Very crowded and noisy. Quickly decided to try the other rock, GOMBU ROCK, found a few metres across the street. Gombu is perhaps more challenging as it is more vertical. It is a quick climb and I'd recommend Dinesh, the instructor who is good.

The rock is named after the legendary 'Sherpa' Tenzing Norgay, who made India-Nepal proud by being the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, alongside Edmund Hillary, way back in 1953. The 'Tenzing Rock' and the 'Gombu Rock', which is dead opposite the Tenzing Rock, are used by the Himalayan Mountaneering Institute (HMI) for rock climbing training.

Tourist err in visiting the smaller side of the rock, as this side is flocked by small shops & eateries. This part of the rock is for amateur climbers and tourists. A tourist can pay a mere amount of Rs.50 per person, with all necessary safeties attached, to fulfill your desires of rock climbing. Even the kids can have a go, no holds barred.

Do not miss to see the other side of the rock which is used by HMI for training purposes. It can be seen when you face rock standing on the road, it's on the left hand side. This side of the rock is extremely steep and almost vertical & might send a chill down your spine. It is said that Tenzing had showcased a climb without any harness to Pandit Nehru. It will take you not more than 30-40 minutes to gulp this attraction in your memory.

Do visit this place as a tribute to the legend and as it is on your way to other locations such as the local tea gardens, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center, etc. It takes not more than 20 minutes from Darjeeling to reach here.

Tenzing Rock is in Lebong cart road, Darjeeling which can be covered in 7 points of Darjeeling tour plan. It is used for rock climbing at ₹100 and thrilling for unproffessional climbers. It is a natural rock beside the road which is named on the name of famous sherpa Tenzing Norgay who first climbed the Everest in 1953

This place is only for those who like rock climbing. If you have it in you, please stop here and try climbing. Some locals have put trekking ropes and you can climb up and down with a fee of INR 50 Rs. And have a steaming cup of tea after getting back to ground!

Another tourist destination in Darjeeling Tenzing rock is must visit place for adventure lovers. Just 20 mins away from Darjeeling town Tenzing rock is very popular among tourist. A natural huge rock is present here, where you can enjoy rock climbing experience with the help of expert trainers. Trainers here are very helpful and co-operative. After reaching top take few clicks and then enjoy natural Darjeeling tea. wow

The Tenzing Rock is inside the zoo and part of Mountaineering Institute. It is good spot for capturing the photograph for memory.

This place has some historical significance because this is where Tenzing Norgay used to teach and train (sometimes), but as of today it's a dirty and badly maintained place surrounded by lots of hawkers selling food and what not. You can try "rock climbing" here, but there are better places to do that in Darjeeling.
