the times.

1st i gone with my dad on 1999, but it's now totally changed,
my advice......
1). if u want to buy something in their, pls don't go alone,
2). take some friends, about 1+2 enough,
3). don't choose crowded shop & don't bring expensive items with u (Like bags chain, ring even iphone) ,because pickpockets everywhere,
4). before u go in their - **u need to decide 100% what do u want their**,
5). if u need just want to side scene of shops don't go threw the shops way, just use road ways and watch
6). if u didn't find ur products in their, they won't leave u - just say ** i can check other shop and return again**
7). don't buy expensive items, plan ur rate plan below 2000
8). u can buy travel bags and suitcase, i buy many travel bags to my friends, one of the shop have tailor them-self, if the bag damaged before 6 month, they can repair
9). also good with Imported toys, nice place to buy toys for ur kids, (But u need to check twice)
10). I don't think it was good place to buy DVD and Mobiles, most of shop have stolen mobiles or repair - if u really need one - just search OLX and buy it
Example : my friend said , need to buy Xperia x10, but he didn't find one so he buy Xperia text pro, rate was 1500 Rs, but no charger, bad panel condition, charge=600Rs, panel=800Rs,
So 1500+600+800=2900 Rs - U can find this phone in OLX 3000 with Whole Kid
11). Oh yes the DVD - u don't buy one even it was 10Rs .........
12). 70% shop was Cheater, but the other 30% was good shops, if u find a good product and think good shop, don't forget to get visiting card of that shop, he can help u find other good shops - like Repair ur mobile and spares like Battery,Panel,Charger with low cast
13). every one's problem was identifying a shop, here's a advice, don't just buy and go, look the oposite land mark building and lets pretend u standing on a shop, ** u need to remember left side 2 shops, right side 2 shops
Examble : (( DVD shop - Mobile Shop - Your Shop - Toy shop - Mobile shop)) this could help 90%
14). if u visit 2 or 3 times - u can understand how to identify easily
Thank u for Reading..............
as i said, it was Cheap & best, but Be careful.............

Yrs ago Burma bazaar used to sell a lots imported and custom caught products like scents, Watches, Electronic Items, Sports items, and so on.
But now the shops there sell second hand electronic items like cell phones. Refurbished stereos. Stolen cell phones, parts and other electronic items.
They also sell Cigarettes, old scents and lighters.
Now most of the shops mainly sell Second hard and Korean cell phones and Pirated Movie DVD.
But there are still imported items available.

Pros -
1. Hub for Imported items.
2. Movie DVD of all kinds and all languages available at very cheap cost.
3. Cell phones at low cost. (but hav to buy at ur own risk).
4. Korean mobile sets available at lowest costs.
5. Most kids of Electronic Items like cordless phones, DVD players, Music systems, LCDs and computer peripherals.

Cons -
1. Anything u buy, u wont get guarantee or warranty or Bill..
2. Any product u buy, u have to buy or ur own risk because the products would be second hand and even stolen..
3. The sellers are very rude and they sometimes behave very harshly when u dont buy their products. They pull hand to their shops voluntarily and make u buy the products. SO BEWARE..
4. there are some person who tries to sell u illegal products and DVDs. That might lead u to arrest. BEWARE AGAIN!!

Overall, if u have money and need a good product. Try avoiding this place..
If u know sells there, u can buy from there at very low cost.
Its all u risk...

When the import duty was high this place thrived with all sort of smuggled electronic goods / choclates & alcohol.

With import duty relaxed all they shop owners have turned to selling fake electronic goods / perfumes for cheap price / Pirated movie and porno CDs.

Shop owners keep calling you to visit thier shop, just ignore and keep walking. Dont have eye contact (Sun glass might help) that way they'll move on to pester the next guy. See all you want, if you touch they'll force you to buy it. Shops near the Beach railway stn might be saffer, worst case you can run into the stn or call the police.

Buy things only if you know someone in person there, some of these guys have direct contact with customs official and sell goods confiscated by customs. Risks are fake goods / No warranty. Not worth it .... at all.

Never go with your wife / girl friend / kid.

Nearest restroom : Paid one in Beach stn - Not a clean one, but there is one.
Food: Saravana Bhavan inside Beach stn is good.

Burma Bazaar is more popular among teenagers looking for cheap DVDs and CDs.

There are some shops which sell genuine stuffs, but most if them r fake. You buy a Rambo DVD taking it to be Rambo..but it will be either blank or something else...print quality us pathetic.. Call it your luck if it works out to be as told by the shopowner.

This place is avoidable and please don't go with your family or females.

Avoidable in all respects.

This bazaar is along the road side of Chennai beach station. There are so many small shops selling mobiles, tvs, audio, video, dvd players, camera, pen drives, electronic items, dress materials, perfumes, leather items, etc, etc at cheap price. Most items are Chinese made except few Malaysian, Singapore, Taiwan, Korean and Indonesia made. Bargain talent is required. If you get a good quality product, then you are lucky. The guys who are selling there really might not be knowing about the fake product qualities. So they may be cheating people knowingly or unknowingly.

This was once a great shopping paradise when import restrictions were there. Smuggled electronic goods of all type, perfumes, cameras, watches textiles mostly from singapore and dubai were available in sixties and seventies. Now it is a bazaar for selling fake products, some imported from china, taiwan and some locally made with foreign markings. Agents will be after you the moment they find a tourist from other states or abroad and if you ask for a certain item, they will make you stand there and disappear and will come back with the item which may mostly be a fake one. Once you are hooked then they will never allow you to move till you buy it. it is better you have a local person with you or you should be in a group. If you really want to buy an item you have to bargain from half the price. On the whole the market has lost all its charm of yester years.

Burma Bazar once used to be the place for people who are looking for cheap electronic items and imported perfumes, leather etc etc. You will get everything here. Located closed to Paris corner and parallel to the beach station rail line, it has many small shops all filled with anything you can imagine under the sun. One has to know how to bargain and get goods here. If you are a person who is not familiar with the place you will surely get cheated. Information spreads so fast that the shop owners know what you are looking for.. hand in glove... There is no guarantee that the products you buy, especially electronics will work or not. That is the price we pay for looking for cheap goods. There is also no guarantee that it is the brand you are looking for. Maybe fake too.... Just for fun, being an old landmark of Chennai one can visit this place. Place gains importance more from a heritage aspect and nothing more.
