A canceled flight to Shanghai left us trying to rearrange our itinerary. We almost had to cancel our visit to the circuit, but I'm so glad we didn't. My husband is a huge F1 fan, and I have become a pretty big fan over the years too. We hired a driver through Miki Tours, who I highly recommend using if you need someone. We did this because we had a bit of a tight schedule - we checked out of our hotel in Shanghai that morning, went to the track and did the tour, then went straight to the train station for our train to Beijing, so it was convenient to have a driver so we could keep our luggage in the car. As others have said, the tour location is hard to find. I found a map of the circuit and circled the Costa Coffee shop to show to our driver (he didn't speak English), but it was still confusing once we arrived. There are so many gates and each gate is heavily guarded. The guards didn't seem to know what we were talking about. We arrived much earlier than planned - there wasn't any traffic! I had read somewhere that tours were available starting at 10:00AM, but when we got there around 9:15 the little tour office was already up and running, and our tour started at 9:30. We had a few minutes to wait so we browsed the little shop in the lobby area - quite a random assortment of items. We had the sweetest tour guide, and her English was actually quite good! The tour was around $7.50 USD per person and worth every penny and more. We started by viewing a 1:600 model of the circuit which gave a good overview and helped us get our bearings. We then took an elevator up to the main grandstand. The sheer size is amazing. This circuit holds double the number of spectators as in Montreal, and Montreal always felt huge to us. There were some fact boards along the way in English and Chinese, which was helpful. We moved on to the press room - again, huge - and got to stand right above the starting grid. We stood on the podium, which was awesome. Then we walked behind the pit lane and saw the villas that the drivers have access to during race weekend. We had no idea that these existed and they were really luxurious. We then headed back to where we started and ended our tour. The tour lasted about 45 minutes, but felt like longer with all we fit in. Our guide was happy to answer every question we had and take our picture repeatedly! Before we left, my husband was able to send our drone up and get some great photos and videos. Overall, it was a great visit, and something you have to do if you're an F1 fan and find yourself in Shanghai.

Going to the Shanghai GP April 2013
Getting tickets was no problem. I waited until I was in Shanghai and ordered them through the hotel on the Wednesday before the first free practice on the Friday. Cost 50p to be couriered to the hotel that same day. Tickets were still being sold up to and including race day and there were obvious gaps in all stands, so not sold out.
Getting to the track was really easy. Subway Line 11 has a stop at the Shanghai Circuit and this is 2 minutes walk to the main Grandstand. No real crush on Friday\Sat or Sunday but I was at the track by 11:00 on race day.
Leaving the track was also easy. I was in stand H and there was another subway stop about a 20 minute walk away (Baiyin Rd) so I used that. No crowds at all and I was downtown in less than 1hr.
Subway fare is 7RMB (70p ) each way. I bought a three day subway pass (45Rmb) to avoid queues, though there were none.
Entrance to the track on Friday was open at 09:00 and you could access all areas except fro the premium Grandstand part.
Saturday was slightly different with people checking tickets to the Grandstand entrances. That said I still managed to get to the main Grandstand and Grandstand B1 as the people weren't too hot on checking tickets. Though this was early in the day at about 09:00 again. Sunday was a definite no, though
Exiting after Saturdays qualifiers was a farce. We all had to line up at the exit whilst ONE official checked tickets on the way OUT!
Supposedly this was to check for fraudulent tickets, however just outside the exit were scum trying to buy my ticket for Sunday.
I did see a few scum buying tickets but not that many TBHO.
Similarly on race day there were scum selling tickets, but again not that many.
Stands
Grandstand higher up gives an almost total view of the track, but is not near the action on the straight. This was £250 for the three days Stand B1 is good as it has the exit to the pit lane, the first three corners (overtaking was rife there) and the start\finish line in the distance.
Stand H section 9 is the 14th corner where the cars have decelerated from 250mph to about 60mph so plenty of overtaking, tremendous noise and some incidents here. Cost £118 for the three days.
Once in the stand most people seemed to wander about and stand at railings so do not be too concerned if your seat is naff, just walk to somewhere else.
No commentary in this stand though and the TV screens didn't quite make up for this.
Toilets
Seemed to be plenty around and all were clean with a mixture of western and "Squat"
Official Merchandise was at the usual stupid prices (£40 for a T shirt) but there were hawkers in the stand selling caps, flags for a few Rmb. Only seems to have Red Bull, Ferrari and maybe Williams stuff though.
Food tents in the "village" were not too bad price for the usual burger and drinks. We took Subway sarnies from downtown.
Overall a good venue with easy access and decent standing areas. Not too crowded and reasonable ticket prices.
With the new rules on 72hrs Visa free visits this may be a possible long weekend trip.

