Take all the tickets outside. The entry fee, the camera fee, the lion safari fee, the battery vehicle fee etc. The cycle fee is inside if you want to ride a cycle. and the food inside is so so. The kids will complain. But the Lion Safari and Deer Safari can be done first in the morning. Then go around the Zoo. The white tiger is beautiful. So is the Rhino and Hippo. If you can't cycle, take the battery vehicle, but you will miss many enclosures. The day we visited a lot of cleaning was going on, so it was neat.

Not really a place to visit if you are coming from a city which already has a Zoo (big or small). The place was developed in 1985 and it surely feels so, its in need for an upgrade/re-thought for sure.
Athough I am not a fan of the ‘Zoo concept’ (forest is the way to go), but still the design of some of the enclosures is not visitor friendly, for ex the Tiger & Lions are kept beyond a steep inclined road, behind deep trenches followed by highly fenced small cages. The viewer’s standing area is very small, gets crowded by only few visitors, plus the animal has very small area to roam despite of the Zoo itself being huge in area.
Plus remember the weather/Sun in Chennai is hotter than most places add to that the very long area to traverse.
Based on overall experience cannot recommended for people who have a Zoo at their town or who have seen a previous Zoo.

Happy animals with lots of space. Reptiles and birds less so. But they are committed to animal care and protection. The 13 seater electric cart was a convenient for an overview (Rs 1300 for an hour if you are booking the whole cart) and then followed up by E-bikes if you only have a few hours to spare. The bathrooms are old government style basic and not clean and no water. Basic food availability.

A vast zoo with most animals kept in enclosures rather than cages. Well maintained and the animals look cared for. Good facilities for visitors like RO water in many places, food joints and benches under roof where u can eat. As it is quite shady with lots of trees, we can walk. It's quite big and there is option of battery operated vehicle or cycle as well. They have the colourful birds like Macau, paraqueet. Seperate section for reptiles and snakes

A very big place and there is a lot of scope to improve it. Maintenance is very poor. Dirty water for animals and not being cleaned and recycled. Cycles condition is pathetic for the rent they charge, battery cycles are in limited in nymber. Horrible food point with no good options.

