About
This institution was established to resurrect the traditional dance forms of the country from adulteration by modern techniques, Kalakshetra has been around since 1936. Many subtle nuances existed in the making of this institution — a symbol of uprising against the British, commitment to theosophy and creation of a strong identity for Indian classical dance forms. The suburban institution offers events that are open to public. It also provides dance classes and a platform for research and studies about traditional Indian dances.

This is a 20 min drive from Chennai and a great place to visit. The grounds are beautiful to walk around.
You can go into the art class and the pottery class to View the students work as well as watch the amazing dancing as the students practice.
Get there for 8.30 to watch the morning prayers under the banyan tree.
Price 20 INR per person. Plenty of parking.

The work done to preserve traditional arts at this institution is commendable, and walking around, the atmosphere is inspiring. We tried to book a time where we were allowed to come in as visitors to look around, but it was really difficult to arrange, as evidently the school's intended only for the benefit of students. If the school's interested in educating more of the public about these arts, then making visits easier to arrange would be helpful. In the end, we just visited for five minutes without any previous arrangements, and we got to see the famous sights in the campus as they're close to the entrance.

We visited Kalakshetra in early August. Sadly, we went on an off day. However we managed to see some nice things, such as a big banyan tree and the performing stage.

Most of them has written about good. But there are few negatives of Kalakshretra.
1. Harassing the opposite sexuals.
2. Ragging
3. most of the students who are staying in hostel are drunkards
4. This institute is for Indian culture but the culture is not only dance, They are teaching dance but not indian culture.
I love India and indian culture. Please save it.

Only Indian are dominate the place . Foreign students are been threaten and badly given pressure by some teachers ,till some of them left the collage . Poor foreign students cant open their mouth due to mental pressure by teachers.
Their come here to learn the art and bring the culture to their country but some of the teacher are stop them from expend the culture to other country in the world. The past two years foreign student are very less compare the earlier years .
Hope the new director take over and look this matter seriously.

Kalakshetra is a cultural academy dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in Indian art, especially in the field of Bharatanatyam dance and Gandharvaveda music. The academy was founded in January 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale. Under Arundale's guidance the institution achieved national and international recognition for its unique style and perfection. In 1962, Kalakshetra moved to a new campus in Besant Nagar, Chennai, India, occupying 40 hectares (99 acres) of land. Those interested in dance and culture must visit this beautiful institute.

Studied dance in the seventies at Kalakshetra under Rukimini Arundale or Atthai as we all called her. Has a beautiful peaceful atmosphere under the banyan tree or gardens. Best place for cultural enlightment during the music and dance festivals during the month of December. You get some of the best artists, to see and learn from. A must visit place.
