If you are looking for a change for your kids, this is an ideal spot to take them- lots of areas to run, different train models, toy train ride, model train, play areas.. Surprising this place is not well-known in Chennai..
Also, for train enthusiasts, there are many nostalgic train facts and artefacts which take you for a trio down the memory lane..
One suggestion though is cool drinks can be included given the hot weather during the day..

Thank you for your review, rating and suggestion. Cool drinks in tetra packs were not considered too safe, but however, we would look into other options.

Like the engine kept in the park. Well maintained museum. Kids enjoyed the Toy train raid. The authorities allowed 2 rounds of toy train rides. It also depicted the first inception of rail factory with different kinds of coaches. Had a great time there. And for adult tickets you get snacks as well. It is kind of small feel good gesture.

We got to see the Chennai Rail Museum during our visit to the Integral Coach Factory, ICF. The models and exhibits at the Railway Museum were very educational and stimulating and the panels brought alive the history and the development of the Indian Railways and highlighted the role of the ICF in it.
Outside the museums were various creatively made sculptures built from railway scrap giving the place a unique ambience.
This is a great place to visit for schools and along with the museum if school students could be given a chance to visit premises of the factory in small groups and see how the various coaches are made with a guide, the trip would become really worthwhile, memorable and inspiring.

Very Big place spread out with lots of Real Train Engines & Coaches. You can find a the rare steam engine & steam tractor.Train Models are also in display. Audio Visual Shows on Train History also available. 2 Play Areas for children with swings, slides etc. Play area has been filled with sand for lesser injury if children fall. Well maintained and kept clean. A small scale running model of Chennai local train in display. Lots of souvenirs to but little expensive. Tickets are very cheap. Last but not the least there is a toy train in which children & adult can have ride.

If you are looking for a nearby place to go within Chennai with kids , please include this to your list . It is at Perambur . Roads in google map should take without confusion and if you reach nearby the place is known to many locals and wont miss out . For a person who likes Rails and trains this will add lot of interest . Parking is not at all a problem if you are going by car .
The entrance ticket is sold at a mini train compartment and that is perfect welcome for kids . Tickets are very nominally charged .
There is a toy train ride and it is must do inside if you are with kids . They also modelled train passing through a tunnel and it is really fun . There are various types of old trains displayed and most of them you can enter and take experience . Photos also allowed inside . There is audio visual room where some railway promotion videos are shown . Please check the timings of the show so that you can align your other plans inside museum .
In the end , when we were winding off kids wanted to get to the park . There is a small park inside the museum and we spent around 30 mins inside the park . Totally we spent around 3 hours and it was an overall nice experience . However I want to inform that dont expect any AC rooms with cleaned surroundings inside the museum. If you want to just explore the railway , spend time with kids , near by place in chennai add to your list .

Just forgot to add one key thing . There is no food or water available inside and make sure you carry them . Luckily we carried and kids enjoyed eating inside the park .

The rail museum in Chennai is one of the very few in India (Mysore being the other). The actual museum has a lot of historical events in the Indian railways with Photographs. A lot of actual locomotives including a Steam engine and the electric one is displayed. They also have a mini train ride and a children's park. Its a good way to spend 3-4 hours with your kids.

We were looking for offbeat places for a Sunday morning trip and heard about the Regional Rail Museum. After some research on the internet, we visited this place. If you are a train lover, this is a must visit. It does transport you to a time in the past.

The entry is through a room designed like a train compartment. As you move through the grounds, you can see various engines and compartments. Information boards have been provided for most of the exhibits. You can also step into some of the compartments and look inside. The exhibits were not just limited to passenger compartments but also included inspection compartments, breakdown vehicles with cranes and heritage vans.

The toy train ride, which takes you through the grounds of the museum, is one of the major attractions. There was a member of the staff who went around personally informing the visitors about the train ride. It was a nice touch.

There is a gallery inside the museum, where we rushed in for respite from the heat. Inside, there are scale models of old trains, artifacts like the weighing scales, signal lamps, and two "Smiths" clocks manufactured in 1878 which are still ticking. The employees attendance register and various photographs are displayed.

The other part of the gallery is occupied by a huge model railway station with three trains running.

The souvenier shop is nothing much to talk about - it is more of a display shelf with a few train compartment models and there was a book also on sale. Felt that the models displayed did not do justice to the real trains.

There is also a tech gallery which we could not visit for lack of time.

Since most of the exhibits are in the open ground, it is better to visit around 10.00 am or around 4.00 pm. Do factor in that Chennai can get really humid. We went on such a day and the kids were easily tired out. We did miss out on some of the exhibits due to this. Do carry enough water and some snacks. Though there is a small canteen at the entrance, not sure if it is functioning.

This is a great initiative by the Govt. On the whole, the grounds have been laid out well and maintained well. In my opinion, the restoration of the trains could have been better and the maintenance was not up to the mark. These heritage beauties have been left in the open and exposed to the mercy of the weather- the effect of which can be easily seen. They need a lot of tender loving care which will ensure the preservation of a glorious heritage.

Depending on your interest in trains and railways, you could spend anywhere between half hour to more than two hours in this place.

Not a well maintained place to visit. But you can have a look at how the trains were in old initially and you can also see some british deployed locomoties. If you are a machine/Train enthusiast, then it is a must visit.
