A Return Trip with a Surprise
Oct 2018 • Couples
We had previously visited the Indian Mound at Oakville but the Education Center had not been open. When my Sister-in-law asked about the Indians in Alabama we took her and my Brother to the Education Center. We found a great display and informative information about the Choctaw, Creeks and Cherokee that once lived here along with the Mound builders. We were given free rain of the display area and spent a couple of hours learning about these native tribes. They have a huge display of arrow heads, spear points, tools etc. An excellent exhibit. There was no charge for the exhibit but they do take donations. (No Cards)

Lots Of Interesting History In Need Of Some TLC
Mar 2018 • Solo
I Love visiting Oakville Indian Mounds, because the area is gorgeous, and I love learning about Native American culture and other history. Walking around the park is fun, and the mounds themselves are impressive. Overall, the manmade features of the park mostly need some TLC. I still recommend as a place to visit, especially since you can do them and the Jesse Owens Museum in one day.

Arrowheads to Burial Grounds
Mar 2018 • Family
The Trail of Tears brought many Native American Indians through North Alabama. Some of whom settled in this area. This museum is interesting for all age groups. With two active Burial Mounds, the museum has preserved a portion of history. And the over 10,000 artifacts on display provide a glimpse into the lives of those who were laid to rest in mounds.

Lots of History in a small place
May 2018 • Solo
Lots of displays in the museum itself many donated by local collectors. Good overview of the history of the area and the Cherokee inhabitants. Mound is not as impressive as some others but it is a good example of how the mound building was a long process and they were used by cultures for different reason. Very helpful staff, good informative plaques throughout the part.

The Indian mounds are interesting but the museum looks tired. The guide just talked but had little interest in our thoughts and questions.

Wonderful find

My girlfriend and I had never been to an Indian mound. This was off the path but well worth it. The museum covered the history of the tribes in the area very well. We were impressed with the building and history included. The burial mound we were a little sad about, the graves on top looked like they had been disturbed or wrecked. The grounds around are beautiful. If you love Native American history then this is a very nice place.

Educational day trip

We were in the area visiting the Jesse Owens Museum. The Oakville mounds were interesting, and we thoroughly enjoyed the museum. The volunteer was very friendly and informative. The museum has more artifacts than I've ever seen before! The facility's roads were a little confusing to navigate. They have several events throughout the year- check before you go.

Interesting!

We were staying in Birmingham Al for business and decided to have a trip out to see this centre and also the Jesse Owens Museum which is close by. We visited on a Sunday soon after opening at 12.00 and we were the only ones there! We found it very interesting and met the guy who works there and he showed us around the museum. We drove around the park but it was too hot get out and walk. We found it very interesting.