Almost every year in April, I come to the Shanghai International Circuit, home of The Chinese Grand Prix for the Shanghai race. I have no memory when was the first time for me but definitely it was after 2007. The 2018 race ended little over 24 hrs ago and it was one of the most exciting race, Shanghai has ever seen. Red Bull shocked Ferrari, Mercedes and everybody and won The Chinese Grand Prix for the second time (2009,2018) since 2004, almost a ten years gap. SIC is one of my most favorite place in Shanghai. It's located in Jiading, a Shanghai suburb (30 minutes subway ride by Metro Line 11). It has a capacity of more than 200,000 people and it was designed by famous German Engineer, Cercuit Designer and Racing Driver Hermann Tilke. I look forward to more visits to the Shanghai International Circuit in the coming months and years with my family.

Came here to watch the Formula1 in both 2016 and 2018.
The Circuit has its own Metro station on Line 11 so access to/from the circuit is easy, and the crowds are very well-marshalled on race day.
It can take a while to get through security at the entry gates. You can enter much quicker if you don't have a bag to go through the x-ray machine.
Canned drinks are not permitted and will be confiscated. Those bringing bottles must take a sip from each bottle, so bring a 2 litre bottle instead of numerous small bottles, or you will have a very angry crowd behind you
On Friday you have the chance to sit in the main Grandstand regardless of what ticket you have; But you must sit in your 'own' seat on Saturday and Sunday.
The plastic seats are ok with a reasonable amount of legroom compared with other tracks.. Make sure you wrap up well as it often gets bitterly cold and/or wet, with winds hitting you full-on, especially if you are in the K-Grandstand or hillstands. Don't turn come here with only shorts and a t-shirt. You'll regret it.
Food and beverage offerings at the circuit are dire, and overpriced; But that seems to be the norm for an F1 event.
The toilet facilities are many, on all levels of the grandstands, and kept fairly clean compared with some tracks I have been to....My only gripe is: do we really have to look at other people's poo on soiled toilet paper in open rubbish bins with no lids? I'm not sure if this is a 'cultural' thing, but please flush it people!

However, there are no timings on the video screens and not enough video screens , and no English commentary, which detracts from the overall experience. There is also no music concert after the race, which is a downer.
Also , I'm not sure what was going on at Quali Day this year : Gates are supposed to open at 9am, but they didn't open the gates at K-Grandstand until 10 minutes before Practice 3 and kept everyone standing in line in the freezing cold. I hope this gaff is not repeated next year.

The Shanghai Circuit is an excellent venue for F1... Beautiful facilities and well organized... Only downfall is that it is quite a distance outside the city... The good thing is that you can take the Metro/Subway to get there, Shanghai Circuit Metro Station (7 RMB = $1.20)... The other option is to take a taxi for about 200-250 RMB ($32-$40 USD) and your taxi might have a difficult time finding it... a few other smaller events happen here during the year but not nearly enough for taxi drivers to be totally familiar... Getting back into Shanghai the Metro is a must as not many taxis are in this area... So take the Metro and enjoy the F1 spectacle..!

We live in Kunshan so went to visit the F1 circuit to do the tour. The metro line 11 stops right at the circuit. The tour is good for only 50 yuan, you get to see the grandstand, media centre, even get to stand on the podium, but a shame that you do not get to see the pits or get taken around the circuit. We were the only 2 people around as there was no racing on. You purchase your tickets from inside the coffee shop.
Worth doing if you are close by. There is also a go-cart track which costs 150 yuan for 8 minutes, wind tunnel flying.

