I am an art lover and how come someone skip the Chola bronzes and you get to see some of the most exquisite pieces of that period. Dancing Nataraja, Kalyansunder, different saints, deity etc all casted painstakingly in bronze. Its just in the centre of city.

This museum is easily some of the most beautiful architecture in Chennai. There is a treasure trove of carvings, bronzes, old weapons and coins, but the museum is not well maintained, the staff is not knowledgable and they dont let you take photos (probablly so that guests dont realize the sorry state of this museum). This was originally built 100 years ago and I doubt Indian government put much time love nor care into it in the century thereafter. Entire exhibits are missing. During a rainy day its impossible to access some areas. Poor signage. Staff isnt knowledgable and is on their phones even though you cannot be. Truly an amazing historical collection from all over india, just Depressed / Angry at how little the TN / India Government cares about our heritage

Apart from the Chola bronzes, the rest was in a dreadful state of disrepair. Exhibits missing, lighting so dim it was hard to see the exhibits. A waste of time and money. We were told it was "maintained" by the Federal Government in Delhi, not the State Government. Such a structural masterpiece going to rack and ruin.

This museum could use many upgrades and some cleanup, painting or modernization, but it is so interesting and fantastic that it gets a “five” anyhow. I loved the historical sections, temple art, bronze sculptures. Amazing collection! It vividly reminds me of the old Cairo Museum in its wealth and value of the collection. Same quality just different continent.
Best if possible is to have a guide. The collection is huge and impossible for one day to digest.
On top of it all the old British buildings are pieces of architectural art themselves.

The museum is a large one with a large number of exhibits belonging to Botanical, Zoological, Geological and Historical. Many are stuffed and preserved and therefore not quite trendy and modern. Also scope for better maintenance.

The museum is an fantastic gothic building and stands out. The collection is quite fascinating. I spent the most time in Bronze statues. Don't miss the sections of bronze from Chola period. Quite a memorable visit.

Well..I am great fan of history, historical places and heritage buildings..for me this is awesome and never to be missed to visit..India's second biggest museum and it has everything in it..from kids to adults.. I really like those heritage old buildings and history behind it..

Full day is required in detailed visit of this place and half a day is fine to gaze around..

Worst part is its maintenance and cleanliness..seriously our next generation will not able to enjoy this place if it is maintained like this.. We don't understand the importance or the historical richness of these places..

We had spare time to spent in Chennai due to connecting train, so we visited this place. Its not far from Egmore Railway Station.

There are 5 pavilions to visit. The best part is for Children, which has a dolls museum replica.

The Library is also very vibrant.

Over all good place to visit if you have some spare time. You would not repent in case you miss this attraction of Chennai
