Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A large, free and very comprehensive exhibition (mostly with English translations) of the origins and development of the region and city. Supported by many artifacts this is, however, overly academic and probably not one for the casual traveler or children. A lot of focus is given to the founding of the communist party, which was the most interesting section, although I also liked the China at War section. Overall it seemed a little staid and stuffy but reasonably interesting

This museum explores the history of the city of Shanghai from around 1850 to 1950, starting with the opening of Shanghai and ending with the revolution in 1949. It is located right by People's Square. Housed in a beautiful old building, the museum is large and doesn't feel crowded, even when there are SO MANY people there. The signage include both chinese and english versions. I arrived at 9:07 am, and there was no line. I spent about 2.5 hours there, and I learned much! There were movies (all in chinese, but still informative) and cool diorama type exhibits. There were also several interactive exhibits, but most were in Chinese. Also, don't forget to go the the second building. I went, and I was the only person in many of the rooms - it was weird. The second building includes some awesome old school taxidermy, which I thoroughly enjoyed!
Last time I was in Shanghai, I went to a Shanghai History museum that was in the basement of the Oriental Pearl building. The Shanghai Museum in Oriental Pearl Museum covered this period and later periods. I am not sure how they are related, but I would recommend both!

Honestly I don’t know how this museum only has 19 reviews. It’s a great museum and the best part is that it’s free. Also gave me something to do during the typhoon. They’re constantly expanding with more artifacts and whatnot. Pretty cool stuff

We walked from our hotel to the Shanghai History Museum. I've always wanted to go because it's built into a European style red brick building with a clock tower.
It's been converted into a really great museum. The major exhibition focused on a Western architect who designed many of the Art Deco buildings built in Shanghai in the 1920's and 30's.
Museums throughout the world try to figure out how to make themselves attractive and relevant to younger audiences. This one did a great job!
There were lots of video exhibitions, done quite huge. One has a view of a steamship entering the harbor in the 1800's. The "floor" has the image of the deck of the same ship, creating the image of a person standing on deck, getting the view.
A long glass panel inside the entrance has a number of video exhibitions built around a historical map of the city. Logically, it's in Mandarin, but tap the "English" button and it switches to English. Another button gives a view more suited to children.
Is everything video? No. They have two huge bronze lions, originally commissioned for the HSBC building. The lions have names! How they got them is explained too.
The main exhibition involves lots of photos and documents. This is often boring. Here, it's not. The exhibition is divided into small sections, with text on the painted panels, letters, documents and large images printed on the walls. They are easy to understand, follow chronological order and are very engaging.
This was a great museum to visit. It's free, it's well designed. MIT has a good gift shop.

The history of Shanghai is displayed in a large collection of articles. The exhibits are arranged in a systematic chronological order. Worth to pay a visit to learn more about the city.

A great free museum in the centre of the city, if you're a history afficionado you can expect to learn a great deal about the long history of the city.
However, the needless lionisation and politicisation of the top half of the fourth floor in a dedicated sop to the Party is a needless and boring distraction from the real history of one of Asia's greatest cities.

I was supposed to go to "regular" museum, but lines were incredibly long, so my guide CELINE decided to try this museum. An unforgettable and not regrettable choice. Full of great information on the growth and development of this cosmopolitan city.
