I enjoyed this stop. There is free parking and cheap admission to see the grounds, historic village, and mansion. There were a few docents in period garb in the historic village talking about the provenance of the buildings that were moved and reassembled to the site including: a school, some dog trot houses, and a barn. They do demonstrations at various times during the week for a myriad of activities. The Mansion was magnificent with an awe inspiring view of Huntsville from the top of the mountain. You can only tour the first floor, but it is a wonderful self guided tour. There is a docent there to answer questions and provide additional information.

The whole experience was worth the $12 I paid to get in. The people working in the gift shop/welcome center were VERY friendly. The lady in the mansion was very loquacious and didn't mind answering all of my questions. Everyone we encountered was friendly, knowledgeable and friendly. It was a very laid back experience. I LOVE places like this and HATE that I have lived 60 miles (or less) for 25+ years and didn't know it existed. Everyone should GO

My daughter and I visited this placed and loved it. There happened to be a clock exhibition in the mansion which was very interesting. The views were amazing.would recommend a visit so close to the city.

I recommend that families who live here go visit once, especially during the fun summer kid programs or winter holiday events. They do a great job with homeschool classes, kids' summer camps, and weekend educational programming (to learn about life in the "old days"). They also have wonderful seasonal programs and concerts. However, the house and grounds alone don't take long to tour and aren't noteworthy enough for adults to visit a second time. This is not a recommended activity for my out of town guests.
