The area
Address
Neighbourhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

I would like to share this experience we had at Renmin Park (near People's Park) in Shanghai. There were 3 Chinese "tourists" at who asked us if we can take a picture of them. After that, they started a conversation to make us believe they were really tourists. They said they were students from Beijing studying foreign languages, that is why they speak good English. They asked us what country we came from and what places we were planning to visit afterwards. Then they told us we can come with them because they were also going to The Bund (our next destination). The good thing was, I was familiar of this scam because I read it somewhere. We told them sorry but we were planning to drop by our hotel first before going to The Bund. They insisted, and even invited us to drink tea at the Annual Tea Festival. Again, this tea-drinking session was another scam. We said no and we told them we really had to go.
When we walked further, the same situation happened again. There was another group of Chinese "tourists" who approached us and asked if we can take a photo of them.

This is a really nice, large park in the middle of the city that is a good place to relax, with a beautiful lotus pond or check out the famous Shanghai marriage market on the weekend.
However, this review will be mainly about the scammers that operate there to help people avoid falling into their trap! Because since this area is very popular with tourists, it is targeted by the less nice people of China who want to take advantage of lost foreigners.
I have been to Renmin Park twice, and both times I have been accosted by would-be scammers.
As a previous reviewer said, they tend to come up to you by asking you to take a photo of them because they are visiting here from another city, and then they seem to slip into a friendly conversation. This is the first step you should beware of - because Chinese people visiting other Chinese cities rarely have such good English, and they don't ask western people to take photos of them. Usually, it is the opposite - genuine Chinese tourists want to take photos with or of western people.
Secondly, watch out if they are not too bothered about the quality of the photo you take. Both times I was asked to take photos, there was nothing special in the background, and some of the group members didn't even bother to smile. On one occasion, the girl handed me her phone with a photo of the group already on it! This was probably taken by a previous unsuspecting person, and I hope they realised what this was and got away.
Thirdly, be aware that they may be unusually friendly, and have a wide vocabulary if they start asking you questions. Most Chinese people don't know English that well, so if somebody speaks to you in near perfect English, this should set alarm bells ringing. This is especially so because most Chinese who speak excellent English are educated or well-off, and these young people looked very poor. So look at their clothes and their faces, and if this doesn't match with their amazing quality of English, you should tread carefully.
Fourthly, tea ceremonies do not exist in China. There is no such thing. If they invite you to one, it means taking you to some dodgy backstreet, where their associates will charge you an arm and a leg to buy some "special" teas, and then probably try to steal your wallet on your way out.
I was lucky because I had already heard about these tea ceremony scammers thanks to my DK guidebook, but because I am quite naive and like to believe in the best of people, I did engage in a conversation with the first group of scammers that approached me. But because I knew of this, I asked them how much it would cost. When they said 200 RMB, I explained to them that I didn't have that kind of cash on me. You would not have believed how quickly they disappeared as soon as I said I had no money!
So be aware of suspiciously friendly people with good English, particularly around the metro station exits, where they wait around for tourists who look at bit lost and are just getting their bearings.
But don't be put off! This is a nice park and it's worth visiting, and once you are inside, you tend not to be bothered, as most Chinese will either ignore you or just point and say "Weiguoren!" also, be aware that food from the stalls there is very overpriced, maybe 5 to 10 times the price of what you can get in quieter places, so take your own drinks and food if you need them

When we were strolling through the park in the afternoon we heard lovely Chinese music and singing. We made our way towards it to discover a talented player of a stringed instrument accompanied by a couple of women singing in harmony and accompaniment. We sat and listened to the performance that was much appreciated by the crowd which had gathered. It was a lovely introduction to the park.
Created in the early 1950s from part of the former race course after the banning of horse racing, the park is a highly popular destination for locals and visitors. We saw groups doing exercises and more enjoying card games.
Within the park are further notable attractions, in one of which, the Museum of Contemporary Art, we spent a couple of enjoyable hours.

The People's park in Shanghai marks the centre of the mega city. It's not too big but each weekend you can see the Shanghai Marriage Market, i.e. a place where people try to find good matches for their children and grand children. However, there are only few photos of the "candidates", thus, you should have someone speaking at least a little Chinese to understand the information there. Moreover, you have two nice restaurants/ cafes in resp. next to the park: Barbarossa (western-oriantal style) and ROOF 325 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar (western style). Both not cheap but nice. But if you go to the park be aware of the "tea ceremony" fraudster. They invite you for tea ceremonies and will make you pay between 500 and 1000 RMB. Thus if someone at the park invites you, just go away.
Thus all in all, nice, interesting park, but too many people at weekends and the fraudsters are really terrible.

Remin 'People's' Park has a bit of everything: the local park culture of tai-chi, qi-gong and various musicians (saxophonists), the incredible marriage market which usually takes place between 10-12 on Saturdays (thousands of parents and their hanging 'ads' searching for potential mates for their sons or daughters) and unfortunately plenty of scammers looking to sucker you in to buying over-over-over-priced tea or artwork (they are usually in pairs, young and attractive and very friendly.) A nice break from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

I grew up in this park, so... now it's much smaller comparing with 20 years ago, u may just go through it instead of walking on big street from west nanjing road to the people's square, about 20 min. the contemporary art museum inside is ok, gets some nice exhibitions from time to time, and the terrace is perfect for a drink. but if you want the terrace of starbucks or barbarossa's (i doubt whether they open it in day time), its also fine, totally different from when you overview the park from jw marriot just beside. And the most funny view happens on saturday, u may find hundreds of old people gathering there, they are looking for a date for their children!

I also got this experience just yesterday, one Chinese couple asked me for help to take picture of them with background of nothing. I was quickly notice that they are scammers as soon as the girl say 'You look like Chinese'. That is totally just lips service as it is obviously I am not a Chinese.
The guy try to speak in my language to get closer, but I leave them away. This people really annoying and break my expectation of being relaxing in the park.
And it is correct, you should be carreful to aggressive Chinese who speak English very well on the street.

This is a nice and large in the city center that provide visitors a place of serenity and tranquility from the busy and noisy traffic. There are lots of nice flowers and large greenery throughout the park where one can temporarily indulge in our mother's nature and enjoy peacefulness. It's a very nicely decorated park with colourful flowers and plants. There's also eatery, cafe and a flower shop there.
However, during our visit, the weather was super sunny and warm and so there wasn't many visitors and even if there were, most were taking cover under the shade of tress or in the cafes. As the park is located near our hotel, we did pass by it everyday several times and enjoyed our walk there especially in the early morning. It's quiet and air was fresh.

This is a nice park located in people's square. It is within walking distance from JW Marriott hotel.
Other than the fact that it is a beautiful garden tucked in the middle of the city, there is an interesting feature of this park. This is where parents will advertise the availability of their children using umbrellas. The background history and BIO data are written on paper and placed on top of an umbrella. Judging from the number of people who are walking around, they are serious about matchmaking through this means. This place is worth visiting, simply just to see this aspect.