As soon as we decided to visit the zoo, I read few reviews in trip advisor and other couple of websites which helped me a lot to plan the very wisely.
Courtesy: Few of the comments below are taken from previous visitor's review (Trip advisor)
After going through the all the reviews we (4 adult + 2 kids below 10) planned and reached by 9:00 AM. Since we reached early we got parking (Rs. 20/- for car) near the ticket counter and parked under a tree (very lucky if you are early) Took tickets including battery operated car for 1Hr Rs.330/- (The lady driver of the battery car told us that it is advised to take for 2 Hrs. pack (330+330) so that you can cover more places else you will always be in a hurry), Line safari, Handy cam and cellphone camera (its must else they will not allow our mobile phones inside).
Entered the zoo and took the battery operated car (we were on the 2nd car) which took around 1 Hrs. to cover about 10 to 15 places and came back to the starting point (Now the time was about 11:00 AM).
Took the lion safari at 11:30 AM and its just 30 min ride (Adults will not mostly enjoy it) and as soon as we were near the entrance of the cage the trailer was like Jurassic park but climax was bit mokka..!. I would definitely say kids will enjoy it by watching the Lion and Lioness very close the vehicle and came back to the entrance again by 12:15 PM.
Had Juice at Hotel Tamilnadu (Restaurant inside the zoo) and started to walk around the birds and monkey territory covered it in 30 mins by the time Kids and ladies were exhausted.
Took rest for 15 mins inside the zoon came out after watching the zoo exhibition and returned back home.
We had a very pleasant visit without any hustles only because of the blow points.
Visit Pros:
1) Zoo is very well maintained (Not animals)
2) Nice to walk inside the zoo (worth burning calories on weekends)
3) Good enjoyment for kids. (I got a special kiss from my daughter)
4) Value for money (Tickets are very cheap)
5) My wife was able to burn 300 calories which she would normally do by walking in treadmill for a weeks’ time.
Visit Cons:
1) If you don’t plan you will feel like you are in a hell
2) The restaurant is higher than average lesser than good (Nothing special about it as our motto was to see the animals and not to eat a full meals)
3) The toilet was worse than a public toilet
4) Local fellow were shouting at birds and monkey which was really irritating
5) Few localities were drunk and teasing girls
6) Visitors should maintain a silence which was absolutely missing (shouting like a katumirandi)
7) Cycle race by few mind less fellows going on in the middle of road (No safety for kids to walk alone)
8) Un tolerable Summer (We would have been in a big trouble if we go in Apr or later)
9) Battery operated Van should be bit more slow (Inform the driver before start)
The best time to visit this zoo is during winter season of before Apr. Try to avoid weekends if not at least public holidays and school holidays because you will see a huge crowd inside the zoo and you will feel like walking on “Ranganathan Street T, nagar)
Things to Carry:
1) Carry good amount of water bottles. Food is not allowed to be carried inside.
2) You can carry eatables inside a have a picnic too (Just biscuits)
3) Coolers (Sun glass must)
4) This park is too large, so wear a good sports shoe, lest you will have an extremely tired feet in the end may want to give up.
5) Wear shorts and t-shirt rather than Jeans
6) Carry backpack bag (avoid shoulder bags and hand bags)
7) Remember to carry a Hat or Cap!!
8) If you are carrying small kids, suggest take kids-trolley with you
This to remember:
1) Plan to reach by 8:30 am, and stand in ticket Queue by 8:45 am ( if you are late you will be in big trouble only weekends, public holidays and school holidays)
2) Outside food/plastics, cold drinks are not allowed inside.
3) Take the ticket for mobile cameras (must)/ cameras pre-hand
4) Ticket window opens at sharp 9:00 am; however, Queue starts at 8:45 am
5) Lion Safari individual tickets including entry tickets
6) Electric Van starts @ 9:30 am and if you are early, you can avoid the delay and rush and the ride is for 1 hour, but, is worth it,
7) The Van will stop at various points so that you can watch the animals closely and take pictures
8) Parking may be a problem. Second parking is at least a kilometer far and you have to fetch an auto to ferry you across
9) No decent food courts are available inside the zoo area. Don’t bother about food just enjoy the time inside zoo
10) The only and worst thing is NO GOOD & HYGIENIC RESTROOMS. It is worse than a public toilet.
11) Aquarium is not that great.
12) You can catch the Lion Safari. It is a completely secured 15 seater mini Bus/Van. The ride is for 30 minutes
13) People were in huge numbers including school children, but, early comer advantage works in your favor.
14) Interestingly, bicycles are available on rent. If you can cycle, and have time, this is a very good option against an Electric Van
15) Restaurant is higher than average below than good
Main places to Visit
1) The main attraction will be the tiger and elephants, Feeding to elephants, white tiger are some of the main attractions
2) Outside there is a forest museum where you can find different leaves and stuffed butterflies and different kinds of soil and rocks
3) Butterfly Park and a bird’s park available
4) To name the few animals you can see Royal Bengal tiger, White tiger, Lions, Cheetah, Hyena, Wolf, Zebra, Giraffe etc.
5) Lion Safari is worth for kids
Ticket Counter
1) The entry fees is Rs 30/- for adult and Rs 10/- for kids (buy tickets even if they are below 5 yrs.) and mobile phone camera fee is Rs 25/-.
2) Buy ticket for full Electric van (Rs. 330/- 4 adult 2 children’s), (one can chose to buy shared van also)
3) Buy tickets for line safari also
4) Check if tickets for cycle can be bought in the main counter itself.
Last but not least, The zoo has good access to visitors on wheel chairs. I saw couple of families brining their loved ones on wheel chair. There are certain places were you cant take them but still they can see most of the thing inside zoo.
Hope I’ve covered everything in my review, have a fun time with animals.
BEST OF LUCK..!!

Is there bicycles with mounted child carrier bike seat available for rent at the Zoo? If yes, what could be the rent per hour and uptill what age can children go in the bike seat.
Written 21 December 2019
The bicycles here are not upto the mark. I don't think they have child carrier bike seat mounted on them. Even if they have, I don't think it's safe for the kid, since we rented bicycles there. They are of poor quality.

You should come here only if you are ready to spend at least 3 or 4 hours by walk. Taking a battery train is only for people who are elderly and those unable to walk. Otherwise, rushing off in an hour or so won't give you the best experience of nature. You would miss exploring the smallest herbs like the touch-me-not plants, or the calming smell of eucalyptus trees near the crocodile zone,or the free range mangooses hiding behind the bushes near the Eagle cage, or even the numerous peacocks near the bear den while returning back around 6pm. The spotted deers which come for feed in the evenings at the snack bar near the pelican aviary are a sight you don't want to miss. You can enjoy watching these animals outside the fences free ranging and you would definitely miss these if you visit the park by a battery train.