Visited here in the off season but what a treat....private tour for only 50RMB! Our guide had little English but went out of her way via Wikipedia and translate to give us all the facts about the track, media centre, team meeting rooms, grandstand and more! I'm a big F1 fan so imagine my surprise when we headed for the PODIUM! Also, there were a few Porsche practicing to give us a race day feel. Will definitely come back for a race. Metro line 11 also stops right beside the track.

I visited the circuit when there was no race in progress. I called ahead and found that they offer tours of the place. The place was completely deserted when I reached, and had to ask around to determine where to go.
I entered the grandstand and went to the Costa Coffee shop. At the counter, I paid the RMB50 and waited for a tour guide to take me around the track. The best part is that there were two cars practicing. The guide took me around the track, starting with the grandstand, then the media center, and then the podium. I couldn't goto the pits, but the experience of seeing the two cars practicing was very thrilling. I'd love to revisit this place when the race is taking place.

Shanghai Circuit has which all circuits around the world must have... Easy access, although
its about 45 minutes tube ride from downtown. The low point is just the entrance due to chinese safety during the big events like Formula 1, could take a time to get in, x-ray, one tip to avoid it is go without any bags then you can go through faster.

Awesome race track.
Large seats in gandstand with spaces between each. There's no problem sitting next to a 150kg guy on these seats. Shealtered from the rain. Great architecture. The bottom row is no good because everyone stands up and blocks your view, and nobody stops them. Smokers can smoke freely in the stand, which is no good if ya a non smoker.
The line for beer is way too long. This was by far the biggest disapointment. 20min prior to race end I jumped up and run down and bought 10 coldies. They should have a dedicated line just doe beer. The after event and stalls are awesome. Be sure to catch the train, it us by far the quickest way to and from...

Which train station is more convenient to catch a metro to the race circuit? From Hongqiao train station or the main Shanghai train station?
I'll be taking a train from Nanjing on Sunday morning and there are two destinations to choose from to arrive in Shanghai. Appreciate any advise.

I have only taken the metro to the track from the main Shanghai station & I was following local friends then..so I can't advise on the alternative station. Most of the time I arrive in Pudong and catch a cab to the hotel.

Hi. I will need to arrange a private car to pick me up after the race. I'll be in stand K - anyone got any idea where the drop-off/pick-up point is? I've got a map, but that doesn't seem to show it. Any pointers would be helpful. Thanks.

Will they allow a suitcase into the venue on race-day? (I have to travel straight from the airport.) (I've heard they X-ray bags, so maybe?) Or is there any luggage storage facility? Thanks.

I've always traveled to Shanghai circuit as either a crew member or as a series manager and have never encountered any baggage restrictions into the pit/paddock area, as long as you have the required passes.
I am unaware of any baggage restrictions into the grandstand area or of any luggage storage facilities.
Indeed because of the excellent transport to the track by tube (the station is a few hundred yards from the grandstand entrance) many foreigners do come directly to the track from the airport.
I hope that helps and am sorry if it doesn't.
Perhaps others familiar with the grandstand area can comment further...

1. I see people walking on the track and taking pictures, track walk is allowed on Thrusday or after the race know. Sunday?
2. The grandstand seats these are numbered.. As Mr. X has seat number 55a (like in a movie hall) or just random.

You need a pit lane pass to walk the pit lane. You only get access to the track as you leave the circuit. No one walls the track. If you have grandstand tickets they will be number and the seats are numbered as well. On Friday, your grandstand tickets are invalid, it’s 1st come 1st serve, Saturday and Sunday should be fine

hola que tal supuestamente llego a shangai el 15 de abril en un crucero tengo supuestamente alas 9am para salir del barco pero te pregunto si venderan entradas en la puerta y si sabes como llegar del puerto de cruceros al circuito y cualquier tips desde ya te agradesco solo puedo ir a la carrera
