About
This expansive beach is Chennai's most famous tourist attraction, though the undercurrent is too strong for all but the strongest swimmers. Look out for the "Kannagi" statue on Marina Beach, which tells the story of the legendary character from a South Indian epic.

- Tour575553616733 contributionsSmille placeGood place. Best view.should restrict the people from carrying plastics and other eatable items inside the beach area. The sea is highly polluted and unfit for bathing. This beach is dotted with many tourist places around and the best time to visit is in the evenings. It can be accessed from any parts of the Chennai city. Hotels/ Accommodation is available in Triplicane and Mylapore areas. Safety is a concern as the sea is rough, dirty and no protective gears if you are venturing into the sea for swimming. Very good place. - LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,634 contributionsLots to See and Do HereWe came here around noon on a hot, sunny day. There are stalls at the beach but very few were opened for business during or visit. The story might be different later in the afternoon where more of them would be open and there would be more customers. There are other attractions to visit here, statues to see and identify, temples to visit, etc.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 March 2024

Waves kissed the beach and people relished these touch their feet. Most of the people were just sitting by the side simply witnessing the waves come and subside back.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2024

Best breeze in the world .A place for relaxation and enjoy ment. The eateries are great. Smiling faces of the vendors and the mornings sun shine over the once British colonial building take you back in time.

That Marina Beach is among the finest beaches in India is well known. It has an easy approachability being in the Metro city of Chennai. It has a depth of space like no other. It also has a light house in vicinity for a breathtaking top view. What is more, it is clean and has ample parking around. But what distinguishes it is that there is no high end rampant commercialisation. It is very affordable to visit. And you see only commoners enjoying at the beach. A line up of public institutions, museums, statues and university adorns it. Truly, a Commoner's Paradise.

I went at 10:30am and was surprised to see the beach was empty. Even at 5:30pm, the snack sellers were just starting to come and getting out vegetables to cook. Policemen on horses were telling people not to go in the water as the waves were too high.

A long, unexciting beach. It is dirty in many places and not a place to swim due to rip-tides and dirt. The rubbish is more near the areas used by the fishermen where the dogs run free. At night don't stray from the well lit areas near the stalls which come alive but as rows of predictable offerings with little originality. Old fashioned fair ground rides are quaint but not the same ones time and again.

the beach is one of the longest in the world and offers great views of sunrise and the calm sea. there are various monuments of historical importance opposite the Marina Beach. There are various stalls offering street food. There is enough place for parking as well.

I never missed this iconic beach whenever I visited Chennai. Though overcrowded in the evenings, the energy, vibrant atmosphere, beach market is not to be missed. My favourite is quite sunrise and sip hot cup of coffee.

Marina Beach is a Chennai must see destination but after visiting the north end of the beach I felt deflated.
I didn't get to the lighthouse which I do think would be worth visiting so maybe start therr.
I started my wanders st Madras University grounds (stunning architecture), then took the pedestrian underpass to the north end of the beach. I strolled through the monument grounds (worth a look but it would be best with a guide), up to the bridge (with its unique stink of backwater and sewerage) and cut through the quiet memorial park to the beach. From there a walk across the grass flats to the sand.
As with Elliot's Beach, there is plenty to see but the plentiful garbage and for me the poor condition of some horses (possibly retired beach ponies) up the back made it a joyless visit. Have a look at my pics.
I tried to love this beach for it's uniqueness but couldn't. My review doesn't include the south part of Marina Beach near the Gandhi statue - maybe there is more joy to be found there.

Can I just pay for horse riding on the beach and nothing else? How much and where do I make booking?
Written 14 November 2018
There is no booking required for horse riding. Find the horse ride vendor at marina beach. And horse riding means it will not make you to ride a horse for longer distance. There may be a 500m approx for horse riding in marina beach

hi Nice info about Marina beach...
can we go to the top of light house to have a look of view of sea from the top

How far is the Marina Beach from central station ? How much will the auto hire from central station to Marina Beach?
Written 16 January 2018
The total distance is around 5 Kms. If you take an ola auto or prepaid auto outside the station they charge around 60 Rs. But the best way to reach will be to take the MRTS train. You can just come out of the central station , cross the street and go to park town station and from there you will get trains to tiruvallikeni or light house. From there you can walk to the beach. It will take around 10 to 15 mins only by train.
