Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you are at the beach then head south of the Luz junction and opposite the commissioners office you will find the light house. It has a paid entrance and you can go up to have a view of the city, harbour and the sea. Its pretty good for the young and young at heart.

Do not miss to take a tour of the light house in Chennai.
Went on 21.03.2015 evening at 5:30 pm.
Visit is to the Light House and the Museum. Lift takes you to the 8th floor and you need to climb to the 9th floor. The place on the 9th floor, visitors area is pretty small and good enough for approx 25-30 people. You get a very good view of Chennai skyline and the Marina beach. Windows are secured by grills for safety. Spent 15-20 minutes there, and took pictures. You come down by the same lift, and then proceed to the Museum. Very interesting and informative for Children including adults. There is a short AV, must see to know about our coast and related aspects. Total time taken for the visit is between 60 to 90 minutes.

Just you can go to have a bird eye view of the city and its very near to Marina Beach. The ninth floor of the tower has a viewing gallery where steel welded mesh panels have been erected for safety. This has been done to avoid suicide attempts which were witnessed in the past.

Recently I visited marina beach, where we visited light house too, it's soo beautiful, and has a good solid structure, they allowed us to climb light at very nominal fee, costed us less than a dollar, it's a must visit place if you are visiting a marina beach, the outer garden is soo beautiful, it has a good seating spots as well as parking spaces.. overall we had a excellent time here...!!!

Marina Beach is huge and you will only understand it if you take the top view of the beach from the light house. I think it is open six days a week, 10 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm. Go there with a good camera.. you will surely cherish the panorama image. Awesome view of the road also which runs parallel to the beach.

This a famous landmark of Chennai known in the past as Madras Lighthouse. It faces the Bay of Bengal. It is at least the fourth known structure here from what i understand. We were not able to go to the top of the lighthouse most unfortunately, but we enjoyed exploring it from the street level.

The lighthouse in Chennai on the Marina beach is often missed by most tourists and many locals. But if you are visiting the marina beach, it’s worth spending a few extra minutes to go up Marina to the light house for spectacular views of Chennai. Adults pay INR 20 and children 10 for taking the lift to the 9th floor (by the way, this is the only lighthouse with a lift open to public in India). Walk up one more floor and you get a 360• view of the sea and the city. Even on hot afternoons the top of the lighthouse is breezy and cool.

The views of the beach and ocean from the top of the light house are great, however there is not much room for tourists up in the light house, so it was very crowded when we went up. Some of these Indian tourist sites also have annoying rules about not taking photographs - this is one of those sites, but everyone up in the light house ignored this rule. It is relatively inexpensive to take the elevator up, so by all means take 20 minutes, check out the lighthouse, then walk the beach.

The place is accessible by bus, auto, MRTS, call-taxi, etc. Just in front of the All-India-Radio building. The facility is open now much to the relief of viewers. The entrance tickets are to be purchased at the gate. Timings for visit start from 10am until 1pm, 3pm until 6pm. MONDAY IS USUALLY A HOLIDAY or a NO-VISIT DAY. There could be special occasions like government holidays, festivals, when they announce it is working too. Visitors to check. Visitors could use the elevator or if physically robust could use the staircase too. Once on top there is a breathtaking view of the beach coastline, the downside being the unkept, untidy papers, polythene covers strewn on the beach. Also the workers there hoot you down so that the crowd don't spent much time on the top, i am not sure if one could spend more than a minute atop. There is a museum at the back side of the light house in the bottom floor where one could have some info about the lighthouse. Camera lovers need to shell out some money to buy tickets. Foreigners need to buy tickets for Rs.50/- per person, while natives ticket cost Rs.20- per person. The lighthouse is a visiting place in the itinerary while visiting Santhome church, marina beach, etc. An okay place to visit.

My dear friend. For security reasons, people are not allowed to be at the top most Point in the Light house for more than ten or fifteen minutes. At the bottom of the Light house, a small park with benches for sitting / chatting is available. Private partying say up to 5 or 6 persons in a group is permitted, after getting permission. But why confine yourself in a small area ? You have the Great Gandhi Beach area just 100 meters from the Light house, where you can have fun, frolick, Ice cream etc and celebrate, up to a reasonable time, say 10.00 PM.Come and enjoy the beautiful place, with or without kids, as per your wish. I shall say, with kids, because they will simply love to play in the sand, take a horse ride, have a stroll near the sea shore, stand safely in the beach shore to enjoy waves with parents/grand parents and enjoy their cup of Ice creams.

Few websites indicate that the light house is open till 11.00 PM on sundays. is this correct?
.
Written 28 February 2016
As far as I know it is not open till that time. Having said that I would suggest you visit on a weekday so that you can spend more time on top.
