Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Trams are well known in Kolkata. While this museum has some displays in relation to old tickets etc, it really could have a lot more information and better displays in it. The whole museum is a single tram and I would have like to have seen more trams.

Kolkata is the only city in India with a working, albeit declining, tram service.

Smaranika is a small café-museum set up few years ago at the Esplanade tram terminal. It consists of a restored tram parked in its own enclosure. The front car has a few tiny tables where one can sip tea or coffee (and perhaps munch on biscuits or chips – there is a very limited menu). The rear car – which can be entered only through the front car – has a display of old photographs, a few old uniforms, old tickets and tokens, etc. The exhibits seem rather neglected and do not seem to attract many visitors except for diehard fans.

The ticket costs Rs. 10/- and permits you to stay there for 45 minutes – perhaps they want to discourage visitors from lounging there for too long! Incidentally, the ticket itself is designed to look like a tram ticket (see photo) and it serves as a souvenir of your visit.

Unfortunately they do not permit photography inside the museum space. However, I clicked a couple of photos outside the fencing, which I am posting here.

We didnt want to miss tram museum in kolkata..so had shuffled our itinerary so that we can visit during opening hrs in 2nd half. Some locals were suprised when we asked directions for trammuseum. We took cab and still couldnt trace, google map stopped at bus stand area and going around we had to ask traffic police for the place. Finally my opinion, tram museum is small place and not worth the time

Hidden gem of Esplanade, we landed there actually looking for the Tourist Tram which we were told by locals operates from there. Unfortunately we had to look from out as the opening time was an hour away and we were hard pressed.

Looking at the beautiful images shared by rest we regret we missed on going inside which we will whenever we are in Kolkata next.

Photography is prohibited but like the rest we have our set of pics too.

Must visit if you want to experience the history of Trams the life line of Kolkata.

Kolkata has a long association with tramways. It is the oldest operating electric tramways in Asia. It is evodent that such a city will preserve its heritage in a museum. Smaranika is a humble approac to do so. Inaugurated in 2014, Smaranika, the tram museum in Kolkata is the brainchild of CTC to preserve the fading history and heritage of tram in Kolkata. The small museum and café is located deep inside Esplanade CTC Depot, very close to the shopping district but away from the chaos of moving traffic. Interestingly the museum has no separate building, but has been thoughtfully housed in an actual retired rolling stock. The particular tram was built in 1938 and belonged to the Bombay Fleet of trams. It has been refurbished at the Nonapukur Workshop in Kolkata, retaining the wooden vintage look of the car. Of the two bogies of the car, the first one is a small café while the second bogie houses the museum and the exhibits.

Though the museum is small, it is worth visiting. There is a small restaurant also there. Entry fee is 10 INR. It remains closed on Thursday. Working Hours - 1 pm to pm

Kolkata was the first city of India where tram service was introduced. Even now it is running a very limited service. But this Museum will bring all memories of yester year snacks. Worth visiting.
