We began our exploration of this lovely and historic district at the Old China Hand Reading Room. We lingered for over an hour at this delightful library and cafe, taking in the soulful background music and relaxing with a snack and cappuccino. We enjoyed strolling along the tree lined streetscapes, viewing impressive mansions from a former period and shops with... More

If you are in the mood for a nice cappuccino or great pastry, this is the place to go. A bit of nostalgic feeling for European expats, a great contrast with the Asian architecture and the hypermodern skyscrapers. Love this city !

luckily there are still many old buildings which give the French concession its unique atmosphere. Unfortunatle more and more sky scrapers are being built. The French concession is a world cultural heritage and should be preserved as it is.

Full of character. Part of our Jenny's tour which I highly recommend. Loved this place. Small narrow streets teaming with people and loads of eating places, bars and small arty / craft shops. A must see when visiting Shanghai. Not cheap for drinks but worth every RMB.

Take in the peacefulness of the residential streets. Had a quick lunch at the Green and Safe Cafe. Worthwhile.

Nice but not very French, any stroll in Avignon or Arles is vastly superior. This said, yes, it is old fashioned and tree-lined, a plus in Shanghai

This is quite a huge area and I only able to walk by some of it such as Wukang road, Heng Shan Road, Dong Ping Road and Tao Jiang Road. Slowly discover this area and it is full of surprise because many nice scenery and building here. Lots of cafe and old building full of western style. Love Wukang building... More

Great neighbourhood to spend a few hours walking around, stopping by boutique shops and cafes. Nightlife is also quite good here with all kinds of restaurants and bars.

Tons of shops and restaurants and such a cool experience. Come hungry, thirsty, and ready to shop! I would go again.

Staying in Xintiandi

Neighbourhood Profile
Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.
